Can't get it out of my head.
Back in the early nineties I watched this japanese (?) animation in a macross style setting. The only details I remember about it, is that the main character had an implant in his hand, a sort of circular thing that helped him do whatever he had to do, he was probably a fighter pilot of some sort. He might have been an orphan too, you know your typical you-have-daddy-issues-but-since-he-was-such-an-ace-we're-gonna-help-you-overcome-them anime plot device.
There was a mother ship / battle station, from which they launched their missions and a motherly figure.
This is my search on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/search/title?countries=jp&genres=animation&keywords=cyborg&release_date=1980,1992), but I can't really point it.
Style-wise, it was darkish. Detective Batman dark.
I don't think there were variable fighters, but I'm fuzzy on that detail though.
