I positively cannot handle sports-themed cars. I don't like them, and frankly I don't think I'd much like the people that would drive them. It's like a Barbie-themed car, done non-ironically.

Those are the ones where you have to replace the thing in the motor or else it goes CLUNK, right?

thesameguy
March 2nd, 2015, 08:50 AM
Yep, the IMS bearing.

But it's only "maybe." There are plenty of these motors running around that have never gave a problem - they built them until '05 or so? But if it fails, that's probably how it'll fail. There is in in-car repair that addresses and corrects the problem, but I'd anticipate any cheap 996 or Boxster does not have the repair. While the repair is only like $1500 or $2500, it seems cars with it are worth a good $3k-$5k more than cars without.

FWIW, my coworker who's BIL has the 911 was going to sell it to my coworker, but he decided against buying it for fear of repair bills. He's the guy looking for a fun car, and to whom I sent Cuda's Z. He does not like Z32s for whatever reason - I have no idea. :P He currently has an S4 Avant. He may go for a Focus or Fiesta ST as the fun car... I think they're top of the heap right now.

That Gwagen!

I'm following Doug deMuro's series on Jalopnik about importing a Skyline from Japan because we're coming up on (in my opinion) the golden age of cars, the nineties, for the 25 year import exemption. I am seriously thinking of importing an OM606 (3 liter, twin cam, sometimes turboed, DIESEL) powered W461 Gwagen 5door. W460 are the originals, W461 are the first update that fixed some stuff, W463 is the luxo barge we got here in the states.

thesameguy
March 6th, 2015, 10:34 AM
That raises an interesting question... since pre '00 diesels aren't subject to California smog checks, can they be mercilessly imported?

Random

I'm thinking that, more importantly, we should be thinking of diesels to import that would be improved with badass motor swaps that wouldn't be CARB legal otherwise.

I looked into one of those lifts for work & storage but my garage rafters are about 6" too low. :( Someday I may tear thing down and rebuild it, but frankly by the time that level of disposable income is on the table I probably won't need the lift anymore.

It's not the car height, it's the height of the lift itself. The verticals like 90" or 92" or something, and I've got 6" too little.

Wow, are all 10-year-old American minivans with only 100K miles this cheap? And this one is being sold by a dealer, so I'd assume the price is extra high compared to a private seller. Is it because American cars are living on borrowed time after 100K miles? Not that I want a minivan, but if they're this cheap I might look more closely. I really hate strapping a bicycle rack on the back of my sedan, and that will only become more common as the kids get older. I'd rather be able to throw all the family's bikes in the back of a van. Or skis, loads o' stuff from Home Depot, a few hundred pounds of contraband to haul out of state for enormous profits, etc.

Ford Minivans are worth only a little more than GM minivans, but they're basically the bottom of the barrel. Both of their offerings pale in comparison to the almighty T&C/Voyager/Caravan. They were not widely regarded as good. Of course, time heals all wounds and money rubs the lotion on the skin, so at five grand how bad would it have to be for it to be actually upsetting?

The Camry is too gaudy with those huge chrome wheels, IMO. It needs some 15" steel wheels and scuffed-up aftermarket plastic wheel covers like most of the other Camrys of that age driving around so as not to attract attention.

I was hoping to find something to compete with the Starsky & Hutch car above, but sadly this is the best I can do on the Denver CL today:

I owned a VW just like this from '87 - '92 - same year, color, interior, but with a lot more miles than this one. Mine was a good looking older car back then, but I don't think it ever looked this good.

My wife and I moved to Colorado ten years ago. A year or two ago, we found a box CHOCKED FULL O' PHOTOS that had been squirreled away behind our salt-water fishing gear in the basement, which might explain why it went undiscovered for so long. Here's something I found in that box, much to my delight, and scanned and uploaded via my "new" Ubuntu-powered scanning/printing/surfing/Hulu-watching basement workstation.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a284/craigslistuser/1971%20VW_zpsjoiv8foy.jpg

I'd guess I took that picture in around 1989, give or take a year. I had the (silver, not blue) stock steelies and hubcaps and aftermarket beauty rings too, but I had found these somewhat period-correct aluminum aftermarket wheels at a VW-only junkyard and thought they looked pretty awesome at the time. They were, at least in my mind, roughly the equivalent of EMPI wheels on a Bug in the 1960s, but who knows, really. They might have been cheap junk. The rest of the car was bone stock and clean, clean, CLEAN.

For pl8ster: ;)

The personalized plate was for a nickname I had in high school and college. Today it's on the wall in my father's garage, as it's kind of a family thing, and he ordered and paid for that plate for me. One day it will be on the wall in my garage, but I hope that's a very long time from now.

It's a LOT cheaper to get actual Panasports than custom Konigs. The Konigs you have to buy 10+ sets of blanks (40 wheels) and then have a shop drill them. You can buy actual Panasports already in 4x110 for $250ea from Mazdatrix!

SUZUKI SV 650 - $3500 (Waupun) (http://madison.craigslist.org/mcy/4960322169.html)

http://images.craigslist.org/01515_2TyPPBe8jPa_600x450.jpg

There comes a point in every mans life where he feels the need to pass down some history or perhaps a legacy, this time is now. For the low price of $3,500 you too may become a bad ass. This motorcycle is not just a way of transportation, it is a way of life. The side of the gas tank says Suzuki which loosely translates to "Kick Ass Stealth Ninja Motorcycle". It is a 2006 SV 650. I stole this motorcycle from Chuck Noris after I gave him a swift roundhouse kick to the face. I also broke off his arm and signed the title with it to my name from him so it is all legit and legally mine to sell now.

I will not admit to how many of the miles have been used for ninja missions however, I can tell you that all of the 17,803 miles are actual road miles. This motorcycle has 6 speeds in the transmission and all of them are completely capable of causing instant death or harm. I have known the common man to reach speeds of 75mph... I will not comment on the top speed that a skilled ninja rider may accomplish, this you shall find on your own. The front and rear suspension has been upgraded with Racetech front emulators and springs. The rear has been upgraded to a Hyabusa shock for adjustability of compression and rebound for those ninja missions that require you to jump the grand canyon... Also has a Dynojet Power Commander with a custom tune installed for "slap you in yo face" hyperspeed capabilities.

If you message me asking about being "firm" on the price I will tell you right now that I am NOT. $3,500 is only my starting price, you may want to pay me more after you would see it in person. If you think you can get a hold me and ask me to sell if for less you could just as well save me the effort and punch yourself in the balls because that is what I might do and you are most likely a sissy and not worthy of this motorcycle. If you are from Africa and try to scam me do not waste my time because I will swim across the ocean and find you in your dirty hut and judo chop your face with an ultimate punch right to the face.

That car is ridiculous. With so many great things to do with a 2.3t or any other Ford turbo motor I just can't see why you'd turn an SVO into another V8 Mustang. I guess if maybe the thing had good metal but was otherwise a basket case, but it seems they took a nice car and... well... built just another V8 Mustang. That black four eye Novi posted would have been a much better candidate for such work.

Ad text below for when the ad gets flagged.

"I just wanted to make sure people are aware, this is a total scam. I drove all the way out there to look at this thing and the guy wanted a huge deposit before he'd even let me take it for a spin.

After looking around a bit I'd be surprised if this thing could even finish the Kessel run, let alone do it in a decent time. It's totally infested with roaches and womp rats, so when you figure the cost of a 6.2 trillion cubic foot fumigation job, this thing is a total write-off for that reason alone.

I know it's had Sand People in it, but all the tracks are single file so who knows how many have been in there or what parts they've ripped off.

You can't even get this thing licensed in most states until you remove all 384 turbolasers and the ion cannons will have to be retrofitted with low-capacity magazines (thanks Obama), and there's no way this thing is ever going to pass emissions.

The "carbon scoring" is conveniently makes the serial numbers unreadable, so I can't even verify what model year this thing is, but I suspect that it's the year that no one wants because there weren't any handrails on the control deck. The whole "open bridge" thing was a terrible idea. It's like the Pontiac Aztec of star destroyers.

So save yourself a trip. The guy just wants this crap off his farm but doesn't want to pay the Jawas to haul it away.

Believe me, this isn't the star destroyer you're looking for."

That Saab is super awesome! At first I thought it was Ben's out of SF, but Ben had swapped all the guts from a '90s 900 - 16v, ABS, SRS, etc. Same color though - how weird!

Those Voyagers were the good-ish ones, IIRC. Not as bad as the first ten years of 'em, maybe could be considered actually reliable. They are still based on the K-car like the earlier ones, but by '90s they had gotten the bugs worked out of the drivetrain and their manufacturing. I think it's the next-generation ones that were legitimately good - new platform that was purpose-built.

Sorry, I faked you out and moved the mini-van post to George's Garage in the Garage section, which sucked because I cut-and-pasted it, and then somehow lost it, so I had to start over. Your advice about it is gratefully noted.

I wouldn't have looked twice at that Saab except for the extra windows behind the rear doors. Without that, it would look just like the later 900s that were around so long, nearly unchanged to my eye.

Why someone would go to all that trouble and expense cosmetically and not do any of the myriad cheap engine swaps is beyond me. A 400hp V8 with a 6-speed wouldn't cost ten grand, maybe even half that. Insaneo.

I don't think Jags are known for issues with plugs, injectors, or coils. When I had a misfire and asked about the $1800 replacement of ignition coils everyone said they never fail and it was something else. It was - it was a failed o-ring on the PCV pipe and a dirty MAF. I think on an '01 with 120k it's more likely the timing chain is fux0red and it has bigger problems. Looks like an otherwise nice car - too bad about the pesky timing chain issues!

My sense on the GT-R is that it's worth $15k, MAYBE $18k with clear CA registration and smog. That's not a factory color, those aren't real Volk wheels, it needs transmission work, and it's kind of dingy.

For $30k I'd expect near perfection. Factory paint in good shape, for one thing.

I still don't 100% understand what it takes to smog a non-US car in CA, but that's not worth $15k. Hell, $15k would buy you some land way-the-fuck-out in NV or AZ or OR, and hence a legal address where you could register this thing out of CA entirely.

1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe - $3000 (https://madison.craigslist.org/cto/5000921758.html)

http://images.craigslist.org/00D0D_f2B8TUJTlbM_600x450.jpg

1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. It has a 2.3L turbo. The engine has been rebuilt bored out 40 over with a street strip cam in it. I have the cam card posted. I was building a 400 to 500 hp motor. All the machine work has already been done. I have not gotten around to relocating the intercooler or putting a T3/T4 60 trim turbo with 3" exhaust in it yet. I have about $8000 just in the machine work in the motor. Which I know I will never get back out of it, my loss your gain.

The dash has cracks in it but the rest of the interrior is in great shape. The body needs to be repainted. The clear coat has started to come off on the roof, trunk lid, and hood. The paint is origional. The tires are the wrong size, I just put them on the car to be able to move it around when neeeded and drive it down the road a little. I have an extra front passenger quarter panel to replace the one that was damaged by a deer. I also have an extra trunk lid, and a few extra misc. parts.

I have owned the car for 21 years now and have just lost interest.
Bonus points for honesty.

I am selling this car for my mother(clean title in hand), who was 50 years old when she bought it new in 1997. While this car was not just driven to church on Sundays, it has lived a low key life. The car has been well maintained, and the exterior and interior look very good for being an 18 year old car.

No trades, cash ONLY! It's a 5-speed manual transmission, and I won't to teach you how to drive stick.

Hi im looking to sell my 1981 pontiac trans am it has been through the restoral process motor and trans have been rebuilt with 25500 miles on both(really shows when driving) body has 83k runs and drives great vehicle is all original! Have full records that car has never been crashed or motor swapped. I would take this car anywhere. Great project car or motor donor selling too many toys looking for 3500 o.b.o will also trade for truck must be 99 or newer rather chevy but run it past me.

Also motor is 5.0L 305 v8 4 speed th400 turbo trans hurst shifter
GODDAMN DO I WANT THIS CAR! Slicktop TA w/. four-speed?? Sumbitch! :rawk:

EDIT: Also, I think he's packin' a Muncie M20 with a Hurst shifter (just guessing based off of some reading)... good write-up here. (http://www.oldcarmemories.com/content/view/122/113/)

For 1981, the WS6 suspension package could only be had with the 15x8-inch Snowflake or the 15x7.5-inch Turbo Cast wheels. The following items also came standard with the WS6 package: 4-wheel disc brakes, limited slip differential, thicker anti-roll bars, stiffer shocks, and a tighter ratio steering box. The end result was a WS6-equipped 1981 Trans Am easily obtained .81 g on the skidpad which made it the best handling American car for 1981.

The WS6 was so much better than the standard suspension it was worth the $372.00 to $580.00 extra versus the standard suspension and for those who didn't want to pony up the extra money for the WS6 but wanted to have 4-wheel disc brakes with the standard Trans Am suspension, Pontiac offered the J65 option which added only $167.00 to the Trans Am price tag.

Worth noting, Pontiac also offered a WS7 handling package which included all the items the WS6 offered except for 4-wheel disc brakes (the WS7 used rear drum brakes).

Bugatti Kit Car - $5900 (https://madison.craigslist.org/cto/4953288301.html)

I bought this from an older couple that really doesn't remember much about it. Not knowing it was going to take so much of my time and not knowing how to do much of it, I would have to pay someone to do it which I can't afford. My wife has gone to a nursing home since I bought it, and I just don't have the time to get things fixed so the price has been lowered drastically. It was sitting for a long time and even though it runs well enough there are some issues. The body is solid but to but it should have a little TLC to make it in show room condition.

The engine, trans and clutch and running gear is all sound but the interior is outdated. The value of the car at that time will be worth much more but even though it runs and drives great I just can't afford to finish it the way it should be. It has a 4 speed transmission and a 40 HP VW engine. That is the way this car was. There are no doors nor is there a top that goes with it That's the way it comes. a fair weather speedster. You really do have to look at it to judge it properly. There is a new battery. The tie rods need replaced.

I am unclear about what year it is a replica of. Checking as much as I could I think it is a 1927-1937 replica. If you know anything that will help me put a year on it, I would greatly appreciate it.

That Eclipse would be really interesting to me if it was an AWD model. I suspect that clean, relatively unmolested 1st and 2nd gen Eclipses will be decent collector cars someday, since most got destroyed in the first half of the Aughts thanks to the F&F craze.

...well, if it wasn't perforated, that is. :|

That Bugatti thing is a big WTF... It's like somebody started out making a T35 but then added their own non-sensical improvements. Or maybe Bugatti secretly invented the V6 and everyone forgot to document it? And what up with the Cadillac steering wheel?

I am also very interested to know what TurboCoupe guy spent eight grand on. $2k buys you everything you could possibly want from Esslinger to build out a stock head, and $4k buys you a superior, built aluminum head that you just bolt onto a block. My stock-headed build out only cost four grand. Where did the other $4k go? Somewhat related, someone on the XR forum polished up a set of those TC wheels and is running similar rubber band tires and it looks awesome... it was just the big TurboCoupe donuts that bring those wheels down. :)

I dig the two bugs, and the manual Volvo wagon, too. That Super Beetle novi posted is either a '71 or a '72. 1971 was the first year of the Super Beetle with the wider front fenders that sort of "roll under" at the bottom. In '73 the Super Beetle went to a rounded windshield and larger dashboard, instead of the old-style flat windshield where your fingers on the steering wheel were just inches from the glass.[/VW geek mode]

RE: Misrepresenting Scorpio Man -

I can't see how anyone would think they would find a sucker at the $27,000 price level. I've been reading craigslist ads for electric guitar gear for many years and I see that sort of foolishness there, but for far, FAR less money. I can see how some kid might get fooled into buying a cheap guitar or amp for more than it's worth, but who spends anything even close to his asking price on a rare used car without knowing exactly what they're buying?

The only folks I can think who might of are the suddenly rich - young pro athletes, musicians, criminals, etc. But they're buying brand new stuff like Escalades, right?

This looks like it's in great shape for its age:

This is not a 1970 Super Beetle as the seller claims, but this ad doesn't seem as if he's trying to pull a fast one. Maybe it was mis-registered at some point before he bought it. You can tell it's a Super from the front end, but those were available until the '71 model year, at least not in the USA.

This gets extra points for overall appearance, cleanliness, and the 8-Ball shifter knob , but loses them for aftermarket wheels, fenderskirts, and dated 1980s custom interior door panels.

The seats in that Beetle could be '80s vintage Recaros - they sure look the part!

'79 Malibu needs stock hubcaps and whitewall tires. It also needs the chrome tailpipe trim, chrome door-edge trim, and license plate frames removed.

That would be my explanation as well. Tough to choose between a car you'll want to love and an appliance that will perform the same function better.

If you're going to go with a new edge SN95, you might as well just get a Cobra and win the IRS. For me it'd be the only real reason to buy the newer car.

Are those ROAD HUGGER tires wrapped around Pontiac wheels? And those painted bumpers...that was before the Rallye 350's time, dude.

George
May 27th, 2015, 12:24 PM
Those are Pontiac wheels now that I take a closer look. From this and previous comments, I'd say pl8 knows his wheels as well as his pl8s.

When I see painted bumpers and same-color emblems, I'm reminded of how differently those things looked when I first got interested in cars. Back then it usually meant someone got an Earl Scheib paintjob and didn't bother to remove or mask what they didn't want sprayed.

My father and I had a car painted at an Earl Scheib shop in the '80s. I remember we removed the bumpers and spent a lot of time sanding the car and masking the tailights, mirrors, etc. The Scheib boys pretty much wheeled it straight into the paint booth when we arrived. I assume that's what they did for everyone, regardless of how/if the car was prepped for paint.

Was, and is. You can get a pretty good paint job from those places if you do the prep work.

Yeah, ours turned out well. It was a '79 Malibu, similar to the one speedpimp posted above, only without the built V8, mag wheels, and vinyl top. It was a six cylinder automatic, and had been a company car where my father (and I, during high school and when home from college) worked. Someone hit it from behind, and the company put it up for sealed bid auction to the employees. Dad bid $400 and won. He turned up a trunk lid and a taillight assembly somewhere, which we installed, and then drove the faded brown car with the mismatched trunk to Scheib and had it painted a similar-to-original dark brown. It looked just fine afterwards. I drove it for a couple months when I was between Beetles and about to go off to college. I remember buying and installing a Craco or whatever cheap brand of AM/FM/Cassette players they sold at Western Auto, and one of those amplifiers that went BOOM when you turned it on, and then whined as the engine revved. High fidelity!

I put a pair of 6x9s in the rear deck, and then realized it was like a PA system with the trunk open. I hadn't "owned" a car with a trunk in the back before, so this was a new concept to me. I remember having it at a lake party with the trunk lid open and listening to Boston on cassette. I have only good memories of that car, but I didn't drive it long. Dad sold it when I went to college (without a car). I assume he made a few bucks on it, as the car was only seven years old then.

Edited to add: Oh, yes, and I drove it to Myrtle Beach for a week after graduation. I and the car survived, but I do remember coming home with a bumber sticker with a cartoon girl inside a Ghostbusters-style red circle with a slash through it. The caption read "No fat chicks in bikinis".

And BTW - my "dude" reference was directed at the dude with the '69 Cutlass, not the dude with the Accord :D
