Newton was born in England, so he was born on December 25, in England, even though it wasn't December 25 in most of western Europe at the time.

Tyson says it was 150 year period. It was actually 170 years. Pope Gregory XIII decreed the Gregorian calendar in 1582 and most staunchly Catholic countries followed almost immediately. Great Britain and its possessions finally adopted it in 1752.

Why would they Google Paul McCartney ahead of time? I'm not saying it's not possible to find out who a person is, but it is very possible to not know who that person is before you do it.

The Beatles were bigger than just about everyone, but we're also in a much bigger world, musically and otherwise, than during the 60s and 70s. I can definitely see a way where someone born in the last 20 years could have only passing experience with the Beatles, and have never absorbed any of the details of the group, like the names of the members.

Faulty -
You missed several people that performed at the London Games. A *lot* of people did. I wouldn't expect someone to remember all of them if they weren't already pretty invested in them. And that's assuming that they even watched the ceremonies.

There are so many people on the internet who ask their internet friends for answers before they ask Google. I have a friend who does it pretty consistently on Facebook. They'd rather get it in a small chunk, delivered right to them, than have to read Wikipedia. I have asked my friend about it, and I guess I understand his explanation, but I still laugh when he asks easy to answer questions.

Just because someone shows up on TV doesn't mean people know who he is. People have to be watching the show AND paying attention, which is less and less common nowadays.

And just because you don't like someone's music doesn't mean the people that do are stupid.

It's crazy to me how people don't see these cycles repeating, that we still get the "back in my day" and "kids today" type stuff without any understanding of the reaction to their own norms when they were first introduced.

thesameguy
January 5th, 2015, 11:03 AM
Well put. It initially seemed a little crazy to me that someone today wouldn't know who the Beatles were or who the members are/were, but you're totally right - there is no particular reason why someone today should know that. That is decades old pop culture, and there are an unlimited number of reasons why you'd never run into it - and moreover no particular life-affecting reason why you should have.

The reverse of not knowing about Sir Paul McCartney, I have no idea about Kayne.
I think he is a musician, but couldn't tell you a song or if he plays an instrument.
I could google him, but can't be bothered since I'm pretty sure he isn't on the short list to be megadeths guitarist.
Had to check if I typed his name correctly.
I recognise the name so I'm guessing he is reasonably famous.

I do know McCartney wrote the song that has been argued to be the first metal song. Helter Skelter.

You could have cut-and-pasted to make sure you spelled Kanye korrectly. (Especially strange since you claim to have checked the spelling).

P.S. He has a wikipedia page, and Kanye (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanye_West) (Kanye (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kanye&action=edit)) redirects to the actual page Kanye West (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanye_West).

I actually saw him live in concert when he supported U2 on their last Australian tour. At the time I didn't know who he was and I think I only found out when someone connected it to the "gay fish" episode of South Park. These were the messages I got from the two of them:

U2 - "This is what you can do for others to make the world a better place"
KW - "Check it out - this is what I did for me"

There are so many people on the internet who ask their internet friends for answers before they ask Google. I have a friend who does it pretty consistently on Facebook. They'd rather get it in a small chunk, delivered right to them, than have to read Wikipedia. I have asked my friend about it, and I guess I understand his explanation, but I still laugh when he asks easy to answer questions.

I like to ask internet friends for information in addition to searching on my own. Here's an example, and not just to flatter you, Kchrpm, but it's true: If I have a question about Excel I will get an answer from you in the Excel Sorcery thread that I can "take to the bank", every time. That's awesome, and much appreciated. That's why I ask questions here and at other places where I know I can find subject matter experts who apparently enjoy taking the time to share their knowledge. A couple of specific answers from trusted friends can be much more useful than a wall of text at Wikipedia and similar sources.

Keep that in mind the next time I ask about something everyone here knows about except me - coming soon to a forum near you!

Some may be turned on by these, but it's just not hot to me. I'm not sure if it seems like she's trying too hard or she's completely nuts. Even Madonna would never have gotten as raunchy on stage as this. At one point, she's fellating a dildo attached to a sex doll. She's also seemingly encouraging fans close to the stage to touch her crotch, and they are doing so.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as NSFW. It probably is. You might want to have Adblock for these sites. You have been warned.

I don't really care what she does or doesn't do. I don't care for her or her music, and I'm not really even a believer in taboo so far as nobody gets hurt. She can do whatever she wants so long as she's not in my way. High traffic crossings right before major intersections all over the place. Despite all of the flashing signs that say not to stop on the tracks, people still ALWAYS do. Given that it appears two cars were on the tracks at the start, I'd say they're just idiots.

After being cutoff yesterday and almost crashing (actually hit a curb and messed up my bumper) by some idiot who proceeded to drive away, I ordered a dashcam. The Bible mentions Heaven very little. There is more talk of The Resurrection of the Last Days (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resurrection_of_the_dead).

The God of the Old Testament rewarded His followers primarily by helping them vanquish overcome their enemies in this life. And many of the writers of the New Testament believed the end of the world was coming very soon. (Seemed to be the only way to get rid of the Romans?)

Hi I'm Jessica Fletcher. Someone in this room will be murdered in the next 10 minutes. And I'll be able to catch the killer. So best make it me.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2191990/Murder-capital-world-Quiet-seaside-town-Cabot-Cove-named-dangerous-place-Earth.html

Amateur detective Jessica Fletcher, played by Angela Lansbury, encountered a total of 274 killings in the small town in Maine, despite it having a population of just 3,500.

This gives it an annual murder rate of 1,490 per million — more than 50 per cent higher than Honduras, where it is 910 per million.

In the last two years 1,000 women have been murdered in the country - and 90 percent were not even investigated.

And Cabot Cove was even further ahead of El Salvador, a country which recently celebrated a unique milestone - its first day in three years when nobody was murdered.

That's not a giant bear. That's a black bear. They're a lot smaller than brown bears like grizzlies or kodiaks.

That video also led to this masterpiece:

Per the black bear. They are like cats, very docile animals. I wouldn't be worried about them.

I would still give them a wide berth, but yeah, they tend not to attack humans. Generally speaking, if you don't mess with them, they won't mess with you. Still, some people have been killed.

I've heard black bears described as being like giant black labs. They can be as docile as a squirrel, but it's still a freaking bear so I will give it all the space it needs.

Totally agree. I don't tend to interact with any wild animals unless I absolutely must. Racoons included.

Had a coon living in my ceiling back in '02. Once it was trapped and gone the drop ceiling in the kitchen had to be replaced. Nothing beats walking into the kitchen and having coon piss start pouring out of the ceiling tiles. Somehow it got in under the eaves on the roof and had a field day for a week or so.

The problem probably arises from the "differing medical standards" and risk of people suffering some mishap en-route.

But yes, medical tourism is big within Asia. It was (not sure about now) cheaper to fly to Bangkok for a few days and spend time in a hospital which specialises in medical check-ups, rather than to get it done in Hong Kong, to the extent that at least one offers "check-up packages": https://www.bumrungrad.com/en/health-check-up-bangkok-thailand/check-up-packages
