Yeah, the motorcyclist did break the law, but last I checked the penalty for crossing a double yellow isn't a death sentence. Poor decision on his part, but the driver is a dirt bag.

Hopefully the guy at least gets assault with a deadly weapon or something, if not attempted murder. Oh, x2 since there was a passenger. He appeared to be impaired as well. He may have also shit himself.

The car driver is definitely on the mulching list - stopping someone from going faster than you for no good reason is enough to get on my list, though.

But I don't have a great deal of sympathy for people who get hurt while breaking the law. The moment you chuck out the guidelines and start writing your own you're signing up for whatever craziness ensues. I have absolutely done exactly what those bikers did - I've passed people over a double yellow - but when I do I am cognizant of the fact that I'm exposed in a number of ways. Breaking the double-yellow law and then looking for the vehicular manslaughter law to protect you is lame. You don't get to pick and choose which laws apply to you. You follow them or you don't get their protection, that's how I see it.

Sad, little man

Seriously though, pretty much everyone in that video was being an asshole. It was just a giant parade of assholes, excluding the women oddly holding hands next to the guy that got hurt. Should he have gotten hit? No. Should he have passed on a double yellow? No. The only thing that video proves is the existence of assholes.

Asshole - maybe. But "passing over unbroken lines" asshole and "deliberately rammed a motorcycle" asshole are not in the same ballpark. Or state. Or even galaxy.
One is "that was dumb", the other is "thats attempted murder"
One should be a couple of hundred dollar fine, the other a couple of hundred days in the slammer.

There is no way you can lump their behaviour as similar.
Yes you take a risk when you start breaking laws, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt expect others to attempt to kill you. I would expect you should still get protection of the law by the driver being charged and I would hope jailed or at least not allowed behind the wheel again.

My kids have had homework like that. They are probably doing an entire section on estimating. Where even if they know the correct answer, they are suppose to round it in order to see if it seems reasonable in their head. It really frustrated me too because I was doing the actual math, instead of estimating, like in the example.

It's interesting to see how language is made and modified over time. The root for the "-ty" part of a number in English, eg twenty, thirty, etc is actually ten.

So, twenty is a modification of two-ten, thirty comes from three-ten, and so-on (or their Old English equivalents for those words, at least).

That part just gets lost in the mists of language for kids who are learning to speak as they go through school I think, so you're on the mark with regards to becoming aware of it when you learn a new language. It happened for me with lots of words when I briefly studied German a few years ago.

But why confuse them by suggesting the 75 in the question at all?

If the question said "Is 70 a reasonable estimate for how many more pages Carole read on Tuesday than on Monday?" it might look less like they're trying deliberately to penalize students who can do complete triple digit subtraction in their head, and the answer would end up being philosophical. Well, the teacher's allegedly correct answer would presumably be quite philosophical too, if you're required to explain why the exact answer isn't a reasonable answer.

Or it could just say "Approximately how many more pages did Carole read on Tuesday than on Monday?".

Even people who can't do 103 - 28 in their head might be able to do 28 + 75 = 103.

70 might be a reasonable estimate depending upon some given criteria for reasonable estimate, but the question does not ask for an estimate. It only asks if 75 is a reasonable answer.
On reflection, I think maybe what it's looking for is more of a reason in the answer than just a 103-28 = 75. Maybe they were looking for something like, "well 28 is about 30 and 103 is about 100, and 100-30 = 70, which is close to 75, so 75 sounds reasonable." I think what they're trying to teach them is how to spot when calculators and computers give duff answers. E.g. in a more complicated situation they might think they've input 7.XXX times 6.XXX into a calculator but the answer it gives is 4XX.XXX, so they're supposed to know that's wrong because the answer can't possibly be >56.

In other news I came across a completely different quadratic formula this week, which I somehow managed to go through 4 years of engineering maths at university and a Maths and Further Maths A-Level without coming across before. I even scoured the internet for it but couldn't find it, so I added it to wiki in case anyone else should come across it and waste quite some time thinking they'd completely misunderstood a method that uses it.

Not sure whether to file this under education, comedy, or fear mongering of the media, but CNN fails basic science in this clip about flyaway blimp belonging to NORAD. The helium filled dirigible came loose from it’s mooring, and floated 200 miles before descending on it’s own after slowing leaking some of it’s light than air gas, helium.

“There’s fear it could have exploded. There’s Helium inside, right?”, ponders CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

Which one is the adjusted time, Summer or Winter? I prefer summer but it's mainly all the clock/watch resetting that pisses me off.

Winter is standard time, summer is adjusted. So, to be precise, you like DST, you just want to keep it all the time, like me.

And the reasons for it are totally backwards now. There are far more people who get out of work and would like some light after 5pm than there are people who need to work on farms at 5 am. It's all based on sunrise, but most of the population works inside and does miscellaneous things after work, so they should try to keep sunset more consistent.

In the UK it's still dark until about 8am mid-winter anyway even with the DST, and gets dark again at 4pm. So you go to work in the dark and then come home in the dark, unless you work from home.:) You basically spend 5 days a week without sunlight for 3 months, actually causes a lot of suicides in Scandinavia.

Not much really. Some cars need a technique more like that because the throttle and brake are too far apart to simply use the side of your foot to blip the throttle.

Traditionally, though, the throttle pedal comes lower down to the floorboard than the brake, and the graphic above shows the opposite, so the foot angle does look a little more extreme.

I had that happen once in a clothing store in Costa Mesa. Lori and I were trying on clothes and the clerk asked me, "Would you like a cocktail?" I was suspicious. "Pardon me?" I asked, to make sure I heard what I thought I heard. "Would you like a cocktail?" he said again. I was stymied. I boldly accused, "You're shitting me." Straight-faced, he said, "No, we can make you a cocktail." Lori got one, but I declined.

I've seen drinks served in retail stores. Once, back was when I was in sales and wore a suit or sportcoat and tie every day, I went into a men's store I'd never been in before. I thought it was a place like Joseph A. Banks or Men's Warehouse, but I quickly realized I was in a custom shop. It was the kind of place where you get measured by a tailor and then look at cloth swatches for the custom-made suits and shirts you're ordering. I was offered a beer before I could gracefully back out of the store before being pegged as a penniless rube who should be shopping for burgundy polyester blazers and Sansabelt trousers at JC Penney instead.

Sometimes you have to shop while drunk.

At those prices, I guess so.

Another time was at my favorite local bicycle shop. The first time I ever went in there, the owner offered me a beer. They have a small refrigerator within handy reach of the sales floor. I've never had one there but I've seen other customers (and/or maybe the owner's friends) drinking one while sitting on the sofa in front of their big-screen TV.

At best, it's 1 out of 4, though I think I could make a case that "thru" should really be "through". "Thru" is a widely accepted informal spelling but it's not really correct.

That's just the spelling issues. There should be a period after "down" and "just" should be capitalized.

Nobody raises a hand, so she calls on the first student to look her way. "Mary, can you tell me which organ of the human body expands to 10 times its usual size when stimulated?"

Mary stands up, blushing furiously. "How dare you ask such a question?" she says. "I'm going to complain to my parents, who will complain to the principal, who will have you fired!"

Mrs. Sampson is shocked by Mary's reaction, but undaunted. She asks the class the question again, and this time Sam raises his hand.

Yes, Sam?" says Mrs. Sampson. "Ma'am, the correct answer is the iris of the human eye."

"Very good, Sam. Thank you."

Mrs. Sampson then turns to Mary and says, "Mary, I have 3 things to tell you: first, it's clear that you have not done your homework. Second, you have a dirty mind. And third, I fear one day you are going to be sadly disappointed."

I'm originally British, but also Canadian now, and I quite like Rocky and Bullwinkle, which by now you've looked up in wikipedia, and I didn't actually get it either, but I didn't try too hard. I just thought it was neat to associate another animal, a squirrel, with the moose picture.

I'm wondering when the last time The Rocky And Bullwinkle show was on TV. I watched it as a kid, but it was in reruns then, in the 1970s. Of course now everything is online or available to order on DVD or download, which is great, but some things that everyone seemed to know about now have become obscure.

If LHutton hasn't found it online yet, the gag was the Cold War era Soviet villians Boris and Natasha were always up to no good, and Rocky and Bullwinkle would manage to foil their evil plans. Boris and Natasha would often say to each other in their Russian accents, "Get moose and squirrel!"

I couldn't find a video with that exact line in it, but here's one with "moose and squirrel", minus the "get".

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiney nose!
And if you ever saw it,
You would even say "it glows"

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names;
They never let poor Rudolph
Play in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas eve,
Santa came to say;
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then how the reindeer loved him!
As they shouted out with glee!!!
Rudoph the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in HIS-STOR-RY!

That's from memory only.

I forgot the intro...

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,
you know Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen,
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all

And I said "Play in any reindeer games" instead of "Join in any reindeer games".

Now, where did I put my car keys?

So I wondered about motorized picnic tables, and while there's no entry for them yet in wikipedia, they are referred to here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_Bending

Web searches suggest that in Australia they are particularly a phenomenon. (I wondered in the video whether the crews had built the tables themselves, as a bizarre idea, and then decided to drive them, or if motorized picnic tables were really a thing).

Edit: wikipedia search does not know to look for "motorized" if you give "motorised", and vice-versa.

Please don't besmirch the name of GMOs like that.

Yeah, I know it's just a joke, but the scientific consensus about GMOs is pretty clear, they're safe (unless you believe junk science websites.) Yet, people still seem to believe they're unsafe. I put people who avoid GMOs right in the same basket as the vaccine autism loonies.

We are at a point in society where very clear science is being questioned by the masses. We're one step away from mobs with pitchforks going after anyone who says the earth is round. Frankly it's scary, and it needs to stop.

Too soon to say for sure. How long did it take to link smoking to cancer? Even now slight increases in the risk of cancer with certain foods are being noted. Not saying they're definitely bad or good but I'd like to keep them labelled.

I am sure some people are against GMOs because they are worried about health issues, but that is not the sole reason to worry about GMOs. Patenting plants is a problem. Charging farmers annually for new seeds is a problem. Uncertainty about long term crossbreeding with natural plants is a problem. Asserting that your GMO seeds cannot yield plants capable of reproduction and then finding out they can suggests a problem. I am not worried about getting a disease from GMO food, but I am worried about the impact of GMO food on the economy and the ecosystem. Although I think requiring labels on GMO food creates a scare, I don't know a better way for rational people who want to vote with their dollars, so whaddayagonnado?

Good point. Monsanto has been quite predatory about the lawsuits. They've sued farmers who had seeds blow onto their field from an adjoining field owned by a different farmer. Farmers who use seeds from plants that they grow from GMO seeds are required to pay Monsanto again, even though Monsanto didn't provide those seeds themselves.

I'm also not so sure about the Roundup issue. I'm not sure that science has had time to properly show that increased amounts of Roundup on food is actually safe over the long term.

I think it's reasonable to require labeling. Let consumers decide for themselves, for whatever reasons that they may have.

A couple of thousand years. There was FINALLY some solid evidence of the dangers of tobacco by the 1920s. I'd say it would be confirmed that GMO food is dangerous by the 8th millenium AD.

About once every 2-4 weeks my mom would throw all the shoes in a basket and knock on people's doors asking if any of these shoes were theirs, apologizing for our cat. Fortunately, everyone thought it was funny, but many did stop leaving shoes outside in the back yard or in an open garage. He was once caught dragging a large work boot that was bigger than he was down the sidewalk.

This cat will apparently steal anything.
