What da fuq is this shit?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfrtNkNq48Y&ab_channel=MickJohnson

The featured car was the overall leader of LMP1. The car he hit is me, coming a solid 5th in LMP2.

The lap was the last lap. The leader was coming in to take the checkered while I was about to take the white flag. There's no rhyme or reason (other than glory) for why I didn't simply let him past, but that was not his problem. His problem was making sure he uses his brake pedal.

After the race he gets on chat and complains that I was driving too slow. He claimed that I was 40kmh slower than the LMP2 leader in that chicane. He said it was dangerous.

I said that his logic was stupid and I don't care how much slower I am than what the leader is.

He signs off by saying that he will lodge a protest for intentional wrecking. I have the whole chat log screen-shotted and the replay saved in case I need it.

Look at his driving record (https://members.iracing.com/membersite/member/CareerStats.do?custid=430124) for crying out loud? Surely he would know better.

He is at fault.
And an idiot... why in the hell he went on to pass you? At the last corner of the last lap of a race he was winning?
What if he would have spun out because of his actions?
Stupid ways to throw away a victory and where to look for them.

Many drivers have an arrogant, delusional entitlement about lapping slower cars.

So… I was having a discussion with some people on a discord server about the above incident.

A few of them seemed to very strongly agree with the driver who hit me. One of them even shared this video in support of his argument, saying that the car he was lapping took a stupid line and he had no time to react so therefore it was not his fault.

So I took the roasting as best I could and I’ve come here seeking validation and hugs pease make the bad drivers stahhp

The video with you is so obviously the LMP1 driver's fault. He was so far back, and you're going to into a tight, technical section. Were you supposed to just come to stop long before the turn-in point? Fuck that guy, and fuck the people agreeing with him. Just because you're in a faster class doesn't mean others are supposed to jump out of the way like a pedestrian in Crazy Taxi.

You can rebut with iRacing's tutorial videos about passing etiquitte: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuvYtSfEG90&list=PLqZLBOpI5JFKebBA_i-SCkGRRypXovWv6&index=11

"There is one rule that must be followed in all forms of motorsport. This is the big one; no matter what series, track, or car you're driving. It is the responsibility of the overtaking driver, meaning the car that is attempting to execute the pass, to make sure that the pass is made cleanly and incident-free."

I think part 7c of that series is more pertinent here.

But here is how the conversation started. I am going to leave it because me pushing the issue breeds negativity and I've lost their ear. They need someone else to explain it for them, or figure it out for themselves.

I just had a good ESS race which I am quite proud of. Now for some reason if I turn on my Fanatec wheel after launching into the game my shift lights and gear indicator displays don't work, so I had none of that available for the whole 1hr race.

Gridded fourth in class and on lap 1 I went a leeeeeeeetle bit too hot into the Dunlop chicane and nudged the side of another driver, which meant I had aero damage right from the beginning. I got hung out to dry big time on the first run out of Tetre Rouge and was in 8th place or something by the first chicane. I lost no further positions for the entire race, but with the aero damage I couldn't attack, only keep up with the driver ahead. He slipped a few further seconds ahead over the opening five laps but never got more than 6 seconds ahead.

Another problem: I don't know if it was me or the car damage but I felt like my brakes weren't as effective and found myself under-braking into most of the turns. This did mean that I nipped a brake on far fewer occasions than previously, so to coin a phrase close enough to a pun, I just rolled with it.

A few of the other cars fell off for silly reasons and I was up to 5th at the pit stops. After they'd shaken themselves out, I was for some reason in 3rd and had no idea why. A quick review of the replay gave me my answer. These two had a really good battle for quite a few laps, but it all fell apart at the wrong moment. Sadly the replay cuts out right at the good part.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-95wcU2EDA&ab_channel=MickJohnson

After that I maintained my distance to the car ahead as best I could in case he made a mistake but we stayed in formation and I finished 3rd in class. A fine result while battling through a compounded stack of annoying issues. Time for bed :D

Nice. There are different brake pads with different friction levels. That could account for your braking issue, if you happen to be using a new set that you did not use before. ;) I normally use medium friction pads.

I think the way to interpret a -1 is that you finished where the system expected you would, which seems more or less correct at least based on what is visible here; everyone above you has a higher irating and everybody below you is lower.

It's kind of interesting that it doesn't seem like anyone has attempted to reverse engineer more precisely how the irating system works, even though we have a good bit of data available in the form of everyone's irating, and change in rating after a race. I guess probably because it doesn't really matter and doesn't change how you'd race anyway.

retsmah
May 9th, 2021, 08:03 AM
This may not be new info to you, but this is a pretty good high level description of the system (https://boxthislap.org/how-irating-works/), if you weren't already familiar with the Elo rating system, which is at least similar to what iRacing (and a bunch of other games) use.

Hairpin turn 5 is a ripper! 10 spots gained by the second lap is an achievement. Or not really, depending on your perspective...

It's indicative of very smart, consistent driving and making good decisions to keep out of trouble. It shows you don't need alien talent to gain a lot of places with little effort, just a good head. It's incredibly satisfying to participate in... and watch!

It's similar to my last race, for which I posted the results sheet above, except the first few laps were incredibly clean with no major sausages into turn 5 and only one or two cars losing a lot of places. I relied on mid-race attrition to gain spots as I am pretty sure I didn't pass a single car on track for position, plus a pit stop in which I lost less places than the guy immediately ahead of me.

Similar results, similar tactics, same track, and we were both driving Porsches. What more could you want?

This is totally random, and not at all related to iRacing, but getting into the game and having to calculate time zones in different parts of the world has made me realise that pacific time USA is actually only a wee bit ahead of my time zone.

I am used to staying up just past midnight on Sundays to watch F1 and MotoGP, because I am 8-10 hours ahead of European time. And watching any racing at, say... Indianapolis was out of the question because the race would finish almost as normal people are getting up to go to work. So that all happens while it's dark here.

But for the west coast of the USA, midnight for them is 5pm for me. Currently it's 06:30 there as I type this, and 23:30 for me. They are 17 hours behind me, but that means they're also 7 hours ahead, which is my big realisation.

I've been watching some RenceTheFence playing iRacing on Twitch and he does Late Nights with RTF, which happens in my afternoons/evenings. Such a good vibe. There will be plenty of locals watching at that time, and heaps of Aussies tune in because it's right in the perfect time to watch. His team won bottom split in the N24 and yep, you guessed it: he drove the early morning stints while his team mates slept.

Pay no mind to the train of thought I am typing out here. It's interesting, is all :)

I felt so connected to the car that I was having one of those out-of-body experiences as reported by Ayrton Senna, like the car was an extension of my body, connected directly to my brain. Did Spa again tonight. I got two third places in a row :)

But it is a safety rating killer. I was never one to complain about off-tracks at Spa like everyone else... when I was driving a GT3 car. In the faster GTEs it's really tough to stay within the bounds.

I've yet to give it a go in the LMP2 but I imagine it will be slightly easier due to the car being more nimble.

We came second in our EES Spa six-hour this evening. We inherited the position a few laps from the finish when the 2nd placed car tagged the grass entering Blachimont and ended up on its roof.

Unfortunately I won't be able to join Cam and Tim for their race in a few hours. I had so much fun and want to do another race.

Cam if you read this before your race, you will need to save fuel. If you drive flat-out each stint is almost exactly 60 minutes, or 26 laps. Our laps were in the 2:13 - 2:14 range. It's not too much trouble to stretch a stint to 27 or 28 laps, and you will need that spare lap or two for the end.

I have screenshots.

My bro and I finished 5th in class today at the Spa 6 hour. We started 38th overall and finished 16th. We were 18th in class or something at the start. We just kept it clean and consistent for the most part. More importantly, we did not damage the car. We got spun in the chicane early on, but no damage or even a 0x. I pushed hard in my first stint, but saved fuel on the second two. Tim saved a bit of fuel during his third stint, allowing me enough leeway to finish the last hour without a splash and dash. Things went really well. :)

Rare White Ape
May 23rd, 2021, 04:33 AM
Nice job! Hopefully my tip about fuel usage was beneficial to you.

I did see a few cars in our split suddenly realising that fuel use would be a factor. The overall leader slowed quite considerably on one lap mid-race before pitting, but I cannot speculate as to why. Perhaps they simply forgot to pit, which is one way to go about extending the pit window.

I took the car for stint #5 for my second stint and was following the Corvette that we had been chasing. It started on pole but was in 4th place, and I figured it was wise about the fuel stops and was just driving 1 second slower per lap to fuel save. I wasn't confident about my speed so chose to sit on his rear bumper until he made a mistake. 5 laps later off he went, and after that he dropped off quite quickly and never regained track position. In that time following the 'Vette I'd managed to save quite a lot, even though we were both catching the car in 3rd. I passed the 3rd placed Ferrari after it got a bad pass from an LMP2 up out of Eau Rouge and I took advantage.

I handed over to our closing driver who made the on-track pass to get the Ferrari again, then kept the car on pace to stay on the podium. The 2nd placed Porsche flipped it into the weeds four laps from the end! I think we had 0.2 laps of fuel left when he crossed the line.

Cam
May 23rd, 2021, 07:28 AM
Yeah, thanks for the fuel advice, Mick. We obviously saved enough to not have to splash-and-dash. Tim came out for this last stint with just about two hours left on the clock. The fifth place car was holding the gap at about 5 seconds for half of Tim's stint, who was short-shifting. Then, the fifth place car's pace noticeably slowed, especially on Kemmel. This tells me they dialed back their engine map. Tim made the pass and pulled a small gap before pitting. I got in the car, with the them right on my rear bumper leaving the pits, with exactly one hour remaining. I was short-shifting and lifting early, but still slowly pulled away from them. Fourth was miles ahead, so I just brought the car home with barely enough fuel for a cool-down lap. :D It was a good race.

Cam

Unless you are really good at saving fuel, you have to do three stops in the GT Enduro series. Tim came up with our strategy after some trial and error. (We failed at fuel savings.) Start the race with a little more than half-a-tank of fuel. That way, we can be a bit faster at the beginning of the race. Then, take a full tank and no tires about 1/2 hour in. The other driver gets in the car at the half-way mark, taking tires and a little more than half-a-tank of fuel. Final stop is for a full tank and no tires with about 50 minutes to go. This strategy has worked quite well for us. I am surprised that I have not noticed any other team doing it. It is simple and effective. Most teams take three full tanks, then take a splash-n-dash at the end. It gives us slightly more time driving with a lighter fuel load.

WTF is with oval drivers not stepping on the gas when the green flag drops? I just did two oval races in a row where other drivers ahead of me did not accelerate when the green lights came on. I got a black flagged for passing on the inside. I understand that I am not supposed to pass cars before the S/F line, but there is something wrong when a car is pacing and just stays the pace speed when the green flag drops after a caution.

A racing buddy bought me the Dallara IR18 for making him a paint job for the Indy 500. I did a few races at Indianapolis oval this week. Just finished one where I intended to just work in my oval SR and get another race toward my A oval license. After the start, I was just hanging in the draft of the leaders. Several cars wrecked out and I found myself in 5th. I pitted as late as possible, one lap later than the leaders. I pitted and came out still in 1st position! Eventually, someone caught me, but they could not pass because of the aero wash in the corners. He pitted a lap earlier than I did and I came out side-by-side with him. We traded positions a couple of times, but eventually, he was able to take the lead and hold it. Except for that, my Indy experience has been excruciatingly boring. I enjoy Street Stock though.

I have enough races to meet my minimum participation requirements for license promotion. I just need to get my SR above 4.

I enjoy the trucks, but the racing is rough. Lots of bashers. :| The secret is to not slide too much. If you race rookie trucks, the sets are fixed, but you can adjust brake bias. Set it to about 50% and map a button for the handbrake for tight corners.

VRS GT Enduro was at COTA this week. Tim and I normally just do the Sunday session. We did the Saturday session this week, just because we were available. Saturday, we did our usual three-stop strategy, but noticed several cars doing a two-stopper. We had a bit of trouble and finished 22nd. Sunday, I suggested we try a two-stop strategy, with me doing the first and third hour. Normally, we split the driving 50/50, but Tim humoured my experiment. I had reasonable pace and brought the car from twelfth on the grid to fifth before the first round of pit stops. Tim had a great drive and was fighting for fourth before the second stop. I got back in the car and eventually brought the car home in third. That is equal to our best finish in the series and our best finish this season. :) I streamed it if you want to check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iVEfBeXkjc

It was good to get a fifth-in-class finish at the 'Ring enduro also.

I look forward to giving them a go also. I am a bit more interested in the new Spec Racer Ford.

I am happy with my overall performance this season. I feel like I improved my own driving and significantly decreased the self-caused errors. I still get caught up in other's garbage more often than I would like. There are SO many bombers and wreckers. I stopped racing GTE in the latter half of the season because of it. I just became disillusioned racing the Euro Sprints, IMSA Hagerty Series and the GTE Enduros. I feel like I could not do a race without getting caught up in someone else's garbage. :smh:

I am happy to have the little crew I race with on Tuesday and Thursday nights. They are good, clean, level-headed racers. I regularly do endurance races with them, which now includes Rare White Ape. Thanks for the shout :) I’m honoured to join you guys, even though I haven’t really raced with you all yet.

I haven’t found the same issues as you have in GTE, but I think that would mostly be down to the times I choose to do my races. Mid-afternoon into the evening in Oz is early morning to very late night for the USA and Europe, so it’s common to get some high SOF grids in a single split. Been having a ball with multi class racing; I was built for that shit, and that shit was built for me. It doesn’t even matter if you’re losing either. There’s the endurance aspect of looking forward to how you and your team goes over a long race (and as we have experienced, some late-race shenanigans lead to awesome finishes!) plus the fact that you’re endlessly busy dealing with traffic for that extra layer of fun.

This season was my first so I’m not too worried about my performance over the weeks, but I’m still interested in how I went. I’ve learned SO MUCH in the last 13 weeks about driving quickly and efficiently, more than I’d learned in my couple of years playing GTS, where you learn more about defensive driving than anything… to the point where I wonder how much faster I would be in GTS if I went back to that for a few races. I’ve learned new things about racing lines and efficiency of speed, and surviving the first lap, and how to manage traffic, and fuel strategies, and working towards the end game, and consistency, and NOT CRASHING, and the pain of dropping out of a 24-hour race, and just how much damn fun you can have sim racing. I loved it before, but I really really really love it now.

Tim and I did the VRS GT Enduro early this morning instead of our usual time slot. I did not stream it because I was still asleep when Tim started the race. He gridded 36th and brought the car up to 8th, I think before I got in the car at the half-way point. We did our normal three-stop strategy. Alas, I got hit by a backmarker who lost control of their car. It necessitated 50 seconds worth of repairs during my last stop. Unfortunately for us, many teams used a two-stop strategy. We lost a lot of time due to the extra stop and repairs. We finished 12th, which is pretty respectable considering we started 36th.

I fought hard to get my oval SR above 4 to get my A oval license. It is difficult because of wreckers. When you go up a license class, your SR drops by 1. Did a couple more oval races and got wrecked multiple times in both of them. My SR dropped below 3 because of it. Now, if I do not get my SR above 3 before the end of the week, I will be demoted to B. I have to laugh at the absurdity of it.

Considering it is supposed to be an entry-level open-wheeler, it's going to turn off a lot of new drivers. I believe it is going to have the opposite effect of what I think iRacing wants, which is more drivers in open-wheel racing. Instead, it will drive even more drivers to the GT cars.

I was looking through the season two stats. There is one driver that did 15 full series! That is dedication. I do a lot of racing, but I only did six full series. I narrowly missed out on two more, because I gave up on racing GTE in the latter half of the season.

Haven't been able to do much iracing for a few weeks, but took off work early today and was able to get in some races in the Formula Vee, 2x each at Lime Rock and some weird Charlotte config I have not seen before.

Ended up with a win and two thirds, I think mostly down to the low quality of driving you noted Cam. Usually there's several guys that I would have no hope of keeping up with, but I'm gaining a lot of positions from crashes.

I've found the Formula Vee fairly fun to drive, except that the gearing is kind of terrible. The gap between 2nd and 3rd is huge, you end up with the engine really lugged down in 3rd through a lot of corners.

I managed to get a stable enough connection that I could finally get some races under my belt :D

How? By putting my phone's SIM card in my iPad. It has a bigger antenna and battery, so gets a better signal and won't heat up and drain battery power like my phone does. It's just a pain to switch between them, so I'll ask my provider if I can get another SIM to share the data. I'm still testing it though, so I won't commit to enduros just yet, but I did do two GT3 races tonight on a 200-300 ping (normal for my region) without issue, even getting right on the rear bumper of someone at one stage and not having a netcode incident.

And I'm also now in the 2K iRating club :)

I qualified pole for the VRS Sprint in my split, with a 1:19.4, and immediately spun off into turn 1 after the green, becoming last car on track

I waited for others to fall off, as they normally do at Road Atlanta, and undercut in the pits at the 20-minute mark to avoid being held up by a few cars in the bottom half of the top ten. One of the guys I was trying to avoid exited the pits right in front of me on the very next lap doing his own undercut, so I made sure to stay under his rear wing exiting the hairpin and got him at the chicane, which put me up to 6th.

From there I just kept my nose clean, with a mystery promotion to 5th with two laps to go. 50-sum iRating gained and over the 2K mark!

And of course I was driving the Porsche :shocker:

It's good to be back.

Next time I’ll make sure to keep it pointing straight on cold tyres. I could’ve gotten 3rd as I was 11 seconds adrift, which is about the same amount of time lost after the spin. The two guys in the lead were lapping faster than me, so would’ve beaten me.

That Porsche is such a challenge to drive at Road Atlanta. The abundance of tricky corners coupled with that rear engine makes it hard to manage. It’s not easy to drive like the other GT3s I’ve tried! More like a PCup with extra grip.

After a couple of tough races I’ve decided to retire the car for this week, and if I venture into GT3s again it’ll be with the Mercedes. But I will take it to IMSA as it has been added to that car roster.

I did a 75 lap Indy Oval race tonight at Texas Motor Speedway. I was intentionally the slowest qualifier of 24 cars and qualified 16th. Yes, a full third of the grid did not set a qualifying time. :erm: I started from the pits, so I was dead last. I played it conservative at first and hoped for a timely caution around lap 20. I knew from a race earlier in the week how far I could go on a tank, which was about 3/4 of the race. There were a few cautions in the first 20 laps and I decided to pit during a caution on lap 18 or so, I think. I thought it would be cutting it close, but if there were more cautions, I could make it on the rest of my fuel. Because of that, I gradually made my way to the front without really passing anyone. I finished 2nd. I kind of wish I streamed it.

I have had my B Dirt Road license for quite some time. There were never any B races though... until this season. There are now a B iRX and a B Pro Truck series. That said, I did two each today and got my A Dirt Road license. :hard:

The first truck race I did, I used the Pro 2 in the Pro 2 & 4 series. I was the only one in the server racing Pro 2, so I won my class. Did not get any iRating out of it, but I got some SR. The second race, I was in the Pro 4. I was out-qualified by a Pro 2 driver with 7K+ iR. The Pro 4 should be faster, but I am only using the default iRacing setup. Luckily, I got the hole-shot into T1 and pretty much dominated the race. I could see the 7K dude behind me, but I slowly pulled away. He advertised his site for setups at the end of the race.

The RX races I did were pretty fun. In iRX, I start at the back every time and just let everyone go. I can normally pick up several positions through attrition and maybe pass a few guys too.

Rare White Ape
June 20th, 2021, 08:48 PM
I tried iRX in the VW during a solo test a few weeks ago. I cannot get my head around it. The car feels like it can corner faster than it actually does, and I just end up sliding not-so-gracefully into the barriers or into the grass. It definitely seems like a series where patience pays off. I saw a clip from Emree where she had it on its roof at Charlotte on lap 1 but still won because she didn't crash after that

Dirt road racing is a challenge, for sure. Many people over-drive the car. The fast guys seem to be able to throw the vehicle sideways entering corners to get around. The trick is to not spin the tires too much and brake early. Many noobs just treat the throttle like an on/off switch, which hurts their lap times. Don’t slide too much and manage wheel spin with the throttle. Try spectating a race and ride along with the quick drivers to see how they do it. Some guys use high gears in corners to manage wheel-spin. I use delicate throttle inputs.

The cars and the trucks are different beasts, but I think driving one has helped driving the other. I am still a couple of seconds a lap slower than the fast guys, which is way off the pace at ~40 seconds a lap. However, I am much faster than the noobs. My dirt road iRating is ~500 higher than my road iR at the moment. Last night, I legit beat a dude with ~4000 iR. :hard:

Oh sweet, thank you. Something new this season that passed me by.

I took a bit of a break during the middle of this week from racing, due to the unsatisfying racing I've had. The new Formula Vee is damn hard to drive so I'm just not going to bother with it too much, and while I love Road Atlanta and the new Porsche, the GT3 racing there is always hit-and-miss because all the dickheads are attracted to GT3 (some self-analysis might be required there :p) and I haven't had a good time keeping that car's thicc behind where it needs to be.

But I got stuck into a couple of races tonight, opting for the Mercedes instead. Two really good finishes in the fixed GT3 Challenge, but two shit races in the VRS Sprint series. In the second of those I got ploughed by some cock (driving a... you guessed it, a BMW) on lap 1 who simply didn't let off the throttle when coming off the hill. I wasn't even sideways, just 5km/h slower and he just ran me off the road. Prior to this he went wide at T1 where I passed him into that tight turn 3 hairpin, he banged my door, then exiting 5 tagged my bumper, sent me spinning, and then punted me while he continued with little penalty.

Last race of the night was a good one, so I'll end it on a high note. I fluffed qualifying so started 13th. I passed one car on lap 1, then let the cars ahead do their pirouettes as usual. I was up to 9th on lap 7 when a McLaren passed me. I sat behind letting him catch up the few seconds to the cars ahead, making up more spots as others did the graceful slide to the back of the field. The McLaren eventually caught my old nemesis, a BMW, and tried numerous times over 5 laps to pass it in the chicane. He couldn't make it stick and we just ended up losing time. I was being polite and waiting for my turn but the car behind me had gained 3 seconds and was only 1 second off my bumper, so I prepared to notch up the aggression and make my move. On lap 14 I was right under the tail of the McLaren as he made yet another attempt at a pass on the chicane, then the most amazing thing happened: the BMW fucked up! He took out the McLaren and the car following me, and cleared my path to 4th place.

Cool. Often, you just have to be clean and patient. Problems like that take care of themselves. :D

The start of the VRS GT Enduro at Road Atlanta was a good example. We started 23rd and were up to 10th by the end of lap four. A few laps later, we were up to 8th. Unfortunately, Tim had a couple of off-tracks that damaged the car enough that we called it quits.

Dirt road races are another good example. I always intentionally start at the back. I just stay clean if I can. My iR just keeps going up, because many of my competitors struggle.

Yesterday we did the VRS Enduro at Hockenheim. My god that track bores me. We started 46th and finished 21st. I had 1x for my 1 hour stint, so that was good.

Today was not the most auspicious day. I need to do some D and C races for the participation credits, so I entered a Ferrari and a Mazda race. Watkins Glen omitted the bus stop this week so it’s a high speed run down that long straight. Halfway into the race I was the second car in a tight pack of three, in about 8th place. We went up the hill with the lead car covering to the right with me in the slip stream. The car behind moved left to pull alongside and the lead car took the line entering the right-hander, preventing the pass. Next lap, same thing, except this time the lead car stayed on the right which allowed the following car to pass me. We entered the left-hander approaching the boot and the cars ahead had to check up for some reason, but I had nowhere to go and the added brake pressure caused me to lose the rear and spin. I avoided hitting the cars ahead but now I was stuck facing the wall on the blind apex. Four seconds behind us was another pack of cars, who obviously didn’t get the memo about the car stopped on the left, and to go right. Four cars plowed into me. Esc, fast repair, last place.

After that, Mazdas at Okayama. I was in fifth with fourth place between 0.2 and 0.5 seconds ahead for the whole race. I had a few goes trying to pass into the hairpin but couldn’t make it stick, which is so common on this circuit. I was having such a good time, until the final lap while trying to get a good run onto the back straight, the car ahead adjusted its line and I grazed his rear bumper ever so gently, but that was enough to spin the car. I got on the radio right away and apologised, but he was pretty unhappy and let the world know via text chat. I feel bad about that one.

Finally, I went to ESS and tried my hand at Spa, where I usually do really well. But ehhhhhh qualified like 20th in class, got caught up in a lap 1 kerfuffle, got caught in another kerfuffle on lap 5, had damage so pitted early, and finished 12th. But I somehow still gained both SR and IR for that effort so… *shrug*

Not as impressive as what you guys have been up to, but I won my first race of 2021 yesterday! Not quite bottom split rookie series!

A few seconds of each lap crossing start finish shows mostly what happened: started 4th, got up to 1st through cars crashing out (with just a little accident avoidance required). Had a car overtake me for 2nd, got back by him and then led the rest of the race. Thought he was going to challenge me on the last lap but as the video shows he couldn't maintain that pace!

I did the next race - completely fluffed my qualifying so started in the back. Finished P3. I would have had 2nd if I managed traffic better - I should have pitted early when I came up behind two GT3s near the end of a lap. They cost me three seconds going over the hill!

I have just found out that the GTE Endurance Series is next season going to morph into the IMSA Endurance Series, running every two weeks and mirroring that week's circuits.

This pleases me immensely.

And speaking of IMSA, here's part of a race I did on Thursday night. I completely fluffed my qualifying and started at the back, setting no time. Shown is lap 1, and then the last three laps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC47upaMYQA&ab_channel=MickJohnson

Yeah that's right... I almost completed the last-to-first challenge :D

I was in third before the end of lap 1, having started 10th in GTE. After lap 1 the battle the two cars ahead had a minor coming together at the final chicane, leaving the Porsche to fall into our clutches, leading to a three way Porsche fight for the podium. The killer strategy here is to pit on lap 12 and get yourself out of the fight, and delay your involvement with the GT3s. That left me with 8 laps of clear track to hammer down and set fast lap times. There was one lap where I got caught behind a GT3 going over the hill.

On lap 20 the leader came out of the pits only a few seconds from my front bumper, so I proceeded to chase him down until the end. He was doing a few desperate moves to lap cars over the hill and even punted off a GT3 by mistake. Two laps from the end I set myself up to pass him going down the straight, but wasn't quite close enough - maybe 0.7 off his rear. On the last lap that gap was 0.4. Just 0.1 closer and I think I might have been able to sneak up the left and get him.

I was shaking like a leaf afterwards. This is perhaps my best drive so far. This is as close as I got to winning the damn thing!

We are 4:5 hours in, started from pit lane to avoid carnage. Wasn’t necessary as this split has been very good. I drove stint 2 and handed over to the next driver, but a thunderstorm swept his town and dropped his internet only three laps in, so I jumped back in and did a double. Currently 35th and lapping like a pack of mad dogs.

Nearly 8 hours in and sitting in 30th. The driver who had a disconnect before had another one on his second stint! This time it was a full power outage, can you believe it? So we are 4 laps off the lead but that doesn't matter, we are having fun! Slowly catching 29th...

I am off to bed, ready to hop in again in about 7 hours.

Rare White Ape
July 24th, 2021, 05:39 PM
I woke up and got in again at the 16-hour mark, we were in 21st when I woke up and managed 18th by the time I got out of the car. We have been double-stinting tyres to save 30 seconds per stop, thus unlapping ourselves gradually from the top 20 after the disconnects earlier on. With each pit stop on Spa's brutal endurance pit lane taking over 2m 20s - which is roughly one whole lap in time - it's important to keep the car out of the pits for as long as possible.

Right now at 6 hours to go we are sitting 16th but gradually losing time to the cars ahead, although we can keep pace over a stint thanks to the tyre strategy, plus we are off-sequence so that might work to our advantage later on.

For some reason they have pitted early a number of times and only sit 10 seconds ahead of us.

There might be some shared blame on that one. Lap 6 and you're blocking faster cars trying to overtake? Maybe it's the real-world mindset taking over for me, but he was faster the whole clip and the prudent thing to do would've been to give him space. You would have lost a position but you would have made it farther into the race and probably could've been faster by following him to the next pack of cars.

Not trying to be harsh, just adding a different perspective.

I'd be on RWA's side here, the yellow car was a full car length behind him on corner entry. I would definitely not call taking the racing line there blocking, or even defending the corner.

This is for me the most frustrating thing in iracing, when you aren't even defending a corner and the guy behind you just drives into the back of you. Like if you are going to dive bomb at least move to the inside before the corner to indicate you are going to do it.

Rest of the race was pretty uneventful, had pressure for the rest of the race from a car about 1 second back but he never got closer than 0.5 seconds.

Nice driving. Formula Vee is hard so I don't bother with it.

Speaking of hard, I'm starting to drive the V8 Supercars in preparation for the Bathurst 1000. As a driver of GT cars, this is oooof territory. I have to completely change my driving style just to set a decent lap time.

I've not entered a race yet because this week is Detroit and Detroit is punishing, but I have joined a few practice lobbies. I'm trying to get into the 1:32s. Best so far is a 1:33.8, with the fast guys doing a 1:28 and not looking like they ever break a sweat. I wonder if these people just drive the Supercars and not bother with anything else.

I've basically decided that at the end of the current season I will severely curtail my involvement in any GT3 racing, apart from special events or the odd week that takes my fancy. The clip above was yesterday afternoon. Cam's best mate Daniel Gray10 was in the race. He didn't cause this collision, but he did cause another one that I wasn't involved in. The sheer amount of angry and impatient arse holes in GT3 is astounding!

I did a Supercars race right after this and it was an amazing experience. I spent maybe half an hour doing practice, then did the GT3 Challenge, then back to Imola for more practice and to enter the race. This is the second week I have tried the Supercars. I started P11, didn't pass anybody, but kept it clean and never got divebombed. Some cars ahead of me made mistakes but a few caught up and passed me again. There was a side-to-side 0x collision while defending a pass at Tamburello but that was it. I was running 10th for the last 3/4 of the race and having an absolute blast. I think some others miscalculated their fuel loads and I ended up in 7th after a very satisfying race.

The contrast to real life is weird. GT3 is a gentlemen's category only followed by the most harcore racing enthusiasts, whereas the Supercars are the bogans and beer version of NASCAR that footy fans can relate to. But where do you find the gentlemen drivers in iRacing? So currently I am only doing the GT3 challenge each week just to get my participation credits for the season, then I will be looking for another series to take part in for my A/B races. I am tempted to get real stuck into IMSA because I am reasonably fast in the Porsche RSR and I love multiclass, but the cleanliness of that series is definitely a big question too.

Alright. Check this out: the last three laps of an attempt at IMSA last night at Daytona. Wow.

Intense doesn't begin to describe racing the LMP2 here, with a full field of GTE and GT3 cars.

To set the scene, I did some practice using the iRacing-supplied Daytona setup. It is a fast setup, but the lack of downforce makes these cars very difficult to drive safely on low-speed corners like the infield here. They are very slippy-slidey and you need a careful throttle to get out of the hairpins. To counter this, I added 1-degree of rear wing and lowered the rear until the aero balance was close to what it was initially. I knew I'd be sacrificing straight-line speed but I figured it's better to be safe than fast, given the obstacles you face on this 45-minute race. This also allowed me to be more aggressive when lapping the GTs, without significantly increasing risk.

At the start I qualified 5th, but the usual happened in turn 1 and I found myself in 2nd for the first few laps. I simply flicked to the high lane to let the faster cars by on the speedway section then slotted in for the slipstream. I was in 5th by the 20-minute mark. Some fortuitous passing opportunities kept me 2 seconds ahead of the car behind, who didn't have the same luck.

I also had no idea how much fuel to add at the pit stop. The yellow car here, #3, was way faster than me. He was leading for a while but had a spin while trying to overtake a GT3. He passed me back a lap prior to the pit stops, so I followed him into the pits and eyeballed it: I unchecked the Add Fuel button when he dropped the jacks and took off out of the pits  Later in the race he had another spin, as did the red/black #20, and I had passed them both to be in 3rd place nearing the end of the race...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cSzBaszTU0&ab_channel=MickJohnson

I held them both off! I don't know why, but the #3 slowed down after the final trip through the bus stop. He did cross onto the grass, but it can't have been a slow-down penalty because he held 250km/h all the way to the finish. The car might have run out of fuel. After this he Alt+F4'd out before even coming to a stop. He was certain to pass me eventually and I was steeling myself for the inevitable break draft/react/pass on that final stretch, but it never came, and I triumphantly ploughed through the cones and skidded to a halt on the T1 exit. I finished the race with only 3x for off-tracks and a heart rate of 240bpm that began at the green didn't let up until five minutes after the race :D

V8 Supercars is usually my most enjoyable series. The quality of the driving is normally good. The problems occur when fast guys are charging up from the back from bad qualifying or a wreck and are bombing their way to the front.

I have done multiple full seasons of GT racing in numerous classes. I even did multiple series in the same season for several seasons in a row, Euro Sprint, VRS GT Sprint and VRS GT Enduro. I even did a full season in the Euro Sprint series in two classes, LMP1 and GTE. When I race GT, I get wrecked in a vast majority of my races. I feel like all the hot-heads drive GT. It is really freakin' aggravating. That is why I gave up on Racing GTE specifically. It was not enjoyable to get wrecked in 75-80% of races, often more than once. I am not exaggerating. I seem to be a magnet for shitty driving.

I will probably run the Euro Sprint at Le Mans this week anyway, just because it's Le Mans. I seem to do well at Daytona, so I may do IMSA Hagerty GTE. I want to get my SR back up, so I may do LMP1 at Le Mans also.

I am in a rut since coming back from vacation. I can't seem to keep the car pointed straight.

I'd be down for some Lotus 49/79 and Kamel GT, but the servers are a deserted wasteland in the hours when I'm likely to be online. Same with a whole host of other categories. ESS was dead last week.

The only way to guarantee a race is to go for the typical popular series and the rookie classes, but that's where most of the problems lie. V8s are great 99% of the time, and if I have a bad race it's usually my own fault :p

Cam
August 18th, 2021, 04:48 AM
The niche series have specific times when drivers jump on the server. Kamel GT, for example, only goes official four sessions a week, Mon. Wed. Fri. evening and Sat. at noon Eastern time. Saturday is the SoF race in KGT. You kind of have to know when drivers show up. Lotus 79 tends to be in the mornings on Sat. and Sun. I am not sure about Lotus 49. I am sure you could find the times on iRacing's forum. There is a Monday session of V8s that has many participants. Our regular Thursday night session usually has good participation, but is often only one split. Normally, about 50% of the field are Aussies. Friday night is better, but I do not race then. It has been my experience that any series that includes GT (VRS GT, IMSA Hagerty, Euro Sprint, etc.) always has lots of participants whenever I am online. The same goes for Porsche Cup. I did a PCup session Monday afternoon and there were over 100 drivers registered, most of them were Europeans. I guess the Aussies are out of sync with the rest of the world. :(

I think half the issue is being on a super speedway, where there is two trains of cars all drafting and the slightest mistake causes half the field to slam into something. It’s a thrill until that happens though! In both races only 9 cars finished.

“Rule number 1 of stock car racing is to learn how to wreck someone without wrecking yourself.”

Sage words from Landon Cassill…

Not sure about the steering. It does have a chunky feel to it on my Fanatec, but I seem to deal with it just fine on Daytona. I’ve been practicing with it at Mosport for next week and it’s definitely not as smooth as a nice comfy GT3 steering rack - my hands are all over the place keeping it under control. Maybe it’s just intrinsically wobbly? Heaps of fun to drive though!

You could try turning your FFB effects up or down and see if that helps at all. Having them higher would probably deliver more feel in the centre but you won’t be able to tell the difference between bumps and bigger bumps because the motor will be maxed out. Turning them down will make all feedback more subtle but you’d have to adapt to a lighter overall feel.

I just had the stupidest Indy Oval race. I was the slowest of the qualifiers. A third of the 25-or-so-car field did not qualify. I just wanted to get my SR up, so I started from the pits. Green flag dropped, but there was immediately a caution before I got off pit road. It told me to let the pace car by and, ultimately, the entire field. Not only was I last, but I was a lap down before my race even started. :erm:

I cycled around by myself for a while. Every lap, I saw smoke hanging in the air, indicating that someone spun or wrecked. I was making up spots every lap. On about lap 20, I got the “Slow car on the right, go left.” from my spotter. I exited turn two and could see the car stopped on the right, so I went left. They moved into my path, completely destroying my car.

When reviewing the replay, they had just exited the pits and wrecked leaving pit lane. They were actually pointed at the wall, but decided to make a U-turn in front of me. :erm:

Retards make it so hard to keep your SR up. :|

I could see this guy in a blue car up the road ahead of me for most of the race. This is the first time I got close to him and I was about to challenge him for 3rd. What did he do? He lost control of his car, of course. I hit the wall trying to avoid him.

I can follow a car on an oval for 20-30 laps and they will run the same line every time. As soon as I try a pass, they change their line and lose control, usually taking me with them.

The car on the right swerved at the car on the left, causing a collision, but only took himself out. Such a bizarre thing to do. :erm: The offending driver got back on track, pursued the car his just hit, then wrecked him hard, nearly taking out several of the leaders. :smh: I protested it and I am sure several others will too. It was during a caution, so everyone saw it. It might make it into a clip video somewhere.

Check out the lap times here, especially the ones after I pitted. I leapfrogged P7 when he pitted and I stayed out for longer, and then maximised the grip of those freshies to keep him behind. Only a lockup by him on the final lap caused us to make contact but he was good enough to let me stay ahead when I spun.

Such a good race, and the antidote to a few bad ones I had in the last two days. IMSA at Laguna is a hard avoid after I racked up 15x before the pit stops - only two of which were off tracks that were my fault, the rest were people hitting me from behind and the side. I did Ferrari fixed and got spun on lap 1. I then had two truck races where I'd qualified at the front. In race 1 my shifter gave me 1st instead of 3rd at the end of the back straight (I recalibrated it and it still does it) and then race 2 I jump started on the green from P2 and got a 26 sec stop-go, still finished P6 though

When did the MX5 become nice to drive?
Thanks to the white ape and his advice, I now own a Trakracer TR8.
Jumped back into Iracing and surprised myself at being pretty near my old pace straight out.
But back to the MX5, I guess they updated the tyre model? It sticks like shit to a blanket now, still can provoke slidey slidey if needed, but it's more fun to drive that what I remember over a year ago.
The Formula Vee is a nightmare, with it's snap oversteer on brakes or off throttle.
I'm happy to be back 😁

Welcome back. Sorry I forgot to accept your friend request :p

I don't bother with the Vee. Can't be arsed.

Is the Vee worse than the SRF?

Cam
September 2nd, 2021, 05:39 AM
I do not think so. It is about the same difficulty to drive.

Did Indy Pro at the ‘Ring yesterday. A dude bombed me from ten car-lengths back and wrecked us both. Then he harassed me for it in text chat. His SR is below 3 and his iR is below 1000.

The SRF is the only racer in the game that I want in real life (realistically) and it pisses me off royally that it's so difficult to drive relative to its real-world counterpart. If I try to drive it anything beyond 8/10ths I'm in the grass.

Yeah, those cars can't be that difficult in real life. A common complaint about iRacing is that you can't catch slides. Pro drivers have said that real cars are more forgiving.

I was talking to an accomplished driver at the track over the weekend and he just refers to it as IceRacing. ;)

I don't know if you saw the latest videos on iRacing's YouTube channel, but it looks like they are attempting to address those complaints.

One big complaint I have is that I’d catch a slide, have the car pointed perfectly straight, and if I have to turn again within a few seconds it’d just continue sliding like it was before. It’s as if the physics state of the rear tyres hadn’t been updated with a new ‘under control’ state.

Good example of this is last two corners of Hockeheim. If you slide too much into the first one, recover, then enter the next one it’ll loop. The tyres can’t have overheated that much surely?

Cam
September 2nd, 2021, 02:31 PM
In iRacing world? Yes. They overheat instantaneously and take several seconds to cool down after a slide.

Cam
September 2nd, 2021, 02:38 PM
You're not far from BMW USA which has some schools/experiences. I've never done them but I've heard they're really fun.
I did not know that existed. That's pretty cool. I briefly looked. Minimum price is about $900 for basics. Race school is significantly more.

So that’s the explanation, that they overheat instantly? That’s crazy. I mean, I’ve done some mean burnouts (on purpose, I am Australian after all) and needed to take care for a few corners afterwards, but turning them almost to jelly after one slide is a bit much I think.

But to look on the bright side, if you spend so much time being ‘trained’ to keep it straight then I’m sure that leads to benefits in real-world racing, or in other sims.

Going into week 13, should be some zany races available. I sometimes enjoy the 13th Week Ridiculousness races. It does not affect your ratings, so it is usually good for a laugh.

I’ve been entering the Pickup Cup at Phoenix. It’s a laugh too. Some people take it seriously, but all I’ve seen are lobbies full of noobs who can’t keep it straight on an oval

And I'm just plodding along, doing practice sessions, time trials and test drives to get my eye back in.
After re signing for VRS, I can see where I'm losing time.....the braking.
The poor logitech pedals don't really cut it, even with spring mods etc.
It seems to be all or nothing, not much in the way of modulation.
I'm eyeing up the VRS pedal set, they seem to have gotten good reviews so far.

That was the first one I entered, still came 2nd. I did the next slot and won it after a backmarker took out the leader. I went to pass the same backmarker some 100m later and he obviously didn't see me, and when we collided he went puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunt off into the grass for about 300 meters

I did another Indy Pro race yesterday before the weekly change. If you can stay clean at the 'Ring, it's an SR farm. Someone hit me for 4x on the pace lap. :erm: Then, I got a netcode with another car in T1 for 4x. On the last lap, I went side-by-side with another car in the final section of the final lap. I was as far on my side of the road as I reasonably could be. They moved over on me and wrecked us both. :smh: I was able to limp over the line and keep the position, but had a total of 12x. They did not take responsibility for the collision, despite it being totally their fault. So many jerks out there. :| Needless to say, I lost a bunch of SR.

I was looking at a serious conundrum there for a sec. I had a refund available for the Porsche 991, the 488 GT3 and a $10 participation credit all sitting in my account, which is almost enough to pay for three things and get a 10% bulk discount.

I wanted the new 992, no brainer, but I'm not suuuper keen on the 488 Evo and I'm not a huge fan of Hungary, but I know I will need them eventually and they're basically free items at this point.

The conundrum parts comes in that I am getting into oval stuff but I'm not serious about it and haven't fully committed to doing full seasons of NASCAR stuff because buying a dozen or more ovals is rather pricey. So do I risk it and look at the draft for Season 4's schedule and chuck a few ovals in there, or do I buy the 3 road items and take the 10% off?

Hmmm....

How did I solve it?

Well I realised that I have bought a lot of content, so I did a count through all of my orders and found that I had 38 pieces. My god. I have spent a LOT of money on iRacing. So I bought the three road items for a $1.17 changeover and got myself into the 40 club

Now I get a flat discount of 20% for everything I buy now and forever, so I don't have to save up three things ever again and can just get what tickles my fancy on a piecemeal basis.

Welp, I was wrong about Hungary. It is fun, if a little bit Mickey Mouse. It has plenty of medium speed 3rd-gear corners if you like those. Getting the line right in a few places is the key.

The PCup 992 is still a challenge, although I think it's more friendly nature will attract more GT3 dicks to the series. It's still a proper PCup though, so the GBR guys will be happy.

And the 488 Evo is way different to the old 488. It's much more understeery on cold tyres so you have to be more gentle on corner entry and exit and spend more time settling it to keep it on line mid-corner (although that could be part of the GT3 tyre update and I haven't tried any other GT3s to compare). Also gone is its incredibly satisfying ability to tighten the line with a slight lift of the throttle and tuck of the nose. Sadface. Very sadface.

The new Cup car seems easier to manage, but the feel of the car is more vague. You can actually catch slides.

The quality of the iDriving is in the toilet at the moment.

My road SR is now below 3, thanks to idiots in Porsche Cup. :smh:

I just attempted a race at Hungaroring. Lap 2, turn 1, I braked in my normal spot and I was going to make the corner. I saw a car coming in hot in my rear-view. He was not even close to making his braking point. I stayed wide to let him zoom by and I turned in. Alas, there was another guy bombing in hot and bashed me in the door, braking my car.

Jumped in feet first to the MX5 racing at Phoenix.
First race, didn't qualify and started dead last, 19th. Ended up 9th with some good luck.
Next one, no qualifying again, 17th to 10th with a few door bangs here and there.
Next round, noticed most of the others were running slower than my times, I decided to qualify.
Cocked up my 2nd lap, but my first was good enough for 2nd place.
Got a good start, no carnage behind, 3rd corner, a left kink, I somehow stuffed that up on cold tyres and spun and damaged the front. Finished 15th.
Next was a disaster, 4th to 14th after being taken out.
Then a great 18th to 5th with 0 incidents. Had a great battle with 5th place when I had caught him. Tried and succeeded in putting him under pressure, but I couldn't capitalise until he made a mistake coming out of the last corner and onto the banking. Beat him
by a nose at the line.

It's really satisfying when things go right.

I’ve been staying away from ranked racing this week because I don’t want to risk a licence demotion

So for me it has been practice sessions only, as well as preparing for Bathurst next weekend, and doing plenty of Identity Crisis rallycross in the dirt Legends, which is hilarious fun.

Rare White Ape
September 10th, 2021, 04:28 PM
On the note of rallycross, Cam do you remember me mentioning that it was very hard in the RX Beetle and you told me to try the Beetle Lite?

Well I finally did that and I still find it stupidly difficult. It’ll grip really well on the tarmac sections but I lose all control on the dirt and it’s nothing like I expect it to be. It’s like racing on oil and the car ont change direction. Every other rally game I have ever played (including the notorious Richard Burns Rally) has more grip on dirt.

However the Dirt Legends cars are very easy and predictable on dirt, almost arcade like. And they don’t have the benefit of 4WD like the RX cars do.

The stadium trucks are a different kettle of fish but they’re really good on dirt ovals in the Sling Mud For Fun races!

Cam

As far as I know, things have already changed to season 4, so you can't get auto-demoted unless your SR goes below 1.

Dirt Road racing is different, for sure. There is a technique that you need to learn. You sort of have to throw the vehicle sideways to get around corners. Watch the fast guys to see what they do. Map a button on your wheel for the handbrake. It can help around the really tight corners. You have to be very judicious with the throttle. Don't spin the wheels too much. I have at least one iRX race and one Pro Truck race on my YT channel you could watch. I'm not saying I'm great, but I am faster than the noobs.

Rare White Ape
September 10th, 2021, 09:24 PM
Hah. I didn't know iRacing had handbrakes. How silly of me.

I'll map it to the 'up' of my sequential shifter and report back later.
