Today I honour a true hero, not only in racing but also in the real world: Robert Benoist, born #OnThisDay 125 years ago. In #WW1 he was a fighter pilot, in #WW2 a leading member of the French Resistance before being captured by the Gestapo. (1/4)

Remembering Pete Lovely, born #OnThisDay ’26. Lovely entered 11 GPs, starting in ’59 & ending in ’71, which may well be (is it?) the lowest total for a driver who drove in 3 #F1 decades (especially as he started only 7 of ’em). Lovely name though. Lovely transporter, too. #RIP

He was a VW dealer. He bought a Lotus 49B in 1969. His best finish was his first, the 1969 race of champions where he qualified and ran 8 seconds off the pace. Today, that wouldn't have met the 107% rule. However, it is certain he must have had a lot of fun doing it!

Wattie never won a GP for Brabham but he came close, never closer than at Dijon in '77 (pic), an 80-lap GP which he led from lap 5 to lap 79, only to lose out to Mario Andretti (Lotus) as his Brabham's Alfa flat-12 faltered momentarily, gulping the last few drops of fuel. (3/4)

Monaco marked the final GP for the Simtek team, with neither Jos Verstappen or Domenico Schiattarella completing a racing lap. With large debts and a lack of sponsorship money, Simtek went into voluntary liquidation. Monaco GP, Monte Carlo, 28th May 1995. #F1

Remembering Luigi Fagioli, who died #OnThisDay in '52, at 54. Astonishingly, he'd won a GP the previous year (at Reims in an Alfa), at 53. Very successful pre-WW2, he was an old(ish) man by the time #F1 was invented, yet he still achieved an 85.71% F1 podium strike rate. (1/2)
