Well, the kids are losing out, of course. Ours just started fourth grade and will be learning cursive this year, finally. We had parents' night last week and I was pleased to see big posters of how to write cursive letters on the walls in the classrooms.

They lose out in the short term by not being able to read birthday cards and letters mailed to them from grandparents, aunts & uncles, and other adults.

And who will read historical documents, diaries, personal letters, etc. once cursive is finally abolished in schools? Will it only be trained scientists/historians such as those who can read Egyptian hieroglyphics and Mayan calendars?

Taking notes in class or during a business meeting comes immediately to mind. Signing one's name on a document. Written communication other people -- writing a thank-you card, etc.

But I'm not a cursive fanatic or anything; I just think it's sad when my kids can't read birthday cards from older relatives. They just want to know if there's money or a check inside and don't care about what's written. I guess I was the same way, though.

And, speaking of fast writing, it's worth noting that (to my knowledge, anyway) shorthand has pretty much died out and we don't seem too much worse off.

There is a woman that regularly drives to the nearby park to walk her dogs. I never really thought anything of it until this morning when I saw where she drives from. She lives about three blocks away. I often walk my dog past her house to get to the park. You DRIVE THREE EFFING BLOCKS TO WALK YOUR DOGS?! I measured it on Gmaps: half-a-mile. It takes me about seven minutes to walk that. She's part of what is wrong with North American society. :smh:

Godson, 5-8 miles is obscene. I don't think I've ever gotten upto 3 miles (i let the other dogs in the park try to tire him out, rarely happens)

No. I was walking to the park and saw her drive out of her driveway. Seven minutes later I got the the park and she was there.

A male doberman pup can easily do that and more. I took him on a three mile run before my accident, and he crashed when we got back, for like 20 minutes...
