Once should be enough..., but it should be produced at candidate level.

Voters shouldn't have to ask or petition or question anybody for these basic things after the fact.

They were asked for, repeatedly, during Trump's election.

All these political BS are all results of lack of proper rules or laws or lack of enforcement. IRS should just release all presidents returns under freedom of information act, but I suppose then again president could still manage to go around that...

If Obama can ignore freedom of information act what's the big deal about trump hiding his personal tax returns?

That's not how the Freedom of Information Act works, eactually, and no one used the Freedom of Information act to ask for Obama's birth certificate. I'd also point out that not all information is accessible under the Freedom of Information Act.

anyway, it'll be hard to twist a president's arm to make him to what we want him to do, but it should be easy to make IRS publicize tax returns of public servants..., or at least have the power to kick them out of offices should something looks fishy.

That's like saying it'd be easy for your doctor to just publish your medical records. Which is not something they can legally do, even with a Freedom of Information Act request.

Hey, isn't that neat. Right after the EPA are told they aren't allowed to address the public anymore, the AP reports that Michigan's environmental agency report that Flint's water no longer has lead levels exceeding federal limit. The organization that can confirm or deny that is now not allowed to do that.

EDIT: Even better, they can't say whether the administration changed what the federal levels are - they may have just increased the federal limit to above what's in Flint's water.

Obama is factually the least transparent prez ever so far. That is not alternate reality but a reality most of you don't seem to care.

Now, trumps unwillingness to even produce his tax returns is probably indicative of how he will dethrone Obama in that area.

Now, with regard to locking down public/tax funded research results, how the hell is that possible?

You realize Freedom of Information Act requests are people filing formal requests asking for specific documents, right? They're not the only method of "transparency" in government. They also would not include documents that are already handed out by the government without a request.

Not saying he's the most transparent President ever, but your statement doesn't exactly match up with your source.

If an admin is really that transparent, there'd be no need to request any more information.

You can pick fault at my statement, but fact, reality is that Obama admin is the worst since 1966 at denying, delaying information requests under such act.

But that's ok, because democrats know what they're doing, only republicans are evil morons living in their own realities.

I did not correct my statement, i just said that you could find fault with my statement if you want, but I still think Obama admin had been the least transparent since 1966 and I have the facts to back that up based on foia records. If you guys have any better way to objectively measure transparency, I'm all ears.

I've also been blaming people on both sides since the beginning of magnifying faults of other side and minimizing faults on there own side and thus each living in their own realities.

Anyway, Obama is over and done with, hopefully Trump won't dethrone him when it comes to these foia requests.

Billi doesn't follow a singular train of thought. He lives his life based on beliefs. Whether factual or not (usually not). And he changes from moment to moment, based on what he currently feels. There is no point in trying to have an actual conversation with him, because his beliefs will change (and therefore what he claims to be important) based on the changing conversation, often leading to him to disagree with even his own previous position.

Tom Servo
January 25th, 2017, 06:51 AM
By definition, if you're judging transparency solely on a metric that didn't even exist until 1966, you can't say that he was *factually* the least transparent president ever. At best, you'll only cover the last 9 of them, including the one that's been in office for all of six days.

I haven't studied the history of the FOIA, but I'd hazard a guess it was created in response to a lack of transparency as it seems superfluous if we governmental transparency wasn't an issue. If that's the case, that would lead me to believe that some of the first 36 presidents may well have been even less transparent.

I've said before and I'll say again, I have my problems with Obama's claims of transparency vs. his actions, and I don't necessarily think Clinton would be any better. I do think Trump has already, in 5 days, shown himself to be far worse. You'll notice, however, the part that is in dispute is the claim that he's factually the least transparent ever, and that part is unequivocally wrong. If you'd said "he was factually the president that blocked the most FOIA requests", then there wouldn't be a dispute.

I think Billi is right in this situation. He said the Obama administration was the least transparent, we asked for justification of that statement, and he provided it via a reliable source. Though the sheer number of requests likely makes it tougher to keep up than it was before current times, there were still issues like this:

In nearly 1 in 3 cases, when someone challenged under appeal the administration’s initial decision to censor or withhold files, the government reconsidered and acknowledged it was at least partly wrong. That was the highest reversal rate in at least five years.
-----------------
The new figures showed the government responded to 647,142 requests, a 4 percent decrease over the previous year. It more than ever censored materials it turned over or fully denied access to them, in 250,581 cases or 39 percent of all requests. Sometimes, the government censored only a few words or an employee’s phone number, but other times it completely marked out nearly every paragraph on pages.

Does that mean Obama's presidency was failed or anything similar? No. Does it mean Donald Trump won't be worse? No. But it does mean there is at least some justification to the statement that the Obama administration was on the low end of transparency when compared to all others since the passing of the Freedom of Information Act.

Personally, if I were Billi, I would have followed it up with "I should clarify. He's factually the president who has blocked/censored both the highest number of FOIA requests and the highest percentage of overall requests." and then be done with it. Clarify the previously impossible to prove statement. Don't immediately go into a tirade about how people think it isn't important or live in an alternate reality or believe that it's okay if a democratic president does it, because all of that isn't true if you're talking about my thoughts on it.

The359

Billi, the documents requested under FOIA, aren't necessarily ones that were created under Obama's administration. They are requests for anything on record, most of the time to declassify information long after its use. So poorly responding to FOIA requests does not mean that his government was not transparent in their actions.

Is it really that unreasonable to say that an admin blocking the most foia requests as the least transparent? That is pretty much the only metric we can use and main purpose for foia was to make govt more transparent, no? Further, do we really need to compare transparency of modern presidents to George Washington? The only part I needed to clarify was Obama was the worst we've ever measured so far since 1966!

So let me try again to see if I can make it better:

Obama admin was the least transparent admin EVER based on percentage of foia requests blocked.

Is that something you guys can agree with?

Anyway, whether you guys agree or not, that really came to me as a huge surprise and disappointment. That was certainly not one of the campaign promises.

To be fair to Obama, I wonder if this poor record was mostly due to Hillarys email fiasco.

Anyway, main problem with politics right now is that each side uses different rulers to measure folks of different parties. Each side knows their guy isn't perfect but willingly over look their problems while magnifying the problems of opposing side.

Had Obama/Hillary been more transparent, there'd be no need for Russians/wikileak/fbi to mess with elections.

But my gut feeling is that Hillary had something to hide... Likewise trump has something to hide with his returns.

As much as I dislike them both, I do believe america is great enough to at least survive either one of them. Who knows, maybe with a more unified government under republican leadership, maybe they will actually end up making America great again just because of less bickering and grid lock..., if not, then I hope Democratic Party won't screw it up again after frustrated voters give power back to them in 2020.

Sigh...

"We'll be having some really good, really solid plans within a short period of time."

"And I've seen crowds before. Big, big crowds. That was some crowd. When I looked at the numbers that happened to come in from all of the various sources, we had the biggest audience in the history of inaugural speeches. I said the men and women that I was talking to who came out and voted will never be forgotten again. Therefore I won't allow you or other people like you to demean that crowd and to demean the people that came to Washington, D.C., from faraway places because they like me. But more importantly they like what I'm saying."

I honestly don't see him remaining King that long.

They're (GOP) is likely letting him run his freak show to distract everybody while they do the shit they've always wanted to do. Then when they have that done, it's time to promote Pence.

That's my theory anyway. But we're in an "Alternative Fact" era, so who the fuck knows.

There's no fucking way he's going to go the full 4 years. He'll either have been impeached (or worse), and/or irreparably damaged foreign relations to the point, that they don't want to talk to us, regardless of who's in charge.

Or, the world is the setting of Fallout 4.

At this point, I would gladly take Mike Pence, as much as it pains me to say that. He, at least, had some semblance of knowledge and diplomacy. It's a shit sandwich anyway you look at it. If Pence is promoted, the same shitty laws/reversals will happen for us. But at least with him, I don't think we have to worry (my biggest worry, in fact) about him fucking off allies/etc, and making the global stage a complete shit show. That's OUR center ring now.

Trump has already appointed his circus freaks to cabinet positions though. Putting Pence in place won't help if they're all hell-bent on destroying the institutions that they are in charge of. :/

Right, that was my point.

That part, we're just fucked. But it's just "us". It's the damage to global diplomacy/relations, etc, that scares the fuck out of me.

If DJT was outted, you can bet his stupid fucking wall thing would go with him. The TPP thing will just fuck us with a trade war. Those two things, so far anyway, are our only international "impact". In which both are easily reversed if/when he's impeached.

Americans survived overseas holidays with Bush as President, you'll survive Trump as well. This may come as a shock but people around the world are well aware that only a very small percentage of Americans actually voted for Trump and unless you're wandering about with a Make America Great Again hat you're far far more likely to get pity than abuse.

The Great Wall of China was built but without a happy ending. Wonder if Trump can do better than the ruthless emperor Chin.

Trump is a master manipulator of people's feelings. That's how he won. I suspect this is all just talk because neither US nor Mexico can afford this Great Wall of America... If he does push this thru, then we can expect results such as his universities except 1000x worse... And thousands of years later, maybe it'll also be a great tourist destination...

The closest I ever got was to a woman (in the bloody check-in queue at Heathrow) who, upon hearing I live in HK, started talking about how she refused to buy Chinese-made goods because of sweatshops etc. and she would only buy American. So in 1 week in Trump's Administration:

Blocked several Government agencies from reporting ANYTHING to do with Climate Change
Banned aid to countries that even mention the word Abortion in healthcare
Set plans to build a wall but not how to pay for it
Convinced the Doomsday Clock volunteers to move the theoretical doomsday closer than it's been since 1953
Forced the biggest protests in history, spanning all 7 continents
Had the chief strategist tell the media in general to shut the hell up
Had Trump's aides tell lies constantly and labeled them as "alternative facts"
Had all of the major staff in the State Department leave/resign/get fired abruptly yesterday....some with 40 years of experience in international issues
Will be posting crime statistics committed specifically by immigrants on a weekly basis
Threatened to bring federal troops to Chicago after seeing a TV opinion broadcast
Uses an un-secured Android phone and twitter for international "diplomacy"

at what point do we not call this Fascism?

Not that I want to support Trump in any way but every Republican President since and including Reagan has written an Executive Order to withdraw from the Mexico City Policy on Jan 22nd, after they take office. The Muslim ban is bad in many ways, but the way it's been applied is probably the worst aspect.

People who had all their documents in order, jumped through all the hoops, were on a plane in mid-air when Trump made them illegal with a stroke of a pen, arrived to be detained in immigration. Some of them have lives, jobs, families in the US and were returning from work or holiday travel.

Trump didn't take any advice, didn't consider the consequences for people's lives, just acted impulsively on gut instinct. This doesn't bode well for when he turns his attention to healthcare.

I work in IT, people come from all over, we don't care as long as they are smart and work well with others. We have an office in London and one in New York. People travel all the time for meetings, getting face time together is important when trying to collaborate and empathise with people in another time zone.

At least one of my colleagues here in London is now banned from our NY office. Given the sudden, arbitrary way this has been done, it's hard for many others to feel confident in getting on a plane.

And we're a minnow compared to the big IT companies.

This is not good for business.

(I mean, it's not good in many ways, but being business friendly was meant to be Trump's strong point)

Just fwiw, Trump has never looked good for business, in fact he's the exact opposite of what business want from government. I think this was known pretty well before the election and once he got in the hope was that he'd settle down which sadly has proven not to happen. Once Trump got voted in we postponed our plans to set up an office in Philly and instead are opening an office in Mexico. Between changing rules on the fly, not thinking things even slightly through and taking delight in threatening large companies in a manner fitting of a street thug he's going to drive the US into recession as business battens the hatches and decides to simply wait the next 4 years out.

They're definitely only counting on American soil for the Libya number to be zero instead of at least 189 (Pan Am Flight 103, anyone?).

I disagree. The ban doesn't affect anything happening outside the US so I'm not sure why you'd include it. If you're trying to pick the countries to stop coming to the US then it makes sense to focus on the things done by those people in the US.

TheBenior
January 29th, 2017, 02:56 PM
If the list specifically said, "on American soil," it would be correct. Since they didn't, it is not correct.

Sir Mo Farah was caught up in it but they're reporting that he's been told he can return to his family in Portland now. Google had around 100 employees affected and some are believed to be out of the country, lots of tech firms will be in the same position. One was meant to be flying to the US tomorrow for business. "You have to watch out because people will be asking you to do things and you need to say no. You think the attorney general has the responsibility to say no to the President if he asks for something that's improper?" Sessions asks Yates.
"A lot of people have defended the Lynch nomination, for example by saying, 'Well, he appoints somebody who's going to execute his views, what's wrong with that?' " the GOP senator from Alabama asks, referring to Obama's 2014 nomination of Loretta Lynch as attorney general.
"But if the views the President wants to execute are unlawful, should the attorney general or the deputy attorney general say no?"
Yates replies: "Senator, I believe the attorney general or the deputy attorney general has an obligation to follow the law and the Constitution and to give their independent legal advice to the President."

I agree for the most part...then again, what it has done is to mobilize liberals, progressives and reasonable people to actually DO SOMETHING for once instead of be lazy and apathetic (generally speaking).

So instead of having a very slow road to the end of the dream of America, we're getting a massive shock to the system and a wake-up call. In the end, it may be a good thing....the whole hitting rock bottom before we can wake up and actually fight back.

What can be done? Enough of protests may convince the GOP to do something, OR, enough to start recalling the congressmen who won't get rid of Trump and his manipulators

govt inflation calculator says $60k in 1989 is like $116k in 2016 (no 2017 numbers yet, will only be slightly higher).
Original MSRP 1989 Chevrolet Camaro $11,495.00 (2dr Coupe IROC Z $14,145.00 and Mustang V8 started even lower), so yeah, income has just about doubled in nearly 30 years

Why are you guys upset about the changes to the h1-B visa, they do make sense to me. All having it as low as 60k is doing is stripping your skilled workers of jobs, if someone is really good and worth learning from they'll be on a lot more than 60k and it's not like the US economy needs a big influx of trained workers to help upskill them. It's not good for business as it removes a source of cheap labour but overall for the country I'd think it's a win. Maybe 130k is a bit high but 60k is real low, thats basically graduate level developer in aus.

Whenever I hear employers in X industry complain that they 'can't find enough skilled workers,' I ask, has employee compensation increased? If it hasn't, they're just whining about not being willing/able to pay what the market will bear.

I admittedly am basing this on how the industry was when I got into it, so that's damn near 20 years ago and probably not so relevant. Every recruiter I talked to preferred to hire citizens because it was so much easier, dealing with the H1-B visas, I'm told, was a huge pain in the ass. We had a lot of H1-B people because we couldn't find enough competent citizens to fill all the available jobs. This seems like it would hurt our industry because that's often still the case, especially at some of the bigger firms, and $130K is pretty high, even for this neck of the woods. It would make it harder to find people to fill the jobs we have open.

For reference in competency, when I first started interviewing people my boss told me to just give them the FizzBuzz problem. It's a pretty simple programming one. Given a set of numbers, print "fizz" if the number is divisible by 3, "buzz" if it's divisible by 5, "fizzbuzz" if it's divisible by both 3 and 5, otherwise just print the number itself. Felt almost insulting to ask that question to people I assumed were competent programmers based on their resumes, only to find out a shocking number of candidates couldn't do it. For those of you that aren't programmers, that'd likely show up on a quiz in your first year, maybe first semester, of programming classes.

I won't affect me where I'm at as we have a pretty small programming staff (me) and no open reqs but I bet big Java shops like financial institutions will find it a lot harder to fill mid-level positions.

The minimum pay requirements for visas is just another way to discourage immigration. But on the other hand, it does help people here get jobs. In a way.

Oh god, even better. Here's the transcript of his speech in honor of Black History Month. (I'm transcribing this from an image of the text, so there may be typos)

Well the election, it came out really well. Next time we'll triple the number or quadruple it. We want to get it over 51, right. At least 51.

Well, this is black history month, so this is our little breakfast, our little get-together. And just a few notes. During this month, we honor the tremendous history of the African-Americans throughout our country. Throughout the world, if you really think about it, right. And their story is one of unimaginable sacrifice, hard work, and faith in America. I've gotten a real glimpse during the campaign; I'd go around with Ben to a lot of places that I wasn't so familiar with. They're incredible people. And I want to thank Ben Carson, who's going to be heading up HUD, and it's a big job, and it's a job that's not only housing, it's mind and spirit, right? And you understand that. Nobody's going to be better than Ben.

Last month we celebrated the life of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. whose incredible example is unique in American history. You read all about Dr. Martin Luther King a week ago when somebody said I took the statue out of my office. And it turned out that that was fake news. The statue is cherished. It's one of the favorite things -- and we have some good ones. We have Lincoln, we have Jefferson, and we have Dr. Martin Luther King. And we have other. But they said the statue, the bust, of Dr. Martin Luther King was taken out of the office. And it was never even touched. So I think it was a disgrace, but that's the way the press is. It's very unfortunate.

I am very proud now that we have a museum, National Mall, where people can learn about Reverend King, so many other things, Frederick Doug -- Douglass is an example of somebody who's done an amazing job that is being recognized more and more, I notice. Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and millions more black Americans who made Americans what it is today. Big impact. I'm proud to honor this heritage and will be honoring it more and more.

Folks at the table, in almost all cases, have been great friends and supporters. And Darrell, I meet Darrell when he was defending me on television. And the people that were on the other side of the argument didn't have a chance, right? And Paris has done an amazing job in a very hostile CNN community, he's all by himself. Seven people and Paris. I'll take Paris over the seven. But I don't watch CNN, so I don't get to see you as much. I don't like watching fake news. But Fox has treated me very nice, wherever Fox is, thank you. We're going to need better schools, and we need 'em soon. We need more jobs, we need better wages, a lot better wages. We're going to work very hard on the inner city. Ben's going to be doing that, big league, that's one of his big things that we're going to be looking at. We need safer communities and we're going to do that with law enforcement. We're going to make it safe. We're going to make it much better than it is right now. Right now it's terrible.

I saw you talking about it the other night, Paris, on something else that was really -- you did a fantastic job the other night on a very unrelated show. I'm ready to do my part, and I will say this, we're going to work together. This is a great group, this is a group that's been so special to me, you really helped me a lot. If you remember, I wasn't going to do well with the African-American community, and after they heard me speaking and talking about the inner city and lots of other things, we ended up getting, I won't go into details, but we ended up getting substantially more than other candidates who had run in the past years. And now we're going to take that to new levels. I want to thank my television star over here -- Omarosa's actually a very nice person. Nobody knows that. I don't want to destroy her reputation. She is a very good person and she's been helpful right from the beginning with the campaign and I appreciate it, I really do. Very special. So I want to thank everybody for being here.

What the Johnson Amendment is: It’s named for Lyndon B. Johnson, who introduced it in the Senate in 1954, nine years before he became president. It bans all tax-exempt nonprofits — which includes churches and other houses of worship, as well as charities — from “directly or indirectly” participating in any political candidate’s campaign.

What Trump has against it: Trump presents this ban on participating in politicking as a restriction on the freedom of faith groups to put their religion in action, if their religion calls on them to campaign for a candidate. At Thursday’s prayer breakfast, Trump said that his reason for opposing the Johnson Amendment is that it impinges on the American “right to worship according to our own beliefs” — apparently describing campaign participation as a form of worship.JMFC-
He better be removing their tax exempt status too then.

Johnson Amendment wasn't put in place just by executive order.

Even if Trump successfully amended that amendment, and if it turns out badly, people can still amend the Trump Amendment.

There are plenty of churches who also agree that it's bad to mix politics and religion. I'm pretty sure my pastor would not endorse any politicians nor will he take money intended for worshipping God and give them to earthly politicians.

Anyway, this is how Trump boosts his "ratings". You guys really should stop reading the news... or try to just ignore his BS talks.

Ignoring him reduces his 'ratings' and it'll be beneficial to your health too.

Overturning that order would pretty much make certain churches the new SuperPACs. Suddenly any church can advocate and spend money to support a candidate. People can donate to that church as a charitable donation, getting a tax break. Church doesn't have to pay *any* taxes on it nor do they have to disclose who donated or how much. Completely opaque way to funnel money to candidates with absolutely no regulations around it.

Some things he can do by executive order, but a lot of things he just cannot do just because he said so. Just like the wall he said he's going to build.

Yes, I can agree that we should stay informed, but if it's going to piss you off and there's really nothing you can do to counter it... other than you go march around blocking traffic in some protests..., then we might as well just let it go and move on. In order for these protests to work is if we have way more than 52% of the population against it. For most of us, our congressmen are already onboard to not cooperate with Trump... so we can't even call congress up about our frustration...

If you can think of something constructive to do when you're 'informed' of Trump's BS, by all means do it.

If all you can do is just sit there and fume, then fuck that. Do what Elsa does... and just let it go.

I believe all the Trump negative publicity will still help him..., and his fan boys will love seeing you guys suffer just by Trump saying a few things.

IMHO, fuck that shit.

Ignoring him is the best thing we can do to help this country. Whatever you say, whatever you tweet, we don't give a fuck... and other than executive orders, you will not be able to get your way.

Anyway, I still have faith that he won't single handedly destroy america. I don't believe he can make America great again, but I'd be glad to be wrong.

Fuck these assholes. They did plenty to discredit the Occupy Wall Street movement because of their fantasy ideology that will never exist in the real world. Anarcho-Communist, Anarcho-Syndicalist, Anarcho-Capitalist, whatever. If 'Anarcho' is in the name, it's nonsense.

It's all bullshit and most of the participants engaging in blac bloc terrorism are just white, middle-class pussies who fold when anybody offers resistance. Then they start crying for the police to help them. Look at the guy who punched Richard Spencer. He couldn't even lay the douche out with a running sucker punch.

Billi -
What we can do is continue to point out what he's doing, that it's wrong, that he's lying, and motivate people to vote accordingly in midterm elections. To get Republicans nervous about blindly supporting him. I'm not saying to give yourself a heart attack, but ffs people get wrapped up in what characters on a TV show are going to do and tweet/post/talk about it, we can do the same thing about our country!

I think it's more than obvious some of the things Trumps saying that he will do is BS or just plain wrong. Liberals are all onboard already. centrists are mostly all onboard too. I'm sure even a lot of the conservatives are getting ready to say amen too, except the liberals have no attractive alternatives to offer these people.

Just like you guys willing to settle with Hillary, they're willing to settle with Trump. Obama had a chance in the past 8 years to do something for those middle class white folks. Granted I'm not sure what could he have done... Obamacare really should help those folks out too, but I guess global trade really just wasn't working well.

This trend of protectionism is not just a US electoral college fail, but a global phenomenon. People are understandably upset.

I just wish Bernie were the one actually dealing with this issue than Trump. Hillary for sure won't even deal with it if elected. She believes we'll be stronger together, but we just all have to be together with her, if you're left behind, too bad...

Anyway, I honestly believe all the angry protests not only is a time waster, but it also helps pump up his 'ratings'.

We can only hope DNC learned something last November and is now strategizing how to win back congress and the White House.

Uh, no. If literally the largest protests in the history of the country didn't clue you in, most liberals are not only not "on board," the majority of the country is not "on board."

And just about the worst thing we could do is tune out and ignore the problem.

This is exactly the problem with you intellectual liberal type. We are stronger together, and you need to get together with the program dumbasses, trust us, you are too dumb to fully understand anyway and not to mention the basket of deplorables... Who gives a fuck about them? Wish they can all just vanish out of thin air...

Global trade aside, since it's too difficult for me to grasp, what did you mean most liberals were not onboard? Hillarys 52% popular vote was really fraudulent? Most liberals actually voted for Trump? Largest protest in the history of the nation didn't include most liberals? Can you explain what you're talking about because my little brain is really confused. Anyway, if I'm not worthy of your time, I understand.

If there's something a patriotic American can do, I'm certainly not against it.

My vote wouldn't make a difference, but I voted my voice a crossed.

I may join a protest later when Trump actually pulled off amending the constitution in a wrong way, but even that is an exercise in futility imho. Maximum damage he can do is 8 years. If DNC cannot figure out a way to win the White House back, I'd be more upset at the DNC than Trump.

He could get us into a prolonged overseas military operation [(?) the US hasn't declared war since WWII] this year and get impeached. That damage will extend well past his time in office.
More likely to happen; continued lack of diplomacy. Foreign countries will be less and less willing to make deals with us (we still export things, and do need to keep importing). The 1% can move to Monaco and the 99% will be stuck in whatever shit we're left with.

As long as other countries just see him as all bark and no bite most of the damage done will be reversible fairly quickly after he leaves office..

You literally just said that everybody's on board and nobody minds what is happening. "Just like you guys willing to settle with Hillary, they're willing to settle with Trump."

Or maybe I've misunderstood what you're saying? You're never very clear.

Who gives a fuck about them? Wish they can all just vanish out of thin air...

Every time somebody I know would say "What the hell is wrong with these rural dumbasses?" during this election cycle, I'd try to explain why they should be listened to - although it got harder and harder when the neo-nazi, neo-fascist stuff kept happening. They have not been included in the prosperity generated in the last eight years.

But at the same time, they also rail against lots of things that would help them, and they decry the fact that the government doesn't care about them but consistently vote for candidates who slash taxes, eliminated earmarks (which were traditionally used to bring job-generating projects to local districts), kill unions, and who want to essentially destroy government.

They also refuse to accept the realities of a global economy and of time. Just as British Coal Miners were in a declining position for almost 40 years before British Coal went under forever in the 1980s, American coal mining, while still relatively healthy compared to British Coal Mining back then, is not going to generate any new jobs ever again - it'll continue to decline no matter what politicians do.

Similarly, the jobs we had in industrial centers in the midwest and south, the Furniture industry in the Carolinas, the car industry in Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, and others, these jobs are gone and won't return. And no amount of posturing is going to make them return in any great numbers.

NAFTA is blamed for this, but these industries were fleeing to other places long before NAFTA - this industrial migration began in the 1970s, and NAFTA was one way we could at least get some concessions out of what was already going to happen anyway. Remember Michael Moore's film Roger & Me? At least a half dozen factories are directly depicted in that film being shuttered so new ones can be opened in Mexico. Principle filming of Roger & Me was done from 1986 to 1988 - half a decade before NAFTA.

At the same time, many of these voters whine about NAFTA and illegal immigrants (who are leaving in greater numbers than they are entering), and about Black people being lazy. But they don't seem to want to do anything to help themselves change careers or move to places with booming industries. It's hard to uproot your life, it's true, particularly when you're older. But if you haven't had a good job in your area in more than a decade and nothing is on the horizon, it's time to think about what you can do to better your situation by leaving.

Don't tell me I don't care. But don't ask me to help if you're not willing to help yourself and specifically keep voting to harm other people and against your own interests.

Can you explain what you're talking about because my little brain is really confused. Anyway, if I'm not worthy of your time, I understand.

Mine too, because it's not at all clear what you're saying. If I've misjudged what you've said, I'm sorry. But you have a history of intentionally being unclear so you can take positions on both sides of an issue.

I may join a protest later when Trump actually pulled off amending the constitution in a wrong way, but even that is an exercise in futility imho. Maximum damage he can do is 8 years. If DNC cannot figure out a way to win the White House back, I'd be more upset at the DNC than Trump.

No. The "maximum damage" that can be done is that we're all dead in a hot war with a nuclear power, or that many of us are dead as a result of a civil war. That's why you elect people who at least try to represent every American. This is the first President I can recall who wasn't at all interested in representing anybody but those he likes.

Bottomline is that blame game is stupid. Right blames left and left blames right and we go nowhere. Best thing the left can do is to come up with more candidates like Bernie, rather than Hillary. With candidates like Hillary, rich still gets richer and poor still get poorer. Black lives matter more in theory, but blacks still get shot for real. What's the difference other than more politically correct?

Except that he tweeted that if anything happens, it's all the judges fault. I doubt he did it intentionally because he's not that smart, but he's literally set up a situation where if there's a terrorist attack, he can use that to attack one of the three branches of government.

This is a direct attack on the entire basis that the American government stands on. He attacked democracy. I'm not okay with just hoping that Elon Musk finds time to talk some sense into him in between trying to build a tunnel under LA to avoid traffic instead of, ya know, not living 20 miles from work.

I think liberals can't really talk any sense to conservatives and vice versa. They all just have different senses... However, perhaps as one billionaire to another, they'll be able to have some sort of influence? They have money in common...

To me, that's probably way more effective than just us protesting?

Now I don't quite understand what you meant by trump attacked democracy?

Trumps ban was meant to stop terrorists from coming in, but it also stopped a lot of good folks from coming in... Now if we lift that ban and if terrorists come in, of course they'll want to blame that judge... There are no perfect solutions, each has its draw backs... Trumps 'attack' can't possibly destroy our legal system... This is all just part of check and balance at work as intended by our constitution, isn't it?
