It's stupid no matter who the president is, if there are still 9 months before the election. If the election had already past, and we were waiting for the new president to be sworn in... then I could see it being a concern.

I think he was specifically saying it's weird to assume heart-attack specifically, instead of just natural causes.

Why this millennial switched to the GOP (http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/politics/269282-why-this-millennial-switched-to-the-gop)
I don't understand some peoples line of thinking... :| I had an idea going into this article that it was going to be a bunch of BS, and that's just what I got.

The millennial generation is by far the entrepreneurial generation. Hundreds of incredible new businesses are started by illennials each year. Many fail, many succeed, and some become multi-billion dollar public companies. millennials love technology and experimentation. And therefore it shouldn’t be too hard to see why millennials are apprehensive about government intrusions into the market that have greatly slowed down services that they themselves have used to great benefit like Airbnb and Uber. Which would be completely hindered if the GOP let's internet providers throttle service. :|

Just because millennials have a different relationship with religion doesn’t mean they have abandoned faith. And as millennials make it through life’s challenges, I think our generation will turn back to religion more strongly once again. And the Republican Party remains the party of religious liberty. I believe millennials will eventually come to see that.except that religious liberty is just a scapegoat for allowing discrimination.

But then there are those that claim that the Republican Party has far too much of a “take it or leave it” attitude towards this platform. I would argue that this is in fact the attitude of the Democratic Party. We see and hear how on campuses across the country leftists try to silence opposing views. I don’t think this is something the overwhelming majority of our generation believes in. As demonstrated by the fierce competition with the Republican presidential race right now, the Republican Party embraces open debate and discussion in a way that I think my generation will find more and more appealing. :? What??? I don't see how anyone could watch each of the last two debates and draw that comparison.

thesameguy
February 16th, 2016, 11:56 AM
The hilarity of that article is... hilarious. Millennials an entrepreneurial generation? LMAO. You don't get stereotypes like "lazy" and "entitled" when you're a bunch of against-all-odds go-getter types. Of course the fact that you'd say such a thing when it's demonstrably untrue fits right in, so.... As for calling a bunch of developmentally disabled children yelling and pulling each other's hair "debating," well, I guess political correctness has infiltrated just about everything.

Kchrpm
February 16th, 2016, 01:00 PM
Eh, the idea of millenials as all lazy and entitled ignores all of the ones who are starting/running startups, or making major contributions to new technologies/platforms/companies/etc. The idea that any group so big and generically grouped (born after a certain year? YOU'RE ALL ALIKE!!!!!!) would all have major personality characteristics in common is silly, anyway. You can likely find examples of whatever you want, nowadays, thanks to social media.

And who is more likely to show up on your radar when checking social media? People living their lives normally, or someone who has nothing to do all day as they suck off the teet of their parents/the government/whoever else?

You're right. But I'm just saying this based solely on Bernie's response regarding how he'll help ease race relations. His response was raising minimum wage!

Anyway, like I said, Obama surely understands this nations struggles regarding race relations, but even he wasn't able to do much to ease such tensions.

So in the end I guess it doesn't really matter much whether if a sitting president understands America's racial problems or not. One person just cannot fix it.

The media is misleading the public on Syria

COVERAGE OF the Syrian war will be remembered as one of the most shameful episodes in the history of the American press. Reporting about carnage in the ancient city of Aleppo is the latest reason why.

For three years, violent militants have run Aleppo. Their rule began with a wave of repression. They posted notices warning residents: “Don’t send your children to school. If you do, we will get the backpack and you will get the coffin.” Then they destroyed factories, hoping that unemployed workers would have no recourse other than to become fighters. They trucked looted machinery to Turkey and sold it.

This month, people in Aleppo have finally seen glimmers of hope. The Syrian army and its allies have been pushing militants out of the city. Last week they reclaimed the main power plant. Regular electricity may soon be restored. The militants’ hold on the city could be ending.

Militants, true to form, are wreaking havoc as they are pushed out of the city by Russian and Syrian Army forces. “Turkish-Saudi backed ‘moderate rebels’ showered the residential neighborhoods of Aleppo with unguided rockets and gas jars,” one Aleppo resident wrote on social media. The Beirut-based analyst Marwa Osma asked, “The Syrian Arab Army, which is led by President Bashar Assad, is the only force on the ground, along with their allies, who are fighting ISIS — so you want to weaken the only system that is fighting ISIS?”

This does not fit with Washington’s narrative. As a result, much of the American press is reporting the opposite of what is actually happening. Many news reports suggest that Aleppo has been a “liberated zone” for three years but is now being pulled back into misery.

You're 100% correct, I typed 'big money,' then sat and thought about it for a few minutes, realised it wasn't what i meant to say and replaced it with 'party leadership' without actually deleting it. Most of what I said still holds though - he was running like a high school junior trying to get the class secretary position to pad his extracurriculars on a college application. And from what I've heard, most of the traditional party leadership/$$$ (think the Koch brothers) are either supporting Cruz or Rubio, or are avoiding commitment until the field firms up some more.

You're definitely on the nose with him being 'THE' establishment guy on the gop side, but the specifics of that are pretty weird this cycle. Hopefully I'll remember to come back to this in the morning, because i've got some thoughts on what that means.

Yes, it's amazing how the mind creates the impression that the Republican Party used to be better.

Slight edit to that list - "I allowed a scientist to travel to Pakistan and give them nuclear weapons, whilst I was creating Al-Quaeda, and printing huge amounts of children's textbooks to promote what we now call 'Radical Islam'."

"I covertly sold arms to Iran during the Iran-Iraq War and used the proceeds to fund terrorists in Nicaragua."

TBH everything I've read about the caucuses (and I'm paying way more attention to the US presidential race than I have in previous years thanks to this very thread) makes me think the whole thing is a disorganised mess of people sitting down in different parts of the room and whoever can shout loudest gets to speak. I know it's been like this for many, many years but you'd think they'd have some sort of order of counted vote or SOMETHING rather than the totalfuckupinwaiting it currently is. The whole Las Vegas thing with the messed up vote and people leaving before a candidate was nominated (and the writing on his hand!) and the scenario above with the people being asked to leave and blatant racism of the person who's supposed to be in charge makes me cringe.

Gov Walker is just destroying people's rights in Wisconsin. :(

People who make money collecting debts in Wisconsin are about to get a big favor from their government. A law sitting on Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) desk this week would make it much easier and much less risky for debt collectors to go after consumers in court, and much harder to prove that any given collection effort is bogus. The same idea was defeated in 2014 after state officials testified it would harm consumers. The state didn’t raise those same warnings in a September hearing on the nearly-identical 2015 version of the bill, however. It passed both Republican-dominated chambers of the state legislature on party-line...

http://latesttopnews.com/2016/02/26/no-dad-no-money-illinois-gop-bill-proposes-cutting-aid-to-single-mothers-including-rape-victims/

No dad, no money: Illinois GOP bill proposes cutting aid to single mothers, including rape victims

A new bill proposed by Illinois Republicans would strip single mothers and their children of financial aid. The draft law makes no excuse for rape victims who decide not to abort, but excludes in vitro mothers.

Currently in committee, the bill proposed by two GOP members, John Cavaletto and Keith Wheeler, would deny newborns birth certificates if their mothers will not or cannot provide the name of a biological father.

“Absent DNA evidence or a family member’s name, a birth certificate will not be issued and the mother will be ineligible for financial aid from the State for support of the child,” the bill reads.

The bill would also take away the state’s financial support for a child born to a single mother if she fails to provide the name of the biological father or bring DNA test results identifying him within 30 days.

The draft law says that “a family that does not comply with the Vital Records Act provision concerning birth certificates of unmarried mothers shall be ineligible for aid for support of the child.”

If passed into law, amendments would have to be attached to the current law that does not require paternity records.

The Vital Act stipulates that if “the mother was not married to the father of the child at either the time of conception or the time of birth, the name of the father shall be entered on the child’s birth certificate only if the mother and the person to be named as the father have signed an acknowledgment of parentage in accordance with subsection.”

Despite the anti-abortion stance generally taken by Republicans, the bill reportedly makes no exception for victims of rape or incest. Yet, at the same time, the new requirements would not apply to “artificially inseminated mothers.”

My television station had a murderer on air last week — a self-confessed one. Ivan Bubenchik was calm and collected, his demeanor was open, and he spoke confidently of his actions on February 20, 2014, like he had known exactly what he was doing. After all, he was on the good side of the Euromaidan revolution, which was raging in Ukraine at the time, and which eventually swept a corrupt president out of power.

In telling Bubenchik’s story, we were breaking a taboo — it was the police, the popular narrative goes, that were the murderers. The protesters were heroes. But Bubenchik’s words were chilling. “To create a word of mouth effect, you have to shoot two or three [police] commanders,” he said to the camera. “I only picked two. And after that, there was no need to kill anyone else, so I aimed at the legs.”

Award-winning Iran-Contra journalist Robert Parry has been told by a source close to Vladimir Putin that Russia has threatened Turkey with the use of tactical nuclear weapons if it launches a joint invasion of Syria with Saudi Arabia.

Earlier this month, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told CNN that President Bashar al-Assad will have to be removed “by force” if the political process fails.

Despite official denials that the kingdom possesses nuclear weapons, Saudi political analyst told RT’s Arabic network last week that the Saudis have indeed obtained the bomb and that tests will be conducted soon.

I don't know, Obama's foreign policy has been diabolical. Sure he didn't create the problem of Iraq and Afghanistan and saw them as a mistake, but when you put the oven on by mistake, what you don't do is walk away and leave it. Aside from that, his policies in Libya and Syria following withdrawal from Iraq are directly responsible for the creation of ISIS and the destabilisation of an entire region, which is a problem that hasn't even finished getting worse yet. And Syria is definitely a fire that he's continued pouring gas on throughout his second term, even supplying TOW missiles via Saudi Arabia and training that eventually found their way to terrorist factions including ISIS. He's also provided support for terrorists more directly via Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. The golden image I had of him in his first term has certainly decayed. He descended to a very 1980s style of, "we'll support terrorists if it serves our political interests." Except arguably such a mentality is even more inexcusable now, because there is no huge Soviet bogeyman at large, he's just riding rough-shot over sound judgement.

I want him to win as much as anyone. I'm going to vote for him in the primary. But he's not going to win. The country as a whole isn't ready to elect someone like him. Here's the other funny thing... I don't know if he's still saying this, but I remember early on when Bernie was campaigning, he specifically said that even if he was elected president, he was not going to be able to bring about the change that really needs to happen.

So why exactly are we sitting around bellyaching about the fact that our savior Bernie is not going to get elected? As he said originally, the only way things will truly change is if a large chunk of the population gets fed up enough to protest the fact that our country is controlled by an elite group of wealthy people. But that's not going to happen. Clinton will get elected, and we'll silently stew away about the fact that our president is controlled by big banks. But even if Bernie did get elected, all we would do is look to him to bring about the change we need, which he already accurately confirmed he was not powerful enough to do on his own, even if he was president.

This seems insightful:

Several factors combined to produce Trump.

1. The GOP outsourced its communication strategy to Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and the like. Those people and corporations are in the business of selling fear. For 20 years, they've been telling people that the only reasonable response to any event is fear -- fear of terrorism, of moderate Democrats like Obama, of losing their guns, of black people, of economic calamity, of homosexuals, of the rise of other countries, of disease, of Obamacare, etc. They've created an entire fear-based culture. Reagan, for all his many faults, was a sunny, optimistic fellow who told us it was morning in America. Now the message of the GOP (crafted by Fox/Limbaugh/Beck) is that America is a shithole where you are in terrible peril. So along comes Trump who cynically exploits those fears, fashions himself as a classic authoritarian strongman who promises to keep everyone safe by being "tough."

2. The GOP allowed itself to become, in Bobby Jindal's apt phrase, the party of stupid. It denied evolution. It denied global warming. It denied geology. It denied the need for any education beyond what might be needed to get a job. It kept returning to the theory that tax cuts would produce a booming economy, despite the fact that there was no evidence that that was so. (Kansas, anyone?) It denied the importance of facts themselves. Some Republicans even denied Enlightenment principles of scientific inquiry and discourse and embraced theocracy. And there was no intellectual enforcer like a Buckley who was willing or able to call out such stupidity. Stupid people are easy for carnival barkers like Trump to manipulate.

3. The GOP was infiltrated by and is now heavily dependent on religious literalists. As Barry Goldwater pointed out years ago, those people are impossible to work with in a democratic government because they refuse to compromise. If you are acting in accordance with God's law, then even the smallest deviation from that (i.e., the compromises democracy relies on for its very survival) becomes heresy. Though Trump is far from religious, he promises no-compromise tactics in defeating ISIS, in keeping Americans "safe."

4. The GOP became the party of the Lost Cause, the party of the south. Though it drives some of my Republican friends crazy to hear this said, the party went out of its way to embrace bigoted voters. And the party encouraged their racism, especially when Obama won the presidency. But for years, Republicans thought they had to couch their racism in dog whistles and cutesy allusions. Now comes Trump who proudly disdains polite speech and openly expresses his bigotry. And the reaction is delight and relief: finally, we can say what we really think and express our prejudices -- by voting for a man who does just that.

5. The GOP adopted Leninist tactics. "No enemies to the right" became its electoral message. No matter how kooky, antidemocratic, or reactionary you were, the GOP was willing to embrace you. And so unsurprisingly, the party moved right. Far, far right. Fear of being called a RINO drove party members to extreme positions. And at the extreme end of every ideology is authoritarianism (which is true of both left and right). Today the party bears almost no resemblance to the one my parents supported. So along comes Trump, whose ideology (to the extent he has one) isn't conservative, but is authoritarian. His very campaign slogan is revanchist: Make America great again. While his policies are not in line with past GOP policies, his tone and his authoritarian style are the inevitable result of the Republican's embrace of more and more extreme ideas.

6. Trump is a celebrity. He's best known as a reality TV personality, not a politician. We live in a culture that glorifies celebrities, but for years few celebrities have identified as Republicans. The entertainment industry is overwhelmingly moderate to liberal. For years, Republicans had to make do with C-list celebrity endorsements (Ted Nugent?). Suddenly, here comes an A-list guy and the Republican faithful are delighted. Finally, a celebrity who isn't a Democrat!

There are many other factors, of course. But these, I think, are a good starting point. As a liberal, I cop to feeling some schadenfreude at seeing the GOP in a Trumpian dilemma. But as an American, I am dismayed. Our democracy needs a principled, intellectually coherent, forward-looking conservative party. It doesn't have one now. And that's dangerous."

Michael Hayden (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/02/28/former-cia-director-military-may-refuse-to-follow-trumps-orders-if-he-becomes-president/) said that they would follow any directive he gave them to kill terrorists families, or anything else that violated international law.

During his appearance on “Real Time,” Hayden cited Trump’s pledge to kill family members as being among his most troubling campaign statements.
“That never even occurred to you, right?” Maher asked.
“God, no!” Hayden replied. “Let me give you a punchline: If he were to order that once in government, the American armed forces would refuse to act.”
“That’s quite a statement, sir,” Maher said.
“You are required not to follow an unlawful order,” Hayden added. “That would be in violation of all the international laws of armed conflict.”

Yes, a Trump presidency may cause other hostile nations to burn down faster. In fact, invading another nation stealthily and utilize the Seals to kidnap/kill somebody who's the enemy of the US and then dump his body in the middle of the ocean is something I fully expect somebody like Trump would do. I dunno, maybe Trump would just nuke Pakistan upon realizing they are harboring somebody we don't like?

I guess, the only possible way we can indirectly get burned down is by Trump launching nukular missiles to other nuclear powers.

Anyway, I failed to see how commander-in-chief can utilize the military to burn ourselves down.

It was pretty pathetic when we were bullying Iraq and Vietnam thinking that we can easily kick their asses... and then we fucked ourselves over.

Anyway, just frustrated with the status quo. Just not voting for Hillary.

Either Sanders... or Trump! So I hope the democrats nominate wisely.

*sigh* You don't get it. WE WOULD BE THE BULLY IN THE SITUATION. BECAUSE TRUMP IS A BULLY! He would go in to some situation, say or do something stupid, and/or try to use/show US force, and then the response from that is an attack on US soil.

I can't imagine why Christie decided to endorse Trump, unless maybe if he's looking for the V.P. position.

No matter how big you are you need trade and investment in your currency, the worry is that Trump would alienate too many people in those respects.

I think the fear is someone as clueless as trump with his finger on the red button.

In all honesty I'd be surprised if the interlocks involve just one idiot. In 1962 a Soviet submarine was ordered to fire a nuclear-tipped torpedo. The commander had a drink of Vodka instead.
