A very fond #DavesCarIDService farewell to the fastest hot rodder of all time, Craig Breedlove, who died April 4 at age 87. 1st human to surpass 400, 500, & 600 mph at Bonneville. His training wheels: this 1934 Ford 3w coupe, purchased at age 13 for $75. Godspeed to the GOAT.

*not $75 as in the picture, started as a junkyard coupe that he hopped up with skills from shop class and a Santa Monica speed shop job, to race at SoCal drags and dry lakes. By 23 he built another '34 that hit 149 mph at dusty El Mirage.

Of course, he is best known for his Spirit of America, the car that would take him over 400 & 500 mph and inspire the Beach Boys song. Properly understood, a hot rod as well: a $500 Korean War surplus GE J47 jet engine for power, built in Dad's driveway with help from buddies.

His 600 mph record came in his subsequent Spirit of America-Sonic I car. The 500 mph world record involved one of the scariest rides of all time: chutes & brakes failed, and he coasted 5 miles until hitting a telephone pole and sinking into a salt pond.
