I was shocked at first because it really did sound like the n-word. But that's how the brain plays tricks on us, especially if you're subconsciously looking for that word. After listening to it a few more times it's clear she said "Nakers". She tripped over her words and tried to combine Knicks and Lakers.

I saw her Twitter apology and believe her.

Crazed_Insanity

I'm not a big fan of MSNBC because they've consistently misspelled my man Andrew Yang's name or put up the wrong pictures of him or completely outright ignored him, saying that there are 9 dem candidates, but showing only 8 pictures of the candidates... So I totally think that they suck when that kind of crap happens over and over again.

However, I do believe honest mistakes could be made, particularly when it's a live breaking news.

dodint
January 29th, 2020, 11:25 AM
What's the alternative? She's been waiting years for a Lakers story to come up so she could subversively drop in the n-word for not material gain?

Crazed_Insanity
January 29th, 2020, 11:43 AM
The alternative is that she's a closet deplorable racist Trump supporter sabotaging MSNBC messing with Californians so that she can help to MAGA! If she were a white male, 'he' probably would've been crucified already. Luckily she's not male, but being white certainly gave her no privileges.

People's nerves are just a bit too raw with such a polarizing political climate I guess. Making a huge deal out of nothing.

Person 2: "Well I can't finance a car then"

Person 1: "Why not? I've paid off part of it"

Person 2: "You have to pay off at least 50%, or maybe 80%"

Person 1: "Ok and as soon as I do that, I can finance a car?"

Person 2: "No, you gotta wait at least a month or so for the credit bureaus to catch up"

Person 1: "Bureaus? You mean there's more than one?"

Person 2: "Yeah, there's 3...and you gotta check all of them to make sure they didn't show it wrong"

Person 1: "So if they show it wrong, I have to tell them myself? They don't verify it?"

Person 2: "Not really, no. You can send them something and then a few months later they'll let you know if they agree or not"

Person 1: "What?"

Person 2: "Look, you seem like a nice enough fellow, so if you put...say 50% down payment on this car, then I'll get you a car payment for $400 a month"

Person 1: "For how long? How many months?"

Person 2: "I can't tell you that"

Person 1: "Well what's the interest rate?"

Person 2: "20%"

Jokes aside, financial debts is sort of like a form of modern day slavery...

The system encourages you to get into debt... car dealerships nowadays will actually penalize you for paying cash... financing a house essentially makes you a slave to your house..., but at least your house should eventually go up in value...

I dislike the current system, but I don’t have any clues on how to fix this complicated mess either...

Ahh, you refer to comicsgate, the lesser known evil brother of gamergate, a far-right online harassment campaign that wrought havoc among the comics press a few years ago. It brought down a whole Vader miniseries that Marvel was planning to release, all because the author put a gay character in a Star Was novel a couple of years ago and received endless harassment because of that.

Over the weekend, Mr. Musk tweeted:

Something extremely bogus is going on. Was tested for covid four times today. Two tests came back positive. Same machine, same test, same nurse. Rapid antigen test from BD.

To which an epigeneticist responded:

Rapid antigen tests trade sensitivity for speed. They return a result in <30 minutes, but can only detect COVID-19 when you're absolutely riddled with it. What's bogus is that Space Karen didn't read up on the test before complaining to his millions of followers.

This graphs shows the probability of COVID-19 detection for the available tests. Rapid antigen tests (orange) only give low false negative results for a couple of days. Space Karen's results (2 neg, followed by 2 pos later that day) are completely in line with this.

To which she added the following graph:

4 guesses!

I 'waltz' into this game not knowing what I was doing... then I 'begin' to seriously thinking about what other 5 letter words I can use, but still only got 3 out of order letters... so I made multiple 'sighs' thinking I'll probably never get it..., then boom! I got it on my 4th attempt! :p

4 guesses?

Nice!

I solved today's puzzle, but I admit I had to cheat.

I was writing a list with paper and pen and just couldn't come up with anything by trial and error after my fourth out of six guesses. I had the first, third, and fifth letters correct at that point.

How to cheat:

Go here: https://www.wordgamedictionary.com/word-lists/5-letter-words/

Once I figured out the first letter from a lucky guess, I copied all the words that began with that letter and pasted them into Excel. There were 1,111 words - yes, one thousand one hundred eleven that began with today's first letter.

I used the Text To Columns function to split the five-letter words into five columns and used filters to remove letters that I knew weren't in the puzzle from the second and fourth columns, leaving me with a pretty short list. I chose the most common of the words and that was it.

It was not a very common word, but not unheard-of, either...especially to those interested in...

...military history.

Crazed_Insanity

I think I just got lucky! Boy, you were really brute forcing it, heh? Still, I think that's called strategizing than cheating.

cat /etc/dictionaries-common/words | grep '^a...b$' | grep -v '[eliminated]'
Properly one should add...

for each eliminated position (orange) too, but sometimes that isn't necessary or can be done visually. (Actually use your own brain).

balki

I start off with a four vowel word, but I still end up averaging five guesses to get it right, so billi's strategy must be better.
AUDIO and ADIEU both have four unique vowels. I feel like AUDIO is the better of the two
I think Cuda's approach is the best; use three words to get 15 different letters. By chasing vowels I'm already repeating letters by my third word.

Crazed_Insanity

Not really my strategy, I stole it from MR2.

SportWagon

Not quite a spoiler, but a rules clarification...If the word is WHILE, and you guess NEVER
Only the first E is shown as correct but in the wrong place. (orange? mustard?)
The second E is shown as incorrect (dark gray).

If the word was NEVER I guess EVERY would show both E as correct?

In addition to restricting the patterns, the game differs from Mastermind (Bulls and Cows) in that the positions of correct and incorrect guesses is indicated.

Following is a real spoiler (bash commands to give today's answer)

cat /etc/*/words |
grep -i '^....e$' |
grep -i -v '[star]' |
grep -i '^....e$' |
grep -i -v '[mov]' |
grep -i 'i' |
grep -i -v '^...i' |
grep -i '^w...e$' |
grep -i -v '[h]' |
grep -i 'n' |
grep -i 'i' |
grep -i -v '^...n' |
grep -i -v '^..i'On some days the nearly complete answer jumps out. But not so much today, so I think if someone accidentally opens the spoiler they won't get much help unless they study hard or run the code.
But the script I use to generate that currently gets tripped up if guesses include repeated letters.

balki
January 22nd, 2022, 03:12 AM
regarding the rules clarification:
NEVER and EVERY will have E, E and R as orange/mustard: it tracks the number of times each leter shows up:
I you use EERIE as you guess you can tell if there are 0, 1, 2 or 3 E's in the puzzle.
I guess I've been using MR2's strategy all along, just not that well.
There have been a few times where I'm trying dozens of words on my last guess (luckily it doesn't penalize you for using words not in the their dictionary).
Feels like this game would be easies if English was as phonetical language.

I just try to find the last three letters, either by 'green' or 'yellow', then it's just guessing, I find that wordle's "vocabulary" is a bit limited, it goes for mostly common words.

The one thing that bothers me is that they're mostly British English terms, so what I think of as "uncommon" could really not be.

SportWagon

Its URL would suggest it ought to use a British English dictionary.

Some small tips, which might be obvious to most readers...Your record and statistics must be stored in your browser cookies. If you go to the site with a different browser, or a different browser profile (when that can be done easily) you can use knowledge gained from another session.

When I thereby once got a daily puzzle on the first try its assessment was "Genius". If I cared more, I might try to create a one-guess solving streak in that profile and see if eventually it catches on and says "You must be cheating."

Doing this seems acceptable for, for instance, determining the nuances regarding repeated letters.

Something I read somewhere, while hunting for the fabled archive, suggested that the puzzle presented is based on your browser's time settings (even though the puzzle does not run as a local app) and that your claimed time can vary by many days from the present. I have not tested that, however.

Someone whose wife is more interested in it than either he or I suggested that
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
has a link to an archive.

However, I could not spot it, and used Google to find...
https://www.devangthakkar.com/wordle_archive/

I find it uses strange scaling and I need to shrink it to have reasonable guess boxes and a tiny keyboard.

The link given earlier to wordlelike-on-demand is overly fussy about browser version and did not work for me.

Well, it's a poor strategy to guess with a word with repeated letters. You're just wasting your chances and not eliminated the as many wrong letters as possible...

Anyway, otherwise I think it's cool to find whatever method that suits you to try to beat the game... as long as you don't cheat! :p

Using repeated letters will be necessary for the final guess if the answer has repeated letters. In general it seems you want to pick a word with the top 5 most popular letters in the remaining possibilities. For the first guess at least, black results are as useful as others. Perhaps more so, since they clearly eliminate possibilities.

Occasionally it seems appropriate to repeat a letter if it is difficult otherwise to get enough of the popular letters remaining.

Speaking of creativity...
https://manpages.debian.org/testing/faketime/faketime.1.en.html
(the faketime command) can be used (under Linux, at least Debian/Ubuntu) if you run a fresh browser profile (or destroy your hard-earned powerlanguage.co.uk cookies) to apparently peek ahead at future puzzles.

Attempting to use it to go to the past I could not get past a particular https error; it seemed to keep skipping the part where I could add an exception.

And once you have established a "record", you cannot go back before it, although you can move further into the future.

This confirms that your apparent local time is used to decide which puzzle you get, and that the answers are chosen using some function driven by the date.A web search confirms my eventual thought that the orange/mustard colour is supposed to be "amber".

And, no, I never will be simply running a cron job. The mechanics of the page are even more well hidden than I expected.

Crazed_Insanity
January 23rd, 2022, 02:35 PM
Anyway, as long as I’m still guessing, I’d tend to use words without repeating letters in order to eliminate as many remaining possibilities as possible. I’d only use a repeating letter word near the end if that’s the only word I can think of to use for my final answer.

So my ‘algorithm’ has 2 phases I guess. Initial phase is to simply eliminate possibilities to narrow things down. Then enter the next phase to start guessing the actual word. Unless I got lucky, my 1st 3 guesses are usually 1st phase… and then I’d be able to attempt to guess the actual word on my 4th try.

February 25?
Hard

In Easy, although I knew the answer, my standard first two guesses eliminated so much that I couldn't reasonably stretch it beyond four...

DC comedy club had malfunctioning neon lights. We checked it out, expecting to replace the transformer that powers the lights. I pulled one of the high-voltage wires too hard and broke one of the neon tubes.

I normally like to keep my swearing to a minimum, but FFFUUUUUUCK. I mean I fucked up hard. That is the first time since I started this job that I broke some glass. I was super-apologetic and the boss said, "It's OK, Cam. I've broke a lot of glass." No, it's not really OK, but it can be fixed. I just more than doubled the complexity of the job.

We removed the broken glass and jumped it with some extra wire. I replaced the transformer and the rest of the neon lit up normally. Whew. Just have to come back later to put a new tube in.

Cam, don't sweat it. If it makes you feel any better about your situation, we've had two trucks wrecked(one totaled, the other MIGHT be fixable) since last July. One was hitting a low bridge(truck is 13'1" tall, bridge is 11'5"(the bridge catches at least five trucks a year(and this was the second truck of ours wrecked at that bridge)), and the other was a few weeks ago when the driver was leaving a vendor and had just pulled out onto the road when he drifted over too far to the right, got onto the soft shoulder and tried steering back to the left but it was dug in and the truck laid over on it's side. The same driver was responsible for both incidents(and now it wasn't me) and somehow he still has a job.

Truck drivers are hard to come by these days! :p Hope the guy learned his lessons…

Cam, do you know if he plans to keep making those glass fixtures? I've seen some pretty amazing-looking "neon" LED-based lights.

The boss is retiring soon and selling his property, probably before the end of the year.

Maybe you should buy it/take over? If you're really sick and tire of the gig/business, then of course nevermind...

Are the short bridges in Chicago?

NO! It's one of only two low clearance bridges still open in South Bend, Indiana. Google Lafayette St. Bridge, South Bend, IN and be amazed by the amount of stories of trucks being wedged underneath it's claustrophobic confines.

On the subject of Chicago clearances, my one incident of hitting a low clearance was in Chicago on Lake St. It's an EL-track that runs directly over the street. The signs say the clearance is 13'6". Bull-fluffing-schmidt. Driving under the L at 10 MPH I felt the top of my truck slam into the bottom of the tracks. The damage was just some cracks in the roof panel. After that each trip to that vendor was done either in a pickup or the cabover Isuzu.

Knowing how tall your truck is is one of the basic tenets of truck driving. There is a reason that Penske and Ryder mark the height of their rental trucks both on the outside and the inside of the vehicles.

When I was doing my time away the guy who replaced me managed to hit a 10'5" bridge in the middle of fucking Amish country. The truck was fixed and the driver is still employed, but still 13'1 vs 10'5...

Around these parts, we call that getting "Storrowed". There's a bridge underpass that grabs at least one moving truck every year.

You can look into seller financing!

That business should have a history of income, right? That’d make it much easier to get a loan for the seller than for you a nobody! :p

You should just try to negotiate something hopefully with 0 down on your side… so nothing out of your pocket! You’ll just pay back the loan with portion of your businesses future income.

You’re in it for a while. You should have pretty good idea if this business is stable or growing or declining…

If you really like it and it’s growing and if your boss really cares about his business, surely he’ll want somebody who knows what he’s doing to take over?

I've only been to Boston once and I think I immediately learned about Storrowing.

Also, the 11-foot-8 Youtube channel is an entertaining place to spend some time watching the canopener bridge do its thing: https://www.youtube.com/@11foot8plus8

That cam was the first to gain traction online, but they have changed the height since then.

In South Bend the elevated train tracks pretty much separated north and south, and there were quite a few low clearances(all along that line) that started getting closed off in the late 80's until now(that has left just Bronson St(E-W) and Lafatette St(N-S) as the only operable low clearances in town). Also Lafayette Street marked what was the beginning of the Studebaker Corridor.

Given today's political climate, I wouldn't put it down to a mere graphic design fail.

Lewis Hamilton uses 44 on his Mercedes.

The political climate change seems to happening much faster than the actual climate change.

April 1 bad taste joke?

Definitely appears to be bullshit, but posted by "Hooligans.cz Official"'s account on Twitter with a community note saying it's fake and Kroos neither said that nor has he switched his number from 8.

However, I did see something that Adidas has temporarily suspended the ability to customize jerseys you order from them because of the two 4's looking like the SS logo and halted deliveries of jerseys with the number 44. That one at least looks like a non-April Fool's joke to me - despite being reported on on 4/1, there are articles about it on CNN, BBC, The Guardian, and others.

i was going to say that the typeface looked legit, however i was under the impression that national team player numbers didn't go above 23*, but I've since seen them in high twenties or lower thirties.

* as national teams can only register 3 goalies and 20 field players.

The 44 ban on the German shirt printing thing is real.
