The only good thing about Trump, is that he's done what he's done (referring to the above, laying out, in the open, all that's wrong with the party and more scarily, the people...). He says shit to get a reaction, and get a reaction he does. Rubio tried to follow suit, and threw in the towel within an hour of getting his ass handed to him in his state. now Cruz is "trying" (and failing, nobody can out Trump Trump, this is his wheelhouse).

Whenever Cruz is on TV and opens his face, I hit mute or change the channel. When Trump's on, we watch and laugh. We're in NO WAY a Trump supporter (I think the whole premise is appalling), but it's entertaining in any case.

I'm being completely honest in asking this. you need a photo id for so many things in the US already. alcohol, tobacco, using a credit card in some places. why is it bad to need one to vote?

Because alcohol, tobacco, and credit cards aren't guaranteed rights and aren't a basic part of citizenship. You could live your entire life and never want a drink, but that should not prevent you from having a say in the system that governs you. Unlike smoking, an elected government is the very foundation of a democracy.

That said, I am not inherently opposed to mandatory issued IDs, but you can't suddenly require someone to have an ID to participate in a basic function of citizenship. There needs to be a fair and reasonable phase-in, time allowed for people to obtain the IDs you will require before they are actually required.

Its a combination of several factors - One, like tsg said, is that its a fundamental right and the thinking is that an individual should have to jump through any hoops in order to exercise it.

Another is that a variety of studies have shown that minorities and especially the poor are less likely to have a valid ID for a variety of reasons, including drivers license suspensions, and simply not owning a car.
Although the states requiring voter ID mostly have free gov't ID programs - these are often not really free, and are often made difficult to get for some people. Usually, to get an ID you need supporting documentation (maybe a birth certificate, etc.) the poor, minorities, and especially the elderly are less likely to have these on hand and there are usually fees to get them. As far as difficult to get, there are a variety of examples of the correct offices being open limited hours, or in remote locations, etc. - Like the one in Wisconsin that recently made the news for being open only on the 5th Wednesday of the month, or 4/5 days a year. See this study by the Brennan Center for further information (http://www.brennancenter.org/publication/challenge-obtaining-voter-identification).
And lastly - Although these laws are put in place to ostensibly reduce voter fraud, there has been basically no evidence of large scale individual voter fraud occurring - Kris Kobach, the Kansas Secretary of State who is largely responsible for a variety of citizenship requirements for voter ID across the nation has managed to catch and attempt prosecution of a total of 3 people (http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2015/10/30/3717823/voter-fraud-cases-kansas/). None of whom committed the crime with any kind of ill-intent - They're people who live in more than one state and voted in multiple local elections thinking it was not illegal.

Voter ID laws are also often very limited in the IDs they accept. A while back i posted an article about a guy in his 90s who fought at Iwo Jima who could not vote because his only ID was a Veterans Administration card, which is accepted for most other ID purposes.

It's interesting that there's no real hubub here in Canada over Voter ID. Ours requires:

a) one form of government photo ID
b) or two pieces of non-photo ID like a birth certificate or even a bank statement or bill with your address on it

or c) someone with said ID to vouch for you and swear an oath.

I've never heard of any controversy over this at all, though, minority or otherwise. Pretty much everyone in the country has SOME kind of ID. Natives, who are the major oppressed minority here, have their Native ID card with their picture on it, even.

I saw Michael Ian Black of all people talking about this. From what I gathered, the idea is that we expect more from our own country, so punishment makes sense. We don't expect more from a country like Saudi Arabia, and that continued exposure to the western world is more likely to bring about the change we'd like to see. It makes sense in one way, but when I think about Michael Moore pulling his movie from NC, it seems backwards. If he thinks he makes movies that will change people's minds, then he should actively campaign to have that be shown everywhere in NC, not pull it from the state.

It reminds me of the one thing that I think bugs me more than anything else about Hillary Clinton. Her argument against free college is that she doesn't want to pay for Trump's children go to go college. It's such an insanely stupid argument. If anything, I'd want his kids to go to public colleges where they can learn from sources other than their idiot father. It's the literal definition of cutting your nose off to spite your face.

It's called political relatively. It also depends whether the foreign country is an adversary. E.g. take gay protests at the Winter Olympics in Russia vs Qatar winning the World Cup bid. In Russia homosexuality is legal but promotion of homosexuality to children isn't, in Qatar homosexuals get executed but nobody seems to care because they're anti-Iran and therefore an ally.

Looking at higher education in the UK, I think entrance requirements should be increased so that only have as many people get in (as per mid-90s and before), then they can all go for free and it will still cost the taxpayer less. I'm not really thrilled about "Free College" either, and I'm pretty liberal and overall for Bernie. University obviously needs to have affordable options. Maybe AA schools (Community Colleges, etc.) can be free, but the middle ground between them and expensive private universities (which Bernie won't change AFAIK) needs to be affordable state universities. These are also the schools that usually bring in Millions (if not Billions) in revenue through sports. More and more each year, and yet tuitions keep going up. Going to UF like I did, or FSU, or OSU, etc. etc. shouldn't cost more than a couple grand a semester. They also shouldn't be spending 7 Million on their football coaches or 100 million on sports facilities.
