really tired of the omg i saw someone buy a homeless person a meal videos and 'viral postings' on facebook.
half the people sharing them would never do the same thing for a person. most wouldnt even give their leftovers.

its a sad commentary on society that someone doing good or right is such a huge news thing. it should be the norm.

Not me! Last time I did any RPGs was in 2000, and it was a retro 2nd Ed fest that lasted about six months. Before that, maybe '91 or '92? Fuuuuuuuuu. So OLD.

Although, coincidentally, while sitting in traffic earlier this week I somehow started thinking about my stash of pre-1st edition books and substantial collection of Dragon Magazines. Oh, yeah, I was thinking about clutter because the gf's mom is a borderline hoarder, and every time we visit and come back home I remark that our house looks totally uninhabited. Entire rooms devoid of furnishings and shit. I was thinking about the clutter I have - that is, things that are never used, just stored - and my old D&D stuff came to mind. Do I chuck that Deities & Demigods or keep it forever? Dunno.

So I got my new electric bill (last bill was $184, much higher than in the summer months where I run air conditioning), which included a letter saying that a technician came out and my meter was functioning properly. The bill is for $0.00, and shows zero usage for October along with a $44.14 credit. This left me thinking, WTF?

Today my meter got switched out for a 'smart' wireless meter, and the installation person said that my meter was misread, which resulted in the high bill.

I thought of this last weekend while playing Forza 4 with my son, but just now remembered to post it.

All this time (many years, right?), I thought Freude am Fahren was just the screen name of one our friends here on the forum.

Then I saw it painted on an overpass on one of the European race tracks. At first, I was like, WHAT THE...?! and later of course I googled it.

Am I the only one who didn't know? I'd guess almost certainly.

Toyota says low fuel prices will cut into Prius sales Why are people so short-sighted? They can't really think that these prices will stay around... right? And SUV sales are up also. All because of a temporary drop in fuel prices?

I don't think too many people are buying full size pickups and SUVs instead of Prius models because of low fuel prices.

Instead, they're probably buying RAV4s and CR-Vs, which are rated up to 24/31 and 26/33mpg.

Let's be realistic, a Prius is of questionable value over a cheaper Corolla for most buyers anyway.

can you fit 2 adults and 3 kids aged from 8 to 13 into a Prius comfortably? (that said.. the last crv i was in was super uncomfortable due to a child seat behind the passenger seat. knees wedged into the dash i'm not sure i needed a seatbelt type of discomfort.)

I'm also not out of money its just family stuff screwing with my time away from stress. i should have gone somewhere or even just gotten a hotel room here.

You should definitely go somewhere for your vacation. Even if it's a hotel/water-park. It feels great getting away from the same routine and be in a different setting.

I can't think of a scenario where I'd help someone buy their kids a Christmas present or something like that, but help with a plane ticket out of a bad relationship or help with living expenses after being hit by a car? Being "outsourced" and knowing one will soon be leaving a good job has its ups and downs.

One of the more unpleasant tasks is having to go to bullshit meetings while grinning CorpSpeak middle-management morons blather on about how important they are, and how well things are going in getting rid of most of the attendees of the meeting.

One of the sadder aspects is watching people who know they are being laid off actively participate in these total waste-of-time sessions, as if they've forgotten we won't be here when the plans of actions being discussed take effect. These time-wasters who won't stop asking stupid questions are almost as bad as the dolt who called the meeting.

One of the best things is being able to "innocently" guess at the cause of the problem being discussed, "accidentally" mentioning that current problems have been primarily caused by the fool running the meeting, and all without fear of reprisals.

A strange week here in Toronto. A few days ago, a beautiful and well dressed woman went up to another woman in a drug store and stabbed her square in the heart! For no apparent reason.

This chick (http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/rohinie-bisesar-arrested-and-charged-with-attempted-murder)

She was captured by police yesterday, and it's become evident that she was suffering from some sort of mental illness. Before this there was widespread speculation (on social media, of course) that she was an Islamic Jihadist, because she's brown and everything. This even made international news for the same reason, because well, terrorism is sexy news these days. I suspect news agencies around the world will quickly abandon this story now that it's not even remotely terror-related.

My initial reaction when the story broke was that this was probably revenge as part of some love triangle, but they haven't been able to make any connection between the two women at all. The above article was written after she was captured, and it's more apparent that the woman was just simply fucked up.

I feel sad for her. Not because she's Indian and I am too...and no not because she's strikingly beautiful and I'd love to 'stab' her in my own way. It's just really sad to see how a person's life can crash and burn the way hers has. She's an MBA and clearly a very bright lady, but seemingly one who couldn't cut it in the corporate world. She studied hard for half her life, with the best intentions in mind I'm sure, but what was the point of it all if she was just going to end up behind bars? She'll probably plead insanity and not be held criminally responsible for her actions.

Her email to the National Post newspaper was above and beyond bizarre. To the extreme. The kind of stuff they talk about on Coast to Coast AM.‎

They haven't released any info on the victim except that she's much younger, and is in 'grave' condition. I hope she survives.

EDIT - Victim just died. Fuck!

Google fiber is fun

I hate you.

Semi-related, my wireless/4G internet at the Ranch is not nearly as awful as I thought it would be. During peak hours (7pm to 11pm or so) browsing is acceptable, downloads are useless. But at all other hours, and with torrents overnight, it's sufficient enough. I find myself caring less and less about silly things like Internet performance these days. As long as I still get my odd torrent, or my odd podcast, or my odd Steam game download overnight. Not stressing over it.

Srsly? That's something BofA would do for sure - not behavior I'd expect from a CU!

I opened an internet bank account (Discover, FWIW) to address those rare situations. Mobile (like, cell phone) deposit means not having to leave the house, and I keep only a tiny amount of money in there so if the card went missing, my actual bank account wouldn't be at risk. Most of the internet banks will also refund ATM transaction fees charged by other banks, so using my Discover card at a BofA ATM costs nothing. Being able to get fee-free cash anywhere (even those gas station and bar ATMs) is peace of mind for me.

Sad, little man

All depends on how you choose to view it. You can be appreciative of what you are able to get, accept that it is just a special thing that you don't get to have/do as much as you want, and tell yourself that makes it even better when you can.

Or you can tell yourself you've fully accepted that it will never be the way you want it, so you'd rather not have it at all, and take satisfaction in the fact that you are taking control of your life and making the decision for yourself, rather than relying on other circumstances to dictate your life.

Either path can work out just as well, it's all in how you choose to view them and yourself.

The UK Lottery has been going for nearly 20 years. They used to use the slogan 'It could be you!' in advertising. Over the years the jackpots have been steadily declining year on year. SO much so they brought in a midweek draw a good few years ago and ticket prices doubled to £2. It hasn't helped. I think after twenty years most people have realised that when they said 'it could be you!' they missed the tiny small print that said 'but it probably won't be'.

Freude am Fahren
January 8th, 2016, 10:19 PM
They raised the Powerball from $1 to $2 a few years ago, which upped the starting jackpot from like 10-20million I think. Then last year they added more numbers to choose from (it's a 5+1 thing). So now it's out of 60something and the starting jackpot is $40M. It's played in maybe 30 states twice a week and hasn't been won since October I think. When it gets in the multiple hundreds it climbs exponentially as more people play.

I'm all for it, at least in Florida. A lot of the money goes towards education, and it literally paid for my entire college education (minus housing because I didn't do dorms, and a semester of tuition because I did 9).

The largest solo win in the U.S. was a Mega Millions at $590,500,000. The largest jackpot was also a Mega Millions at $656,000,000 but there were 3 winning tickets. This latest Powerball beats that record and we'll see how many winning tickets there are. With this many ticket sales, it's likely that there will be multiple winners.

This means fewer winners and bigger jackpots. I guess they didn't like Mega Millions having bigger jackpots. Bigger jackpots means more lotto fever which means more ticket sales.

$900 million now. Could reach $1 Billion before the 11PM drawing.

Our lotteries also use anuitized jackpots, so you only get $900 million if you take it monthly (I think? Maybe yearly) for 30 years (at these levels, that might be worth it). If you take the lump sum, it's like 2/3 of that (I think the larger the jackpot, the lower percentage of it you actually get). And of course you pay taxes on both situations.

According to this site: http://www.techinsider.io/how-much-lottery-powerball-winner-takes-home-2016-1

If you're the sole winner of the $900M, you take home $558 million in a lump sum, then you pay like 25% federal taxes on that (edit: right away, and about another 15% at the end of the year), and then depending on your state, you may lose even more.

Given that, 400+ million dollars is still a nice chunk of change. (actually like $350M)

But as to the yearly payouts, at $900 million, I think it's worth it, provided the entire world doesn't go down the shitter. That's still $30 million/year before taxes. In the end you wind up with like $650M (actually like $550M) or so after taxes in 30 years, an additional $200 million or so.**

**They claim the jackpot is a guaranteed amount of money, but apparently you still only get paid you first payment based on the lump sum, and then they invest the rest to make it come out to the actual jackpot in the end. So yeah, take the lump sum and invest yourself.

Drachen596

For powerball, You match the 5 base numbers you get $1 Million, regardless of the jackpot. You match 4 base + the powerball you get $50,000. And then this number and smaller winnings will be multiplied by the randomly selected multiplier (2,3,4,5,10x) if you spend and extra dollar per ticket. The biggest non-jackpot you can win, however is $2M if you match the 5 base numbers, spend $3 on the ticket for "powerplay". The base 5 with powerplay is only ever $2M, regardless of the multiplier.

I really wish you hadn't said that.

I was talking with my gf the other day about "what if we won" (which would be a miracle, because we didn't play) and my exact words were: "I wouldn't change a thing. I am happy with my life and my job, and the only thing money might do is eliminate a few minor stress points. But with several hundred million on tap I could generate a little slack for virtually everyone. I don't know why I wouldn't do that."

I can't understand *at all* why someone with millions, tens of millions, or hundreds of millions just wouldn't help. When your circumstances are such that you couldn't possibly find yourself with financial problems everything else is excess. Everything else could do better for someone else.

Maybe all the lottery players should form a corporation and agree that whoever wins splits it between all the players. Turn in your non-winning ticket to the person who won and get a few million, no questions asked.

Phil_SS
January 11th, 2016, 12:05 PM
They count toward the current as yet to be ultimately determined jackpot.

I know that sounds kinda vague cause it is. They don't actually know what the final jackpot is until all the tickets are sold for the drawing on Wednesday. And because of all the publicity this has received it is going to be huge. I wouldn't doubt that by the end the winner will get one billion+ as the cash payout. Which is nuts unto itself because they could be giving away 1/2 billion dollars.

I was talking to my mom and she was asking what I would do with the money and she was commenting on how people that win these big lotteries end up having crappy lives. Because people bother them etc. And my answer was, that's because they have no goals on what they want to do if they had that kind of money. I have all kinds of hopes and dreams and things I want to do that I would have a great time doing if I won.

Yeah, I know - but it is the concept which I think counts. One person could have a mountain of money they would have to actually try to use, or lots and lots of people could have some money they could use immediately. :)

Also, there a thing going around on facebook saying If we divide 1.3B by the population of 300M, everyone can have 4.3 million. This is why America sucks.Whomever did that was not using a U.S. billion. If you do the math, that's $4.33 in U.S. billions.

Think about the kind of work it would take to fill out that many ticket slips with all 292,201,338 combinations and then running them through machines. It's just not feasible.

There probably aren't than many people who can easily put their hands on $584,402,676 in cash. I doubt that many of them are prone to lotto fever.

Even if you could do it, if two other tickets hit, you're fucked.

Apparently some group in Australia tried something like that once but only had enough time to buy 5 of the 7 million combination of $1 tickets in a Virginia lottery. Thankfully for them, they did manage to win (imagine not winning after buying $5mil in tickets?).

The logistics just don't work when the odds are this big though. The time (and paper!) needed to do it are unrealistic.

A rant aimed at nobody here but to the corporate world in general:

If I hear one more person say or write "I'm having issues..." when they mean "I'm having a big fucking PROBLEM over here!", I think I'm going to tear the buttons off my shirt in a rage and go out in a blast of office glory in a Chris Farley-style rant about people who are too damn girly or scared or wimpy or whatever the hell it is that makes people say issue when they mean PROBLEM.

Stop inventing new meanings for words. Stop turning nouns into verbs and vice-versa. Above all, stop using CORPSPEAK, dammit!

Oh, wait. I should have said:

That KT has been completed.

KT = knowledge transfer in CorpSpeak, for the lucky few who don't know that. Also notice I used the passive voice for the verb. In CorpSpeak, one never makes bold proclamations, such as "I finished the work" or "I trained my replacement."

No.

It must be "The work has been completed" and "the replacement has been trained", as if some divine hand made the event in question occur. Never take responsibility and say "I did that" in CorpSpeak. Instead, say "that has been done." :smh:

George
January 13th, 2016, 02:05 PM
Yeah, I know griping about CorpSpeak is so 1998, but we're having daily international conference calls and they're like contests to see who can say the most outrageously incorrect things in an attempt to sound smart, or powerful, or whatever makes managers feel important. All the worker bees listen at these calls but only the highest level managers speak, and they seem like they're all trying to outdo one another in whitewashing a completely messed up situation.

There have been so many impossibly stupid things said, but the one that got me going just before I received the email saying someone couldn't or wouldn't do the work requested because they were having "issues" logging into the system, was someone using the noun "action" as a verb, such as, "We need someone to action this item."

I just can't understand how bright, experienced, and well-educated people MY AGE AND OLDER, in some cases, have started talking like this. Do they think it makes them seem cool to the younger workers? That's certainly not the case in my department, where the youngest person is 39.

Hey, it's a free country. Say what you like. As for me, I'll just grumble about it at my favorite forum, since I can't log into the system either.

I finally gave up on buying what was then current generation stuff. I did end up buying some old stuff cheap like a Nikkormat FT3 which was nice for macro stuff because it had mirror lockup, unlike all other Nikon SLR's of the 90's except for the expensive top of the line models.

I dunno. I live and breathe through CL and wouldn't go for that deal without a lot of assurances. When I sold a Saab to a lady from Chicago I made her send me a personal check with a copy of her drivers license and told her I would hold the funds for ten days.

Related, I have $800 un my PayPal account right now from someone who was supposedly buying an iPad from CL. The person seemed fishy so I used some tools I have to find the owner of the address I was shipping to, then her email address... which wasn't the address I had been communicating with. Turns out her shit was hacked. I notified PayPal and she notified her bank. I still have the money two weeks later. Seems like nobody is in a hurry to get Deanna her dough back.

So, yeah, I don't trust PayPal or long distance transactions.
