I admit it, I've become a performance car elitist.

I look down on hot hatch owners with the same contempt that native Hawaiians look at visitors with.

You are merely a tourist in this republic of performance. I own a beach house here and am a member of this island's most prestigious country club.

My engine is in the back... Because it belongs there goddammit! My ingress and egress is greatly obstructed, because that curve ahead of you doesn't care if it was easy to get into your car. Practicality is for wimps. Compromises are for legislatures and marriages. This machine is purpose built, and the only thing it's made for hauling is ass.

random though: Why do people say excuse me so much now-a-days. I understand it's polite if you are truely in someone's way. But, if you are just passing in the hallway, entrance to bathroom, etc... It's expected that you will have to share the space to pass thru. You are not impeding someone's movement.

Maybe it's just because my office is in a very old building with awkward hallways/corners. But, it seems like people say it just in passing sometimes. It's just something I've noticed lately around the office.

Nothing is worse to me than trying to push a cart full of produce into a customer and finding they haven't taken their trash out for the day and its right where I need to squeeze through. Cracker Barrel's are famous for that. Another one that gets me is Jimmy John's. When you go from the front area back to the cooler area most JJ's tend to have some very tight corners which makes navigating kind of a challenge if they have things sitting in the way.

My job can be emotionally draining at times. Most of the time it is merely a daily grind kinda job. Yesterday was not. Every so often the realness of my job hits me. The impact I have on people's lives, their families, and the parents that take care of the patient. Sometimes those parents are people I know really well.

I try very hard to not be involved with anyone I know to make the connection with 'the other side' as limited as possible. The case and situation was safe, controlled, and a benefit for the child. I was not supplying any direct care, but I was a member of the transport team from the ICU and the holding area prior to surgery. I know the parents pretty damned well, the dad for 9 years.

Everything went off without a single problem, but yesterday was a wake up call of sorts. Just some random thoughts from my brain is all.

You're a nurse I believe? Sometimes I wish someone would say to you guys, 'thank you for your service'. Medical staff, especially those at the front line see some very traumatic things. I'm not sure PTSD is quite what I would call it but it must be difficult to remain detached yet caring at the same time. I've had dealings with all manner of medical staff from neurologists through to paediatricians, Speech Therapists to Physiotherapists and several in between and while I can only talk for the UK Health System (socialism and all!) every Doctor, nurse and therapist I've met have been kind, patient and most of all caring. And I've always been grateful, and made sure I've thanked every one of them profusely.

Thank you to all of them, here and abroad. Including you. People moan about their jobs but you guys are special.

Often its best to remove plates + screws down the track.
My sister had them in for 2 years, still having problems and then another doctor said "so when did they take the plates out" and was surprised they hadnt.
She had them out and it was a lot better (but still gives her some trouble 20 years later)

The nice thing about humidity is once it does get down towards 80 and below, the A/C effect on the motorcycle is enhanced. On my way home from work last night, it was 82, but as long as I was moving, I was actually starting to get a bit chilly. Of course as soon as I stopped, it'd feel hot as balls though.

Interesting. Most of the time we don't remove hardware unless it is giving the patient a hard time.

That is true IME as well - we deal with a lot of broken parts here, and most doctors we work with recommend leaving the hardware unless there is a specific reason to remove it. I've still got a Ti rod and some screws 10 years later. It's never bothered me, no point in another surgery.

Oh, let me ammend that. It's not just that I have no A/C, whatever is wrong with it causes the heater to run at full blast constantly, unless you turn off the unit at the breaker.

The thermostat appears to be working, but the unit isn't listening. Happened at 3 a.m. last night. I woke up to three loud pops, thought they were gunshots (though I was half asleep), until I started smelling that acrid burning electrical smell. At which point I thought a transformer blew or something, then I walked under my vent and felt the heat. At first I thought it was actually on fire and the heat from it was just getting blown through. I still wonder about that smell. It seemed worse than just the usual heater on for the first time all year smell.

Landlord said when I talked to her this morning, the repair guy was going to try to get there before I had to get to work at 2 p.m. This was around 9:30 a.m. Since then, no repair guy, no call from anyone, no answer when I call, and my place is inching towards 90 degrees inside. My poor dog has been in it all day while I've been at work. I might try replacing the thermostat with something from Walmart tonight, and if that works, taking it out of my rent check for the month.

FFS. It quieted down for a minute and then as I was doing my paperwork I heard them start in on each other again. I was sitting in the office and the windows were closed but we could still hear them out on the dock. There's the soul food approach like Sandra Dee's which I love, but I get bogged down in gumbo and hush puppies before I even start thinking about anything bbq'd. ;) Man, I could really go for some Sandra Dee's right now.

Honestly I don't see what's so noble about dragging someone out to a public place under the pretense of enjoying time together when actually you're just going to disappoint them in a big way. This doesn't even account for all the time between when I decided I was through with it and the point in time that we can actually get together which is effectively just time spent stringing them along. If it were me, I would just want to know ASAP.

thesameguy
July 29th, 2015, 01:10 PM
Because disappointing someone over the phone is pretty cowardly. Give her the time, look her in the eye, and let her down in a sympathetic way. At her house, in a park, where is less important than how. Not giving someone the courtesy of a face to face honesty is low, especially when it's someone who is clearly into you. The only time a remote breakup is okay is if they've done something malicious or you're physically unable to be there.

I have a coworker that has to have shitty luck. Last summer he was working in his yard and tripped over a rock and ended up driving his thigh bone up into his hip socket causing a ton of damage. He finally came back to work in Feb. Last night he was headed home from work and rolled his Jetta TDI. He had to be cut out of the car, as in the entire fucking roof had to be removed to get him out. Apparently he was no worse for wear as he was back into work this afternoon. That is some bad luck.

Why wouldn't it be? Because you have mutual friends? She might just be flirting and not want to date? Who cares? If she says no, she says no, and she probably would have said no in any way that you asked. Sad, little man
August 10th, 2015, 05:18 AM
Leon, no, this is nothing like what you describe.

Cam, I've tried that for about a year. These are basically the types of people you'll find online:

People who are overweight and unattractive. Go ahead, call me shallow, but I've tried to give people the benefit of the doubt. I've learned that I just can't make it work when there's not even the lowest level of attraction there. It's just not happening.

People who have far too many social and emotional issues to be able to connect with anyone and carry on any healthy relationship. They're searching for a mate when what they're really looking for is a solution to their own issues.

People for whom no one they find will ever be good enough for them. This probably overlaps with the last issue somewhat. Well, really they all sort of overlap. I've seen people who there is seemingly nothing wrong with, but have been trolling around on the same site for months. At a certain point you have to wonder how much they're looking for a relationship, and how much they're just looking to be validated.

Online dating is a hotbed of insecurities and emotional instabilities. And honestly we kind of created the monster, so I guess you can't be angry when it smashes a few buildings. But there's nothing emotionally healthy about distilling people down to a few photos and a few lines of text all while presenting them in a way while all it takes is one click to discard them and move onto the next person. But hey, technology has to push forward, even when it wreaks havoc on our most basic familial instincts.

Online dating is the same as real world dating, it's just online. The people are mostly the same, you're just seeing them all at once. You see someone that looks interesting, make a snap judgment based on where they are and whatever context clues you can figure out (their few sentences on dating websites, where they are, who they're with and what they're doing in real world), and then you decide how aggressive to be in your approach and what to say. People act like online dating is so crazy and dangerous because the person can be lying, but people have been lying about themselves in the real world for far longer.

If you don't want to do online dating, that's fine. Probably best not to justify it by shitting on everyone that does, though. Yes, they're all single for a reason, but so are you.

I'm not hating the people Keith, I'm hating the system. You can pretend that it's no different from normal dating, but it is, it vastly is.

For the sake of efficiency and with the help of technology, we've gutted the whole thing of its most important nuances. We've turned it all into a streamlined transaction. But we never stopped to realize that you just can't do that with this. It's not like paying for an ebay auction or buying from Amazon. I dunno, maybe that works for some, but online dating looks to me like a pretty sad and tragic parody of itself.

And yes, ultimately I think the lure of a simple solution to a complex life problem tends to attract certain people. They're not bad people, but ultimately I've come to realize that the majority of people who have enough self confidence and emotional stability to maintain a relationship are out in the real world actually meeting people.

Kch and Benior have sage advice.

SLM, it sounds like you are not looking hard enough. Online dating is totally not what you are making it out to be. I would argue that your attitude is making online dating a, "sad and tragic parody of itself." I used online dating for a while and dated nothing but pleasant, smart, attractive, successful, independent ladies--about ten in all. Some I only had one date, multiple dates with others. They were similar to me where they simply wanted to meet members of the opposite sex other than at work or a bar. I just happened to really like the last one, my wife. :)

If I got what I put in, I would be married to Amal Clooney right now. I think I've sent messages to around 250 people over the last year. And not some lame copy/paste nonsense. I have dated four people from all that.

Honestly, I think online dating has gotten a lot worse recently. Go look around for comparisons of what the experience of ok cupid is for men compared to women. Women are completely inundated by attention from men on the site, while most men struggle to make any connection. It's become extremely lopsided. There's no way for men to cut through all of the chatter of the throngs of doucebags trolling the site.

Listen, I am not god's gift to women, but the idea that a guy who has a solid job, a degree, owns a house, and is capable of supporting himself just fine has to struggle to find anyone half decent to date is ridiculous.

There are plenty of people who will demonize every form of meeting people, from bars to clubs to church to through friends to speed dating, and have personal and anecdotal stories to back it up. There are also plenty of people with positive stories from all of those methods as well.

The reality is that all of them can work, and all of them can fail miserably. There's a lot of work and lot of luck involved, no matter what you do. It does not mean that any of the processes are inherently bad.

In fact, if one of the four people you had a date with had worked out, you'd be one of the many success stories of online dating.

My suggestion to you is the same one I've made to many over the last year or so: Meetup (http://www.meetup.com). It's not a dating site, you're just finding or creating group activities to go to, but you're expanding your circle greatly, most likely meeting people with interest and similar relationship status. It's an online way to create situations for natural, real life courting. And if you don't meet anyone, you at least went out and did something you were interested in doing anyway.

YMMV, but IME you will find that none of those things matter to the type of woman you would probably like to meet. Your creditworthiness is what matters to a girl who wants you to get her a Range Rover, not a girl who wants you to fall in love with her. As men we are predisposed to value tangible criteria, but generally speaking women are predisposed to value decidedly more ethereal qualities. Of course there are exceptions in both ways, but when you're out in the wild you're going to want to compete based on attributes associated with good father/good husband, not good credit/good bankroll. Trust me when I say nothing that involves numbers has anything to do with it. You don't want to do it - possibly just because I said it - but get it out of your head that you deserve any better than you're getting with that line of thinking. And I am saying that from very personal experience, not something I read somewhere. The best person I've ever been was the person I was when everything was going wrong.

Admittedly, back when I was dating, every girl I dated had at least one negative experience with a guy.

For my profile, I wrote a silly poem. It got the ladies to at least take a second look. You have to do something different/silly/funny to elevate yourself above the douches. A good recent photo of yourself helps, and not just a selfie from your web cam or phone. Ask a friend to take a photo of you in a natural state with soft lighting. You know, something like this. ;)

RE:tsg's post
Haha yeah, I remember when my friend thought that I'd be swimming in girls because I had bought a house. He thought that because he didn't have a house. There are plenty of guys living with their moms and doing just fine. I don't know what the secret is to having women be interested in you, but it's not just making them laugh or having your own place. It helps, but it's not what attracts them. I'm still trying to figure out for sure what does, because as much as they tell you, they don't know either. The closest I can figure is confidence, even in the face of obvious and repeated failure.

RE:Cam's post
My current dating profile is a bit of stream-of-consciousness writing. I wouldn't say it "worked" as nothing has really worked for me, but it definitely got more attention than previous, more cookie cutter profiles I've had.

You can't just whip up confidence. Alas, that is the key--having the cajones to chat up that pretty lady ahead of you in the grocery store check-out line or whatever, for example.

Having a dog is surprisingly social... and a babe magnet. :p

Yes, confidence is a very slippery noodle. I had that conversation with some ladies a few weeks ago who just don't understand the struggle of results-based confidence.

I have taken to having humorous confidence. It has some but limited effectiveness.

Long story short, we couldn't really go on any sort of "date" without all of our friends knowing. It would be weird.

It really doesn't matter... just go on a date anyway, and deal with it. It could be fantastic, or it could be, I wish I would have.... It's only weird if you make it weird.

I managed to date a woman for six months, and we had all kinds of mutual friends... nobody found out.

Leon

I have only had a few dates via online dating, mostly first dates where there was no interest from one side or the other.

I did date a girl for all of January, but in the end I just wasn't that excited by the idea of taking her clothes off and ravishing her. So backed it off, and now we're reasonably good mates. So they're not all crazy / materialistic / shallow out there, and even if you don't find romance you might end up with new friends.

You do have to put in an insane amount of legwork though, amount of messages sent vs replied to ratio is shockingly bad for me.

Mark, what you're saying about them is what you think about yourself, in a way. For example, maybe YOU want "a lady who has a solid job, a degree, owns a house, and is capable of supporting herself just fine" *AND* "has struggled to find anyone half decent to date". I know someone just like that, and she's on the same boat as you, as far as dating is concerned. She's spends her time doing exercise and traveling.

I'd just like to say thanks to so many of you for making this a place where I feel welcome, even if I occasionally anger some here with the stupid stuff I post. I've been pretty depressed lately due to a couple seemingly serious problems in my life, but this place is the one online destination that I call home, and I appreciate all who participate here.

A special thanks to X for being a kind and thoughtful human being a couple days ago, to X for apparently forgiving me for past transgressions (or at least being a gentleman about it), for X and X who are practically my life coaches, and my apologies to X for being such a perfectionist that I still haven't gone to the post office to send him a care package in return for a kindness he did me way back in April, because I haven't found the perfect last thing yet. Also thanks to X whose advice has made me seem like a super-genius know-it-all with a certain software program at work. I could, and perhaps should, go on, but let me just say I'm grateful for all the happiness and knowledge that this forum brings me, for everything from bicycles to video games to cars to computers and lots of other interesting stuff.

I didn't name names because, well, I just didn't. Some of you will recognize yourselves, I have no doubt, and for others not mentioned, I sincerely thank you as well for your participation here, your friendship (even if that's just something I imagine), and your unknowing contributions to my sanity.

Edited to add: and book recommendations, too!

So I finally decided to replace my car's windshield and keep it for another year or two. My shop said the car's in fine shape and should last a good long time, so why not?

But this isn't about my car.

I am generally mistrustful of hiring anyone who doesn't have a brick-and-mortar building and hasn't been in business for several years, because I have been burned so many times by guys who drive around in vans or trucks and claim to do work for others, and then just don't bother to show up. This has happened several times over the last ten years that we've owned our current house with home repair guys. It has gotten to the point that now we have a few things around the house that we should have had done a year or two ago, but I just can't bring myself to roll the dice again and add more stress to my life.

On Monday, I made an appointment for today between 2:00 and 5:00 to have my windshield replaced at my office. I even arrived early today so I could park in a certain part of the parking garage where the guy would have a little extra room to park his truck and so he wouldn't have to work outside in the hot sun. When I made the appointment, I gave the girl both my cell phone number and my office phone that sits on my desk at work.

At 1:26 PM, I was on my office phone on a business call, and I saw my cell phone ringing with a local number. I assume it was the glass guy. About two minutes later, I finished with my call, grabbed my cell phone, and heard his voice mail. He said he would be here in ten to fifteen minutes. I called him back immediately and got his voice mail. I told him I was coming downstairs and would meet him out front, and even mentioned that I'm wearing an orange shirt today so he could spot me immediately. I was downstairs by 1:30, phone literally in hand in case he called again, and ready to show him where my car was parked.

At 2:00, I went back upstairs and called him again. Voice mail. I left a nice (courteous, I mean, even though I was a bit pissed off) voice mail and once again gave both my phone numbers.

At 2:30, an hour after he said he'd be here in ten to fifteen minutes, I called the main number to get customer service. They told me he had gone to a different job way up north and couldn't get back down here today. He never called my office phone. It has caller ID and I clear the memory several times a day so I can see when I have a recent missed call if I've stepped away from my desk.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE THESE DAYS?!

On to the next glass company I go. Maybe someone there actually gives a damn about getting paid to do their job. :smh:

Woman at work put in her two week notice. this made everyone quite happy as she is shit at the job and blames everyone including her bff who constantly defends and protects her when she screws up. i go in Wednesday night to work and find she has revoked/recanted her notice and isn't leaving.

I was quite close to putting a desk chair through a window. this woman says she wasnt trained but has done the job for three months and signed off on all our SOPs stating you know the job. i honestly spend at least two hours of my work nights fixing things she has screwed up and then get snarky emails from her and the bff who is a warehouse lead about super minor things i miss or screw up.

at least the boss is finally pissed off as well. things are going to get real and fast. i'm also trying to push my boss to get OUR lead actually trained on what we do so this warehouse lead can fuck off.

I spent a lot of years stupidly putting tobacco in my mouth. A recent movie I saw had a good line in it. It was about alcohol, but the same could be said for tobacco: "Why would I put a thief in my mouth to steal my brain?"

I also spent a lot of time working in warehouses and loading trucks with forklifts and pallet jacks.

A truck is not the maze with the minotaur in it. Why the hell can't you (and I don't mean YOU speedpimp, just the lower-case you) spit outside the truck, if you've just gotta do that? I can't judge for the motivation of the tobacco addict, but damn, you don't shit where you sleep, so to speak.

Yeah the tornado warning was not any real danger, didnt even get a decent storm.
I guess we get a lot more serious thunderstorms with hail back in Sydney, just that they are extremely unlikely to become a tornado. We have probably had 1 event in Sydney in that last 40 years that might have been a tornado, but wasn't even officially called that. It did do some serious damage and was a "significant weather event". But no one has ever used the T word.
So this was kind of cool in that I got to hear the sirens, but glad that it didn't end in any real danger. I can tell my tourist story of the siren, not a story of the doors blowing out and the suburb being wrecked.

Florida has more sinkholes than any other state, according to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. They occur because the entire state has limestone beneath it, which slowly dissolves from weak natural acids in rain and soil, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Gripe o' the day:

I've noticed an annoying trend in business emails: the incorrect usage of question marks. I blame internet forums and emoticons and smilies for this. Yes, I use them on internet forums, but not in business correspondence. Examples:

"I don't understand what you're asking for?"

"It looks like the meeting for today was cancelled?"

Those are statements, not questions. Use a period, please.

And this, an exact quote from this an email I read this morning, written by a new temp worker here, who I was told has an MBA. Attached was an invoice which showed the amount due for that invoice, and at the bottom of the page, an account summary showing totals of other invoices for 0-30 days, 31-60 days, etc.

"The attached invoice is being rejected because not sure what the past due is for?"

I guess it's possible to obtain an MBA without ever taking an English class these days.

Oh, wait, let me fix that:

I guess it's possible to obtain an MBA without ever taking an English class these days?

I believe its use is not so much a result of purely the internet age, but a quirk of writing that does not allow you to easily communicate inflection.

Using inflection to turn a statement into a question is not a creation of the internet age, but how does one do that with only typed words on a page or a screen? The longer form would be to replace the "?" in the examples you have with "I guess" or "I presume" or the like. The questioning statement does the same, except shorter.

But just like English majors are not known for their business acumen, I'm sure MBAs learn enough English to pass the class and then mostly forget what is not necessary. That's how most people are with most subjects in the highly specialized world we have created for ourselves.

George

I don't disagree, Mr. K. I guess my surprise is due to this being a very recent trend. I don't remember seeing statements ending with questions marks often enough to notice in the past, but now I see it twenty times a day.

I went to the dentist yesterday for a routine cleaning. I go every four months or so. My hygienist had case of bad breath that was making me want to vomit. She was wearing a surgical mask but it was only covering her mouth, leaving her nose exposed. Since we were face-to-face for about 45 minutes, I had the displeasure of experiencing the foul aroma that exited her nostrils every time she breathed. At one point I tried to gauge the rhythm of her breathing, so I could avoid inhaling as she was exhaling, but had very little luck. I had to resort to taking short breaths the entire time to avoid her stench.

Gotta love the irony...a person working at a dental office having bad breath. Maybe she forgot to floss that day. She was cute and everything, but seriously there's no bigger turn-off than bad breath. It's disgusting!

Went out in the car to run an errand. Seemed like an inordinate amount of aggressive driving around me today. :twitch:

It seems to me like there are more aggressive drivers in general than there used to be, even when I'm in my car.

I've driven in several states and in my experience Florida drivers are the worst. Of course I haven't been to California yet. New York and Ohio drivers are pretty decent.

In this country Quebec drivers are very douchy.
