I want to know how they come up with the names for the housing/apartment complexes. They always seem to have a random mix of 2 words like "Walnut Run" or "Antelope Orchard" (ok, I just made those up).

Is it like two dart boards with names, or is it like a slot machine where they just roll two wheels and come up with a name?

Anyway, I want that job.

It's interesting, BMI vs Visual vs Personal Reality, no? I was 285-290 lbs, lost 100 lbs, now I hover between 195 and 200. Over the winter I crept back up to 203 and I'm looking forward to running again, to hopefully burn some of that back off.

But according to the BMI I'm still "overweight", close to obese, at 195 lbs and 5'11. Yet I can go jog 7km around my concession and feel pretty good, and I've improved my health in a zillion other ways. I have the stretchy post-weight loss skin here and there but I've done a decent job of firming it up, I've packed on a little muscle. Everyone I talk to says "BMI is bullshit, just ignore it"... But then wtf do we have it for?

It's odd how obsessed I am with the magical "190 lb" number, and it remains my goal to MAINTAIN it, even though I only hit it once or twice last year. I THINK I feel healthier at that weight, but really, do I feel any different at 200? :twitch:

balki

"BMI is bullshit, just ignore it"... But then wtf do we have it for?
Because it's easy to measure and because skinny (low fat AND low muscle) people live typically longest.
Considering how general it is it ain't that bad. If you're athletic you probably already know better than to rely on an overly simplified measure like that (a 3% body fat bodybuilder can be considered extremely obese on the BMI index)
So yeah, it's bullshit, but for the mindless masses it has some use (waist-to-height ratio may be a slightly better general measurement)

Do like the Marines. Measure your height, measure your waist, measure your neck. Subtract the neck from the waist. Compare to an arbitrary(?) number on a chart that matches your height.

It's scientific because it has numbers. It's not silly at all.

Certainly better, but thats even more measurements than waist-to-height ratio which itself requires more work than the BMI (you know how lazy people are).

That's what got my cousin into the Coast Guard without losing weight first. He was definitely packing more around the waist then he should've, but he's always had an enormous neck which balanced out that measurement.

Something I can't quite get: a size 40 suit comes with 34" waist pants (33" or even 32" for the slim fit ones), yet dress shirts' measurements around the waist are typically 40-44"
I understand you need some slack for bending+twisting, but even slim, very slim, ultra slim, .... American shirts get nowhere close to the waist of the pants
Is it similar in Europe and Asia?

I have various variations of "slim, very slim, ultra slim" (and modern fit) shirts, most of them are noticeably bigger around the waist compared to a suit jacket. Only ones that are close are two sizes too small. I know the fancy European brands have a much narrower cut, but I ain't paying $35-85/shirt during a clearance sale.
The regular fit ones are like flying squirrel suits (seems like the baggy size of the 90's never left the budget dress shirt's cut)

She goes away for the same weekend (and doesn't mention it to me) with some of her friends and when I ask her if she enjoyed it she says that it would have been more enjoyable with better company. Yes it is the magic number for 200 lbs lost. In a sane reality I should be happy with 200(which should be my healthy weight) and leave it at that. The blood pressure is excellent, I had a shitload of blood work done and a CT scan of the stomach done and everything came back negative. So it meant that just between work and watching what I was eating I lost fifty last year, which came as a huge surprise.

I had a great weekend, my father and I drove from Florida to Miami-Ohio University for my cousin's wedding. My family is from a small town near Philadelphia...

My cousin is a very cool guy, and being outgoing that he is, he decided to ask a fellow alum to attend his wedding, Brandon Brooks, a guard for the Philadelphia Eagles, and he said he would attend, even though they never met before.

This was covered in the Washington Post, on several Philadelphia and Eagles fan websites, it was even covered on the local TV news in Ohio:

Had a new rubber roof installed in the fall of '06. A few weeks ago I noticed so discoloration on the ceiling but the ceiling tiles weren't soft or tacky. So I painted over the discolored areas. This past weekend I checked the areas again, no discoloration but the tiles were soft. I measured from the window to the area where it is soft, measured the same distance on the outside of the house, pulled out the step ladder and climbed up high enough so that I could touch the roof and the plywood under the rubber was soft as well. Had someone come out today that does roofing on mobile homes, he climbed up on the roof and noticed that things that should've had flashing put around them ten years ago hadn't, they had only been caulked. The cause of the soft roof was due to the roofer not removing the chimney assembly for the fire place, laying down a single sheet of rubber, cutting a hole for the chimney and reinstalling it and then doing the flashing. He simply cut the rubber in two pieces and laid it around the chimney and then used a piece of metal called a termination bar to mate the two pieces of rubber. Only thing is in the ensuing ten years the rubber has shrunk a bit leading to the current situation. So here's to hoping for some dry weather so that they can complete the work in the next week or so.
I used a five foot aluminum step ladder and climbed up on the third rung and felt nervous as shit doing that. If there is one thing that I do not like, it is heights.
Anyways, onwards and upwards, or something like that.

FWIW, we've been using a lot of drone orthophotography at Oroville. They've also done a bunch of LIDAR surveying (also via drone) and produced 3D site models at a very high resolution. It's super cool stuff.

Sadly, our undergrads are not of a standardized size. Lidar seems like it would be the bomb for landscape feature/form surveys - I'm not sure what exactly the Geography department has equipment-wise (when I was finishing up my geog minor, there was a single post-doc screwing with drones, and I'm not even sure if he's still around), but something that would do lidar would be perfect.

I don't own one of these devices and don't see a need for it...at least not one that's always linked to the internet. I've heard of similar issues with Alexa and the Xbox Kinect.

I just played the ad and it didn't work, then read that Google intervened and disabled the ad from being recognized. My home will light up, listen then just do nothing. I repeated the same words, and it worked. That is actually pretty neat that google appears to have made the home recognize that specific voice pattern. Overall, I think it's a pretty clever idea from BK, but I don't like that they edited Wikipedia to do it (which is against the rules).

But your point is spot on about too much automation and tech being bad.

I don't think it will be long until you can tell these things to respond only to your voice after doing a few calibration phrases.

Full Face motorcycle helmets are technically illegal in Louisana (http://www.nola.com/traffic/index.ssf/2017/04/motorcycle_helmets_exempt_mask.html)

They fall under a law that says you can't wear a mask of any sort except for during Mardi Gras, Halloween or for religious reasons. I believe its an old law that got put into place to limit the KKKs activities in the state.

Oh and by the way, Louisiana is a helmet law state. Meaning that a helmet is mandatory.

If you live outside the neighborhood and your child is invited to come join the fun with school friends at their 7:30 AM Easter Egg hunt...

It is NOT okay for you and your family to show up at your child's friend's parents' house (people you haven't met yet), ring the doorbell at 6:50 AM, and expect everyone to be awake, dressed, have coffee and breakfast ready, and be glad to see you.

I'm just imagining all of the stuff that happened that went un-noticed (in general) before everyone had smartphone cameras.

Yeah, Delta was being assholes. First of all, the ticket agent let them get on the plane using the 18y/o's ticket for the infant. And saying they couldn't have a 2 year old in a car seat was a lie. Once the family said they'd give up the seat anyway, and put the baby on their lap, as they had planned when they originally bought the tickets, they should have said fine and moved on.

The rules say the ticket isn't transferable, yeah, but they asked, and and Delta said sure. At that point, Delta shouldn't do anything about it.

And then how they handled it, about lying and threatening taking the kids away from them is just completely bullshit. I fly Delta mostly, and haven't had any problems, but this is pretty pathetic.

By the way, since Delta hasn't exactly given their side of the story, all we can go by is the video and the family's account.

I got to work this morning and was greeted with "You called off. You're not coming in." Uh, no. I didn't call off. Turns out one of the guys that loads the trucks at night thought it would be funny to call in as "me" and say I was calling off of work for the day. When the night crew went to break the new guy was in the office doing whatever he does when the phone rang, he answered it and apparently it was me calling off of work for the second time this week. Actually it was one of the other guys calling from the parking lot. The guy that answered the phone told the night boss who called in the driver who was on call to cover for me. Considering that it was 3 am I'm pretty sure that he was more than annoyed when he walked in and saw me. When I got back from my route I talked to my boss and the owner. Neither was too happy with the situation and the owner said he was "taking steps" to ensure it doesn't happen again.

I called off Tuesday because Monday night I had two violent, system clearing "Thunder Dumps" within an hour of each other. After the second one it felt like something was stuck. As the night went on it felt as if I was getting a prostate exam. By the time I went to bed I couldn't sleep because of the fucking pain. I got up and headed off to work. When I hit one too many bumps, I called off work, turned around and headed directly for the ER. By that point it felt as if I had been having a prostate exam for twelve hours. As I was laying on the exam table the doctor came in and proceeded to do a real prostate exam. When you introduce fingers to an area where it feels like there are already fingers good things are not going to happen. I repeatedly uttered God's name and was damn near on the verge of tears. I ended up getting Morphine, Toradol(for the swelling) and Pepcid and something else to counter the upset stomach effects of the Morphine. Almost instantly things started feeling a lot better. They did blood work and a CAT scan. Everything came back negative. The official diagnosis was "stomach flu" which caused the root beer fountain out of my ass which led to the balloon knot being almost swollen shut. After five hours I was released with a suppository(those are no fun to insert), an antibiotic and Tramadol for any pain. When I got home I took one of the Tramadol and as the day went one I decided that there is no need to take them because it would be way too easy to like them.

so MTV's movie awards introduces a "gender neutral" category for best actor...

I'm quite progressive but I think this may be a bit too far and especially since your competition basically doubles for the award at that point.

Thoughts?

It's all a self congratulatory circle jerk anyway, so I'm ragingly indifferent to their giant egos :)

Wait, so do they have one acting category (per TV/drama/comedy/etc), or three? I'm okay with changing actor and actress to just actor (or acting person ). Do I think it's necessary? No, but whatever.

If they made a third category, that's just dumb. How would they even fill out the category every year.

I think it's the way to go, it covers any gender and doesn't cause problems with mis identification in rare cases. Also it's inclusive, and inclusivity matters when it comes to young people developing and growing up.

After being engaged since November and after just celebrating a 1 year anniversary of being together, my fiancee and I have split up.....yet somehow I'm relieved...I never expected to feel this way, so maybe there was more undercurrent of emotions I wasn't aware of. She was upset because I thought celebrating a 13th "monthiversary" was a bit silly and it just went downhill from there.

This is the girl I knew from our Philippines office and we went traveling to other parts of the Philippines and Japan together, but there were so many obstacles in the way of us actually getting married and living together (visa stuff, money, etc.) and she wanted to go back to college there.

I just feel relieved in general, and also, seeing as I've never been great with women...maybe this was validation that at least for some time, I was worthy, lol.

I have a major business idea that I'm working on involving 3D Printing which is going to take up a lot of my time anyway. Now I can focus on that more.

That's kind of how I felt after breaking up with my girlfriend of 2 years when I was going to college. Once we broke up it was like this huge weight off my shoulders. It was one of those things that we probably both saw happening for a couple weeks leading up to it. It's not easy still, but the freedom to concentrate on yourself again is pretty nice.

Googling the name finds something posted on Crimestoppers last year where he's wanted for violation of probation on an original charge of driving as a habitual traffic offender.

I feel sorry for those who may suffer as a result of his death either because he was a parent or source of income for their support but not for him.

I worked 63 hrs last week and was really looking forward to having both Sat and Sun off this week. I wasn't home Friday for more than twenty minutes when my phone rang telling me that one of our drivers fell twice at the same customer and hurt himself, so he called off and the driver who was "on call" had "things to do"(get drunk) and couldn't come in, so they called me, and me being me said yes. It was an easy day with eight stops over 250 miles. So this week I ended up with 65 hrs. Who knows, maybe I'll hit 70 next week.

I was going to be off the Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend, but they're cancelling one day off for everyone that weekend, including my Sunday night. Sunday night for Monday on my midnight shift would be a paid holiday anyway, so with that night getting cancelled, I'm getting 8.5 hours at time and a half, and some penalty for them cancelling my holiday off means that I get 20 hours of compensatory time as well.

But I have one of those evil government sector unions.

In other job news my completely hands off till you screw up and get them called out manager is rumored to be leaving for a spot in California next month. I hope its true with the caveat that the replacement be one of the people who knows how to actually do all the jobs the spot manages. A few months ago at my job, they hired someone to do one of our simpler tasks where we connect to a system and fix file corruption. A lot of employees start doing that job before moving on to the other helpdesk stuff.

Well this guy is terrible. He's very old, like in his late 70's, can barely hear anything, forgets things constantly and the other employees have to constantly monitor him to make sure he doesn't screw something up. Several of us have told management that this isn't the job for him and since he's a temp, should be easy to "allow him to find work elsewhere".

I sat across from him for a few months and it was really bad. I told one of the supervisors who just yelled at me for bringing it up. Now, one of our best employees in that area just left because he's tired of babysitting the other guy.

So, to the supervisor I say:

Time and a quarter? Wtf is that?

It's called a compromise between time and a half after forty and nothing at all. At my last job it was all straight time, sixty hours of straight time every week is meh. The OT pay is one of the main reasons I took this job.

Found out more about the on call situation from Saturday. The on call guy with "things to do" had actually put in for the day off a few weeks ago and the guy who makes the schedule(the owner) totally forgot about it. So he was supposed to have been off and I was supposed to have been on call. Either way when I got back today I got a $20 gift card to the retail market. And the driver who got hurt is still hurting but refuses to fill out an accident report and go to the clinic to get it looked at.

Around here the law is next 2h +50%, rest +100%, weekly overtime is +50%.

Usually union contracts have better weekly stuff, like saturday 6h +50%, +100% rest, sunday +200%.
Due the progressive taxation and its paying practices no fulltimer does weekends for +50%.
For any good it's still long saturday or both days.

No idea how practicalities are today but if it's not paid when you leave you can sue and win.

Taxation is also changing to real time from yearly stuff.
Last time they changed it big the stuff was late or someway otherway for several years.

since the concert bombing yesterday, a lot of people on social media, rightfully so, are talking about "pure evil".

That leads me to something I've been thinking about lately.....the definition of Evil.

To me, it seems that evil can only be summed up as an emotion. I've said on other platforms that calling the act "pure evil" doesn't really push the conversation forward on how to stop it. In a way, it is a bit of a cop-out to me, but I realize that is a harsh perspective.

I tend to lean toward science when it comes to how I feel about things, and evil isn't really a scientific construct, or even a psychological one. It may be a more archaic view of things that we continue to use for various reasons.

The reaction to such a violent attack like happened last night is often for people to say "bomb them all" meaning, I suppose, people in the middle east? That reaction is basically the same "evil" they're rallying against, even if they aren't doing the bombing themselves. Is it far different?

Kchrpm
May 23rd, 2017, 10:51 AM
Evil is willfully doing something that harms others purely for your own benefit, not to defend/protect yourself from similar or greater harm. The more you harm them, with the less threat of harm to yourself, the more evil you are.

So killing a bunch of people that made no direct threat to you, your loved ones or your society in any way? Pure evil.

Retaliating by killing the innocent loved ones and society of your attackers? Also evil.

"Hence the problem was how to overcome not so much their conscience as the animal pity by which all normal men are affected in the presence of physical suffering. The trick was very simple and probably very effective; it consisted in turning these instincts around, as it were, in directing them toward the self. So that instead of saying: What horrible things I did to people!, the murderers would be able to say: What horrible things I had to watch in the pursuance of my duties, how heavily the task weighed upon my shoulders!"

So someone posted to my FB wall a vloggers response to the Manchester bombing and the real dregs of society came out in their droves. They were advocating everyone that's under suspicion or on a watch list be rounded up and imprisoned. I helpfully chimed in that you can't lock people up on the suspicion they might do something and they're innocent until proven guilty. This did NOT go down well. Sigh.

Drachen596

I'm pretty puzzled by some reports I've been seeing about the concert bombing. Some are saying that people from the same mosque as the guy they arrested and even his own family had reported him to the police and British Government as dangerous and a possible threat.

If that's true.. how'd they fuck up and fail to stop him?

Also I am really tired of the 24 hour news networks. All of them.

Jason
May 25th, 2017, 02:53 AM
Unless you have proof an attack is imminent, there's no way you can arrest someone because they might be a future threat. That's a really slippery slope. In all likelihood he was on their watch list, but wasn't seen as a threat to the UK. This happens quite often, actually... people who are 'threats' in theory, but intelligence agencies don't believe they have the capability of acquiring the resources, and/or having the knowledge of building a working bomb.

So now there are reports that the French, US and the guys own family told the British the guy was going to do something. France had tracked him to Libya where he disappeared for a while causing them to assume he'd gone to Syria.

It sounds more like a pretty big screw up on the side of the British if you take all that into account.

I think I've seen more than one study suggest that the people who post the most on social media about how great their relationships happen to be are the ones that feel the least secure in them.

I can't remember if the thought was that they were trying to convince themselves or others.
