According to Nicole Bjanes, she was driving on I-4 when the turtle was crossing the road and the car to the left of her hit the turtle and propelled it straight through the windshield. She went on to say that it takes a lot to break a windshield, 80 mph to be exact!

If you were wondering, the turtle did survive and they ended up putting it back in the water.

The creators of GIF are stupid. They designed a format that only supported 8-bit color and used a patented compression algorithm that resulted in lots of lawsuits. The only reason that the format is still used is that it supports cheap animation and the patent on LZW expired in 2003. PNG is superior to GIF for still images as it supports 24-bit color and it gets better compression. The G stands for graphics so it should be a hard G.

You're insane. 8-bit color was a LOT in 1987, there were only a handful of video cards that could even display it. It wasn't until the early '90s that truecolor capable video cards existed and quite a few years later before people really even had them. Even still, GIF survived because it was a yet longer time before anyone had the bandwidth to transmit full color images. Downloading a truecolor image in the '90s was a serious commitment. *All* technology seems stupid later on, but GIF was HUGE for '87. There was no need for anything more

Also, "choosy developers choose gif" makes zero sense.

Also, GIF 89a can handle more than 256 colors.

overpowered
May 25th, 2016, 10:05 PM
GIF89 can do more than 256 colors but support for it was not widely available and certainly not in browsers in the 90's.

I had access to 24-bit hardware in 1987, though admittedly it cost more than a car and was owned by the company I worked for and was shared by a number of engineers.

24-bit graphics hardware wasn't commonly available at home use price points until maybe the mid 1990's or maybe a bit later.

The fact is that even in the late 80's, image generation was still done in 24-bits and then downgraded to 8 bits using a combination of color quantization and dithering to minimize limits of 8 bits. I say that as someone who invented my own color quantization algorithm back then (which out performed median cut in my opinion) and implemented Floyd-Steinberg dithering in my own programs.

In a book I read on color quantization and dithering, the author made a strong argument than 24 bits isn't really enough and calculations should be made in 30 bits and quantized and dithered for 24 bit displays because color banding is still visible in 24 bits.

I really don't understand where you're coming from. Why would people implement GIF 89a in browsers for transmitting true color? JPGs existed by then, the hardware to decode and display existed by then, but we were still hampered by slow network speeds and limited storage space. Lossless compression in the mid '90s would have been useless outside of scientific applications - nobody had room or time for that shit.

I had access to 24-bit hardware in 1987, though admittedly it cost more than a car and was owned by the company I worked for and was shared by a number of engineers.

Well, then I too can't understand why Compuserv stopped at 8-bit. Everyone should have had a video card the price of a car.

24-bit graphics hardware wasn't commonly available at home use price points until maybe the mid 1990's or maybe a bit later.

Trident and Cirrus Logic both had consumer-aimed chipsets in 1991. I bought my first ISA Trident Truecolor card in '91 when I was in high school. It was $90. I sold a shit ton of computers between '92 and '99 and '93 was the crossover point. VLB gained acceptance and cheap VLB cards were everywhere. Nobody bought a 1993 computer without a truecolor-capable card. I'm not even positive you could buy one anymore - those ISA truecolor cards were a flash in the pan, because they were so slow loading images.

The fact is that even in the late 80's, image generation was still done in 24-bits and then downgraded to 8 bits using a combination of color quantization and dithering to minimize limits of 8 bits. Yes, 30-bit color is always the right answer. But in 1987 when only a few people had VGA cards and most people were rocking 16-color EGA or 2-color CGA and the fastest modem speeds were 2400bps and lots of people were still working on floppies (!!!) and a really fast CPU was a 386 you couldn't implement good lossy compression, you were limited to lossless, and nobody had the space to store, the hardware to display, or the bandwidth to transmit anything greater than 8-bits. The developers weren't stupid, they made design decisions based on use. People still use GIF 30 years later. It was pretty darned good. "GIF is stupid" is like "MPEG is stupid." Yeah, it's stupid in hindsight 25 years later. At the time, and for years it was exactly the right decision. Henry Ford was probably stupid for making cars out of steel. WHAT AN IDIOT!!!!

Tranquilizer darts generally don't hit an artery, which means that it usually takes at least a few minutes for the drug to be absorbed enough into the blood stream to take the animal down.

It's unclear to me that a gorilla would necessarily hurt a young child. I doubt that a young child would be perceived as a threat.

If you can inject into an artery, sure. Hard to do that with a dart gun.

EDIT: They're saying it could have taken up to 10 minutes and just getting shot with a dart might have agitated him enough to become violent.

I'm not an expert in gorillas or dart guns. I only know what I've read and I've read this before. There was a suicidal man recently who jumped into a lion enclosure and there was the same outcome and there were similar questions and answers given, though a lion is probably a lot more likely to attack an adult man than a gorilla would a small child.

Fast acting when it's injected into muscle?

If you can inject into an artery, sure. Hard to do that with a dart gun.

EDIT: They're saying it could have taken up to 10 minutes and just getting shot with a dart might have agitated him enough to become violent.

http://metro.co.uk/2016/05/29/why-harambe-the-gorilla-was-killed-not-tranquilized-after-boy-fell-into-enclosure-at-cincinnati-zoo-5912479/

Starts having effects within 10-30 seconds. Full effect of analgesia/sedation within 5 minutes usually. They could also do Succinylcholine, which is a muscle relaxer (paralytic) that can start having effects of paralysis within 10 seconds. Downside is the dose required for both of these drugs could be large enough volume that couldn't be delivered via dart. Further downside, is the use of succinylcholine would create an apneic scenerio which would need to be handled accordingly.

In the event of the baby being assaulted, and not having much time, killing the animal is likely the best and fastest option.

I can't see that article, but are those numbers from it, regarding the huge gorilla, or from your experience with humans? If the latter, I would assume it would only be worse (longer times, larger doses) for the large primate.

Are you talking about sedatives for humans, which I can understand you knowing quite a bit about? Other animals might vary and I'm just taking the word of zoo people, who would presumably have more specialized knowledge.

Right. Also add in the issue of the muscle mass of the silver back, requiring different dosing than the 400lb human. Etc, etc.

The possibility is that they could have sedated him using some heavy paralytics, but the repercussions would likely have landed them into a similar fashion, or worse.

Further, if they did successfully place the dart, and the gorilla collapsed on the kid, then the situation would still be worse than it currently is.

EDIT: Looked it up, not Texas (anymore?), but some states you can drive at 15. South Dakota you can drive at 14.5! Only in a few states do you have to wait until 16 to get behind the wheel with a permit.

Maybe I shouldn't respond here, but prayers are for when there's nothing we can do... When we've tried our best and out of our hands, then we put our hands together to beg God for some kind of result.

I can understand your annoyance of such comments from some hypocritical Christians, but I'm sure deep down you atheists still yearn for some sort the supernatural force for otherwise Star Wars wouldn't be so popular.

Apollo 13 crew safely returned by the amazing efforts of scientists AND by 'luck'. Science alone won't save them... Neither will they survive by having luck or prayers only.

My point was that Christians should only say that when there's really nothing that they can do.

A Christian NASA engineer would never say such a thing unless there's absolutely nothing to do. It's both professionally and theologically irresponsible!

He made a coin knife using coins that were replaced 50 years ago. It's not like being a penny is going to disguise it as some everyday object.
And the voting is good, yes a guy in smugglers voting (wonder if they voted for Tony, our smuggler wearing ex PM)
