We drove it tonight--nice and tight, but didn't really blow us away.

Owner has a couple other leads, so we told her to keep us in the loop as people look at it.

This was the 227-hp 2-liter turbo. EJ20?

Current owner says they got 27mpg out of it, which I find pretty amazing. My guess is they never took it past 2000 rpm.

I can't think in murican gallons. 10km traveled per litre of petrol consumed would be about the very best likely outcome with one of those engines.

Often the non turbo ones will drink more than that, due to sheer gutlessness.

Got roof scoops? This guy does.

1968 AMC AMX PIRANHA - $40,000 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5049781922.html)

"I have A rare limited production AMX "Von Piranha". A handful (22) of these GO PAK cars were dealer modified in Denver,Co in 1968-69. They added the roof air scoops (non functional) and side scoops that function to cool the rear brakes. The highly modified 390 engine included the "Group 19" R4B intake, headers, and a Holley 950 3 barrel carb with an automatic Shift Command. The hood was modified as well. These cars were built for the drag strip and road course. This rust free garage find car starts right up, runs, and handles excellent."

Posting this just for two things I don't remember seeing before:

1969 Chevy Van 90 v8 4 speed column shift w/ posi-tract (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5049169559.html)

1. Pop-out windows that open sideways instead of from the bottom. I don't recall seeing these on the rear windows of a van.

http://images.craigslist.org/01515_eCjwL33E5rM_600x450.jpg

2. A four-speed column shifter. But I admit I have column shifter envy because I've never driven one.

They're trying to establish that it's been sensibly driven by a non-thrill seeking, non-scofflaw, totally mature adult. And therefore it has never been given full throttle and is full of unburned carbon build up.

Interesting... I interpreted that as "no parking tickets," which is worth considering in a bay area car. Showing up to the DMV to register a new car and having them hassle you about unpaid parking tickets sucks. I *still* don't know whether parking tickets follow the car or the owner, because I've been told *both* by DMV employees. If you happen to get one of them who thinks a car can't be sold until the tickets are paid, you end up with a problem.

Well... score one for the states where the plate stays with the person, not the car! Can't sell a car with unpaid parking tickets?? The person parked the car... the car isn't the culprit.

thesameguy
June 8th, 2015, 08:42 PM
I think the point is rather that California prevents the sale by encumbering the car so that they get paid. The intent is that you rack up tickets and you're stuck with the car until you pay them, rather than some random new owner ends up stuck with them.

I'm still not even sure that's how it works, and neither are the DMV personnel apparently. It could also work that the release of liability detaches the tickets from the car and they stay with the owner. Like I said, I've gotten two very specific, distinct stories from those weirdos.

Interesting about that 9-2x plate. Possibly someone who lived in a one-plate state and put a random CA plate on the front as a type of 'booster' plate, and then moved to CA? I had an expired Maine plate on the front of my car(s) when I lived in NC. Or it could be something more nefarious, but that's highly unlikely on CL

But seriously, a 10-year-old WRX clone for $10k? I haven't priced WRXen lately, but I have trouble believing a 10-year-old WRX with 100k could pull $12k.

When I bought my first three or four Saabs, these E21 323is were all over the place in Los Angeles. If you wanted one, you could get one. But I haven't seen one for sale in probably ten years... which may be why a $3000 1995 car is an $11000 2015 car.

I found another one that at first blush appeared to be a 3.5l swapped E12, but after reading the ad the bulk of the pictures are of it stock, when dude bought it. It's now in pieces and a "project." A 5-speed 3.5l E12 would be a little old slice of heaven for me.

Sadly, that's not a thing in California... you gotta turn in the plates to get the junk slip.

I hadn't noticed the blue plates though... sad they gotta disappear!

Or maybe not. I'm not going to fork over $650 for $100 worth of junkyard parts. It'd be nice to have them in one place in working condition, but it ain't worth a $550 premium for that convenience.

I really like that white one... definitely on the to-do list.

For personal reasons I think I want to try and either find a '94/'95 car (R134a) or an '00+ car. The former to avoid any potential OBDII catalytic converter hassles, the latter to avoid smog test hassles. Those '96-'00 cars are going to turn into undesirables - all the smog maintenance headaches of OBDII and none of the advantages.

But, that's *me* - if that '99 Camry is as nice as it looks, I think we'd move on it. I wonder what the real-world economy differences between it and a GM 3400 are?

I can understand wanting a presentable car in a business office parking lot, where the goal is to be (or at least look) successful. But everyone knows teachers are underpaid. I think if I were a teacher, I'd proudly drive the crummiest old wreck I could find (like my current ride) just to reinforce the stereotype and perhaps get some mercy when it's time to plead for a raise.

Things were looking dark but this morning someone posted a '98 V70 GLT

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/misc/98_v70_anne1.jpg

Second owner. great shape, 231k but $1000. Had too look. Ended up buying it. Solid service history, full IPD suspension, IPD cat back exhaust, and overall legitimately nice. At $1,000 even if something expensive breaks like the transmission or head gasket it's a defensible purchase and if everything lasts then it was a coup.

The cheap car market positively sucks right now. Everything else we looked at was not just old but actively broken in some way... notably a 2003 "daily driver" Jetta which had LCAs no longer attached mechanically to the frame. A terrifying drive - every change in inertia resulting in a neck-snapping clank from front suspension shifting around.

Glad this is over. I was getting stressed out. Having 48 hours in which to buy a cheap commuter is the worst.

She was in a very bad accident a year ago - she was riding her bike home when a jackass was doing something with his phone moved into the bike lane to make a turn WAY before the actual turn, and obliterated her from behind. Never slowed, didn't even touch the brakes until she was on his windshield at which point he nailed them and sent her hurtling onto the asphalt. Broke her neck and her spine, but she's on her feet again. It's amazing she is alive. Her job teaching restarts today, so she needed a car. The asshole that creamed her didn't have insurance or anything of value, so basically she won a mountain of medical bills and no income to offset them. So angry. She is my best friend's little sister - I've known her for 25 years. She might as well be my sister. She was hoping for a Saab (her first car was one of mine ;) ) but a Volvo isn't so far off. :)

Well it ain't free, son. If you're not paying out of pocket (and I agree that we shouldn't have to), it has to be paid for somehow.

Universal liability insurance paid for via the gas tax would have solved this particular issue.

IIRC they just let you put the LT4 in normal C4s the last year, since people knew the C5 was coming.

They did similar with 60th anniversary edition C6s, letting you finally get the Z06 engine in a convertible.

Whoa, they were still putting 8-track decks in Caddys in '81?? My parents bought a new '81 Olds 98 Regency Brougham - also a diesel, coincidentally - and it had a cassette deck, which I remember was pretty cool at the time. I guess Caddy was not in the 'early adopter' business back then.

EDIT: almost forgot about that Wagoneer.... *faint*

I got the guy to send a copy of the failed smog report. NOx are about 200ppm high at both speeds, everything else looks good although HC may actually be a little low... possibly contributing to the NOx issue. Or, it could just be tired old cats not doing their job. Looks like new ones are about a $300 affair... although I never know if my exhaust shop is going to hose me on labor or not. It's totally unpredictable. Assuming it is as nice as it looks (given it's a 20 year old Ford with 200k on it...) I'd be a-ok with spending three hundred bucks to get it on the road. Having it around would dramatically simplify my November and December.. although I can't quite figure out whether to use the camper, sell the camper, or store the camper. I really don't like the latter scenario *at all*.

The trunk of the Fleetwood is used for one thing and one thing only. And it isn't camper tops by a long shot.

Seller says it needs new tires and shocks, which I guess yeah, of course it does. I don't know about the tires - it looks like those are aftermarket 16" wheels on there, but KYBs are a whopping $16ea. Be still my beating heart.

The smog thing is a hassle, and tires aren't cheap no matter what. I really want to offer the guy $1000 or $1200, but man, there just isn't a lot room down from $1500 for something that runs. $1000 F150 is a total beater, regardless of year. I may have to suck it up and take a risk the cats solve it, and are in fact $300. I'm up to about $2500 at that point which results in more competition - but newer trucks and/or ones with V8s and 4WD, things I don't need. I am just not sure if a manual inline six is worth "more" or not.

I called my favorite muffler place - been going there for nearly 20 years (I AM OLD AS FUCK!) - and the dude who answered the phone said "$400 to $500 installed, depending on exactly what we need to do."

......"But, I have to tell you, it's probably not the cat. Those old Fords almost never need them. Been doing this for 25 years, and it's rare I see a cat on one of them that's actually bad. What are the numbers?"

The guy then proceeds to call his buddy the auto mechanic, but doesn't know how to work his phone so I can hear the whole conversation. "Hey Chris, got this guy with a six cylinder F150 asking about a cat. I don't think it's the cat. Oxygen is low, HCs are low, it's just NOx."

Chris agrees, it's not the cat.

"Hey, Ford guy, you still there? Yeah, my buddy agrees. It's not the cat. I'll sell you one, but I think it's probably the EGR valve or maybe the MAF needs cleaning. It could be the cat, I'm not saying it's not, but I really don't think it is. If you want to take your printout over to Autotech Chris will look at it and maybe give you some better advice, but on the surface I wouldn't buy a cat."

*That* is some customer service. Except he wouldn't actually quote a price. Heh.

So, maybe an O2 sensor, MAF cleaning, general tuneup, vacuum hoses? I dunno.

Tires are 215/75-15, so fortunately cheaper than 16s by a wide margin, but unfortunately I'm highly unlikely to find a cheap, functional set of takeoffs on CL. Boo.

Now I just need to figure out how to get out there and back. It would be awesome to have it for this weekend... although I guess expired registration is a damper on that plan. Bah. Details.

I was feeling really good about that F150, but communication with the seller dropped off precipitously following "Can I come out and look at it Tuesday or Wednesday?" 24 hours later, no response. Who knows?

From reading, it seems like everything I have always intuited about Ford trucks is true. They kinda suck. There is no great answer - the six is great, but the Mazda transmission it's bolted to isn't. The earlier cars have a speed-density fuel injection system that can be rough to deal with. The later MAF-based ones have more power and run better, but then (in California) it's OBDII nonsense. Going automatic solves some problems, but that destroys any advantage in power or economy the six offers. The E4OD is a known trouble-spot until like '94 when it was upgraded. Compared to, specifically, 1994 Chevy C/K with a 5.7l TBI and a 4L60E, the Ford is a disaster. But I still want the Ford.

Which is, you know, beige. I don't care so much about the salvage title. It's a diesel with an aftermarket ATS turbo kit. Kinda meh about the whole thing, but $1900 and it has a headache rack... it'd do.

Also, there is this:

Which has some things I am really into, including 1978 Ford F250. Old makes less sense than Ford diesel and Nevada City makes less sense than Suisun. But, seriously, '78 F250!

Hey, just realized F150 != F-150 as far as Craigslist is concerned

Ah, I wish we could find those up here without massive holes rusted through them. My father's 300 I6 9th gen F-150 never gave him any issues up to 120,000 miles. Then a girl in an Eclipse ran a red light and broadsided him, totaling both vehicles.

Guy with the green one is pretty responsive to email - trying to work out an inspection tomorrow. $2500 is more than I want to spend on this, but I am hoping I can maybe talk him down to $2k or slightly more by waving money in his face. :)

I re-read the white one and saw the bit about clunking over bumps, and that gives me pause. These trucks have a TSB on subframe rivets coming loose which results in that scenario. Not sure that's something I want to deal with. I was going to email and get more info, but the only reply-to is a phone number. I hate that shit. If I wanted to call people I'd read the newspaper.
