The Scots are having a referendum or something tomorrow about whether to leave the UK - how will this affect the Australian flag?

Whatever happens, will we still be able to buy cheap shitty disrespectful Chinese-made flag trinkets around each time Australia Day rolls around.

Because, you know, it just isn't Straya Day without flag thongs, flag boardshorts, flag stubbie coolers, flag flags that you stick on your car, et-fucken-cetera.

Why the fuck do you still have a union jack as part of your flag? (as if you have anything to do with that)

It was put on there in the beginning and no-one has been arsed to change it since. Every now and then there's a flurry of 'lets change the flag' but australians are pretty conservative and tend towards 'ain't broke, don't fix'.

They let you lot have flags now?

We need something to wear as a cape when we're pissed

They'll add Mel Gibson to it.

I think if they leave, and the Union Jack changes, the Oz will say bugger it, and keep the flag as is.

Heh. Didn't realize this Scottish vote could have such impact such as flag changes to so many nations...

Anyway, without army of her own, couldn't England just take it back by force? William Wallace wish things could've been this easy back then.

I say Scotland should secede from the UK and join the United States via treaty, as Texas did in 1845. Scotland could become the 51st state - the Tartan State, perhaps - and the first of many more to come in the New American 21st Century Imperialism!

Bookmakers say nay:

Now if all the unionists in Northern Ireland would move back to Scotland, 'No' would win by a mile.

The outcome will probably be the same as votes for Quebec independence or whether or not Puerto Rico wants to become a state/its own country/remain a US territory.

Scottish independence referendum: Alex Salmond addresses final campaign rally - live | Politics | theguardian.com (http://www.theguardian.com/politics/scottish-independence-blog/live/2014/sep/17/scottish-independence-referendum-salmond-and-darling-interviewed-on-today-live#block-5419b929e4b04db5de86f55b)

Oil-rich Shetland could opt to leave Scotland if it votes for independence, Alistair Carmichael, the Scottish secretary says. He's been speaking to my colleague Esther Addley, and she's filed this.

In an interview with the Guardian, Carmichael said if the islands were to vote strongly "no" but the Scottish national vote was a narrow yes, then a "conversation about Shetland's position and the options that might be open to it" would begin.

The Lib Dem MP, who represents Orkney and Shetland in Westminster and has been secretary of state or Scotland in the coalition government since last October, said those options might include the islands modelling themselves on the Isle of Man, which is a self-governing Crown dependency, or on the Faroe Islands, which are an autonomous country within the Danish realm.

Asked if he was suggesting that Alex Salmond should not necessarily take for granted that oilfields off Shetland will belong to Scotland in the event of a yes vote, he said: "That would be one of the things that we would want to discuss. I wouldn’t like to predict at this stage where the discussions would go."

What's interesting to note is the wide margin on the Shetlands, which is likely to quieten down the SNP for some time.

Scotland could have complete energy independence if they attached a turbine to William Wallace's grave.

Or Alex Salmond's mouth.

We've got rid of Piers Morgan again too! Epic win!
