I watched Thor: Love and Thunder the other day.

Bit shit, some cringe moments, but good story. 5/10 melons.

If I was to re-write it, I'd focus more on the origin story part of Mighty Thor and have it fill out the whole movie, rather than just: oh whoops she's a Thor now, in the first 30 minutes. That bit had lots of potential which was just ignored.

Typical of a Taika Waititi films, the cameos really shine. There are a handful of really great bit-parts here.

I came across a fun show called "i'm sorry" on HBO Max (it's on some other platforms as well). It ran for two seasons and was picked up for a third season which was eventually killed by COVID.
It was created by Andrea Savage and Jason Mantzoukas. They're playing comedy writers and it centers mostly around Andrea's family. Very simple premise but the writing is fun. Lots of fun supporting cast like Judy Greer, Martin Mull, Kathy Baker.

It's like a more grounded version of The League but kind of gives off that same vibe. Which makes sense given the crossover in talent.

I knew going in that She-Hulk was just going to be a week to week lawyer show, a very different style from the rest of the MCU series which were more like a long movie spread across episodes. I've really enjoyed it, the format, the tone, the writing, the subtle, small looping rather than one big arch, and the fact it's just having fun with things.

Finished Season Four of Better Call Saul. It has become a late-night obsession. I'll plan to just watch fifteen or twenty minutes before bed, but then a couple hours go by before I know it.

Don't get me wrong; I can't wait to see more. But, I thought...

...they could have ended it right there after S4. Instead of a season-ending cliffhanger, it was like a satisfying reward for making it through 40 episodes.

And I just learned that season six isn't yet on Netflix, so I guess I'll have to watch Breaking Bad in the meantime, after I finish S5 of BCS, of course.

But, unlike Saul, which makes me want more, when I've tried BB before I was actually glad when episodes ended because they weren't fun to watch. I wonder if it will still be that way.

Stumbled upon The Man In The High Castle while looking for something to watch before bed the other night. Interesting idea.

Opinions of a mostly historical nature below after just one episode. No actual spoilers.

As much of a fan of sci-fi, time travel, dystopian futures, history, WWII, and imaginative storytelling as I have always been, the concept is hard to believe. Yeah, I know, so is a lot of stuff in good fiction. But still, there's something not quite right here. It didn't "suck me in" like good shows sometimes do. I'm not giving up, but I'm kinda doing one of these: :erm:

I should watch more than one episode before coming to conclusions, I know, but I never let incomplete information stop me from sharing an opinion. :)

The Man in the High Castle is a good show with a crap ending because apparently they didn't have the final season they were supposed to.

George
October 26th, 2022, 12:33 PM
Well, that saves me a lot of time. Thanks.

What made me skeptical of the concept is...

...not that the Allies could have lost WWII. They could have. If Hitler had invaded Great Britian in 1941 instead of the USSR, things could have turned out very differently. The USA might not have gotten involved in Europe. If the Japanese had destroyed our carriers on December 7th, 1941, it could have made us uncompetitive in the Pacific for a long time. Perhaps isolationism would have been seen as preferable in the months or years before we could mount a proper offensive against the Japanese with a new fleet, and in that time, the Japanese would have been improving their supply lines and defenses.

But, what I couldn't quite grasp, is the idea that the American culture would have changed so drastically in such a relatively short time. Just because one country conquers another doesn't mean the conquered citizens start taking on the habits and personalities of the conquerors.

Or, maybe they do and I need to double-down on my self-guided continuing education in world history. I guess as the Roman empire grew, people in conquered lands became "more Roman" as time passed. But, I'm thinking that takes generations, not less than twenty years.

But I couldn't get past the first episode as well. And it has nothing to do with the culture change, it's that the Germans could transport a nuclear bomb across the Atlantic and then also somehow invaded from that far away. The logistics of what was proposed just isn't even remotely possible. Again, how did the Germans cross the Atlantic? They couldn't even figure out a way to cross the English channel and somehow they are going to cross the Atlantic?

I don't care if they nuked a couple cities. They still have to cross the Atlantic to invade. Maybe I should read up on the premise of the show to understand how they can even pretend to justify how it happened. Like, I need a History channel special outlining the before. :)

You do know the show is based on a 1962 novel by Philip K. Dick with thematics on american civil war and the I Ching?

This is the book background premise taken from Wikipedia:

"In The Man in the High Castle alternative history, Giuseppe Zangara assassinates President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, resulting in the continuation of the Great Depression and the policy of United States non-interventionism at the start of World War II in 1939. American inaction allows Nazi Germany to conquer and annex continental Europe and the Soviet Union into the Greater Germanic Reich. The exterminations of the Jews, the Romani people, the Slavs, homosexuals, and all other peoples whom the Nazis considered subhuman ensued. The Axis powers then jointly conquered Africa. Imperial Japan expanded its colonial empire with occupations of eastern Asia and Oceania, and invaded the West Coast of the United States, while Nazi Germany invaded the East Coast; the surrender of the Allies ended World War II in 1947. I liked the second season, I guess most people don't but I did. Third was decent. 4th has been the best after the 1st season. Let's not forget that Germans were developing rockets... they're the world's experts in rockets at the time.

Americans and Russians 'absorbed' these nazi scientists in our current timeline and later on developed our own ICBMs... and eventually got to the moon all thanks to Nazi scientists.

Japanese also did invade the West Coast with lots of money in our current timeline. :p

Counterpart was very good - Smart and taking their time with some amazing performances. I wish they'd had another season or so.

The Peripheral is weird. I really like the book (by William Gibson), but they're seemingly changing a whole lot of the things and ideas that I specifically liked. It's still good and interesting, but it feels more Westworld-y and way more action-y than I'd prefer. But the design work and some of the performances are really good so far.

Anyway, last night we watched Awake (2007) with Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba. Watched it on Prime Video. I pressed the trailer button and they didn’t show a proper trailer, it was just a random scene out of the film. This irritated me so I went on YouTube to find the actual trailer and unfortunately it revealed way too much. I was able to easily predict the film, but we watched it anyway.

I guess the folks who run Prime also knew that, which is why they only inserted a small clip instead of the full trailer. I think if I didn’t watch the trailer I would’ve definitely enjoyed it more.

I happened to watch a couple of B&W episodes of Beverly Hillbillies which centered around the little cabin being brought from the hills of Missouri/Tennessee to the backyard of the Clampett mansion in Beverly Hills.

A major guest star was Sheiìa James, later known as Sheila Kuehl, apparently a California Democrat of some note.

In the show she played an enthusiastic sociology graduate student who was convinced the Clampetts were oppressed servants of the Drysdales. She drove a vintage sports car of some sort. Web searches find references to an MG TD used in another episode, so it was likely that. I never saw a proper radiator shot.

Reading show timelines, it's not clear to me the location of the cabin in the show, after its relocation, was ever tidily resolved. Mrs. Drysdale did not tolerate the cabin, and arranged for its demolition, although Mr. Drysdale halted the demolition by living in the cabin for a while. But I think the cabin just sort of quietly disappeared from the show.

In a movie sequel to the series, apparently Jed Clampett moved back to "the hills" after losing his fortune.

SW, Mrs. Drysdale barely tolerated herself. She is the epitome of being so uptight she'd shit a diamond if she sneezed. And it looks like the cabin was dropped after those two episodes. Sheila James has been in a lot of stuff, most notably Dobie Gillis. Thanks to streaming these shows can still be seen.

So I decided to rewatch the Crush. She was supposed to be a 14-year-old girl in that movie, but was really 17 at the time, (actually maybe 16 at the time of filming). I had watched this in the theater way back in 1993, and probably a few times on TV since. Good movie overall.

If you're not out here in LA like me, you might not be familiar with "FYC", or "For Your Consideration" billboards. They're billboards throughout the city begging members of various academies to vote for a show or movie for awards season.

It feels very disingenuous of HBO to cancel Westworld and also have billboards up begging for people to vote for it for the Emmys, but here we are.

I’m seeing a few shows made by certain streaming platforms being removed from the parent platform and being whored out to rival platforms.

I don’t blame rivals for trying to spice up their lineup by buying some time with another show. But when the parent company removes it from their service it is not cool. People sign up to your service to watch your exclusives and removing them is a slap in the face.

This is why I still buy games rather than use subscription services, buy Amazon MP3s rather than use Spotify, etc. Once I own something, I want to own it forever.

HBO is setting a really bad precedent here, especially considering it doesn't really cost them anything to keep storing the video. It might be some sort of music licensing issue or whatever, but I think if HBO doesn't see a big enough backlash about this, other companies are going to start doing the same thing.

Rare White Ape

Netflix have produced shows and had them broadcast on free to air TV here, many months after they debuted on the platform, so sharing their content is nothing new. Plus it lets oldies who aren’t tech savvy get some exposure to new programs while also allowing Netflix to make a few bucks from a new audience.

But they didn’t take their content off their own service while this arrangement was in place. It might even be the other platform asking for exclusivity in the deal. You’d have to consider what each party’s strategy might be here.

But it is very stinky and if it becomes a problem then it would be more excuse for people to set sail and brave the salty seas for their shows.

I was under the impression that there's a non-zero cost associated with having near instantly streamable video storage vs archival storage of said video.

That being said, the speculation I'd heard when HBO pulled a lot of older/complete animation series from streaming this year was that they were trying to avoid paying residuals, renewing contracts, and/or hoping to license out or sell series rights.

Though with the insane reported budget of Westworld season 4 ($160 million) and terrible viewer figures, maybe there's some elaborate tax avoidance scheme going on.

Tom Servo
December 31st, 2022, 08:32 AM
It's non-zero, but I also don't think it's particularly high, either. The streaming itself is definitely the more expensive part, storage is cheap.

Watched a couple of movies and a TV show over the weekend.

The Resident - pretty creepy stuff, but overall a good movie that's cleverly done and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Fall - seriously intense and pulse-pounding. Also quite scary. Highly recommended. Some of the dialogue is cringe, but overall a great movie.

Both of these movies featured Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who for some reason I didn't instantly recognize from the Watchmen movie, (he was the Comedian).

Also watched all five episode of Treason, which was quite good. I saw the trailer and looked at the episode lengths (30-40 minutes each) and figured it was a small investment to make so I binge watched it in one sitting. It was pretty fast paced and intense. I love spy related stuff.

I watched Interstellar for the second time*

The first time was on an airplane and that's a terrible place to watch movies, so I always put an asterisk. The second time was much better and I really wish I had seen this in the theater (IMAX preferably) when it came out. Maybe it will be re-shown sometime.

The music is also amazing as I'm sure most of you already know...so I've been listening to that a lot. There are some clunky bits (Anne Hathaway's character talking about love reminds me of Rose Tico in the Last Jedi, it was just as cringe here) but overall a very good experience.

Started watching The Traitors after NPR talked it up. It's goofy as fuck, but it's not bad. Reality show competition that's vaguely Clue-like - three of the twenty or so people are designated traitors. The home viewers know who they are, but nobody else in the castle does. The traitors "murder" someone every night (kicking them off the show), and then the day ends with everyone voting who to send out that they think is a traitor.

It's silly, but the part that makes it work is Alan Cumming hamming it up about as hard as he fucking can as the puppet-master for the whole thing. I've always been a fan of his, and he's at his hammiest-weirdest in this.

I saw it in what our cinema brand calls V-Max. A big-arse curved screen maybe a bit smaller than IMAX. There are 35 of them in Australia.

And yeah, great film. A bit exhausting at times with its length and some of the scenes dragging on. A true auteur type film I guess, but for a wider audience.

My favourite aspect was the dedication to realistic science within the sci-fi, of course! It will live on forever thanks to the research work done on black holes to help visualise them for the special effects.

I watched Facing the Fat, about a 300+ pound guy who goes on a 40 day (later extended to 55 day) water diet. It was so stupid and outrageous and also dangerous. I don't know what he was thinking. I question the mentality of anyone who found it motivational as well, because it's not. He lost a bunch of weight (44 lbs I believe), but only after putting his body and mind through hell. Had he just eaten healthy in those 55 days then he would've probably lost the same amount of weight and felt better about himself, which would've set the foundation for long-term weight loss and good health. I say this because I followed his story after this movie, (which was in 2009), and saw that he not only gained all of that weight back, but also ballooned all the way to 500 lbs and then eventually did a similar diet and dropped to 385 lbs or something. Look him up, Kenny Saylors. Classic example of the dangers of yo-yo dieting. I also question the doctor that was advising him who was working at that faux-clinic. He should have his medical license revoked!

Watched Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It was so full of heart, and action, and sadness. It was hard not to get choked up at several points during the film when references were made to T'Challa. Story was fantastically done. Namor was awesome too.

Nice to see Shuri's tremendous growth as a character and into the role of Black Panther.

I was underwhelmed by Wakanda.

I didn't like the turn that wholesome and happy Shuri made. I thought the new girl was just thrown in and all of a sudden she somehow has made a powersuit at MIT? She started to explain the Vibranium detector and started out with some BS about mylar sheets? Meh. And in practice the final rendition of it was very cheesy looking. The way Shuri got to be Black Panther kind of irritated me as well...especially having evil thoughts like that. And most especially not believing in all the mysticism of Wakanda history...that was annoying and off putting. I wish Namor would have had a origin movie. That character deserved a whole lot more...especially with a rich backstory like that. Seems a shame to gloss over such a hardcore subject. Would have liked to see all the Talocan characters given a full movie to really dig into that world. I did enjoy the connection between Wakanda and Talocan though.

Yeah, they're very different movies about the same scenario. I think because they tried to accurately capture the people involved and their unique quirks maybe that's off-putting? I do like the "random celebrity explains things like I'm 5" part and how in some parts they just talk to the camera about what actually happened or what didn't exactly happen the same way. I'm still a bit confused about a lot of it but got the general idea.

There's a part of me I think that wants to work a fictional wall street job exactly as displayed on screen (and not the very long days we are meant to understand are happening off screen), like I want to go into an office with nice views and good lighting, put in some earbuds and fuck around on a computer for a few minutes, go to a brief but dramatic meeting and call it a day.

I'm also finally getting into Last of Us, I just watched Episode 5 so it'll probably be a week or so before I get to the finale with everyone else. Loving it so far!

My fiance doesn't want to watch it, but I have some time where I can watch while she's working. I recently took the ~30 seconds to figure out how to connect my bluetooth earbuds to the TV and watch without interrupting her work meetings going on in the next room.

She is a great actress. It was a good movie, although I'm not sure I'd have rated it best picture. Then again I haven't seen any of the other candidates other than Top Gun Maverick (which, while good, wasn't as good as Everything).

I did over the last few months finish Everything, After Yang, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Doraemon 2 (the CGI movie), and possibly some other stuff that i don't remembee much about at the moment.

I think she initially got noticed by Hollywood by Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? Sure has come a long way! Her Career really blossomed in Hollywood. I really like the male actor more, Chow Yun-Fat, but things just didn't work out for him in Hollywood. Even the supporting actress Zhang Ziyi became more famous than him. I guess Asian actors need to know some martial arts in order to be really noticed in Hollywood.

I haven't seen a lot of movies lately to make any judgments, but it does seem that Academy is particularly nice to asians this year. Not gonna complain about that! :p

I didn't watch Shazam 2, apparently no one else did either. Honestly I never watched the first one but overall it seems to be a decline in Marvel/DC AND Star Wars stuff recently with Mando Season 3 getting low viewership numbers as well and I believe Andor, as highly rated as it was, also didn't get high viewership

I think there might be franchise fatigue overall, but I want to see how Guardians 3 does at the box office.

I forget now where I saw it, but earlier today online I saw that Better Call Saul Season Six is coming to Netflix in April.

I've seen BCS seasons 1 - 5 and am on season 4, episode 7 or 8 of Breaking Bad now.

I just want to get it all over with before I stumble across any more spoilers for both series. But, once again last night, I had to turn off BB because I just can't stand some of the situations Walt gets himself into. I don't mind the criminal stuff. In fact, I wish there was more of it, compared to his family drama that tends to put a knot of tension and frustration in my stomach. Some of that is just so "cringe", as my kids would say - they leave off the y at the end - that I'm compelled to hit the Power button on the TV remove, go to bed, and come back days later as free time allows and my interest in the show returns.

It's a decent Hollywood action movie, but I think the original was still better overall. I liked F-14 better, I liked the female characters better, I like the music better too. Ummmm....
I'd love to tell you how much sense it starts making, but as someone who enjoyed the book it is loosely based on and did an episode by episode podcast (https://johnny60.libsyn.com/) watching and analyzing the show... I'd advise finding something to love about it (characters, performances, production design, etc) that isn't 'how much sense it makes' because it doesn't. The show ends up doing a lot of "What would be 'cool' on-screen right this second? We've got a ton of amazon's money to spend." at the expense of story and logic.

I'll watch the 2nd season out of a sense of obligation, but I sadly don't have a ton of hope for it.

The movie was quite good, not perfect as a couple of the players involved sort of felt like caricatures, HOWEVER it's also possible they were just that...weird.

The Maxwells in particular which I didn't know, the head of the company, Robert Maxwell's daughter is...........Ghislaine Maxwell

Also, I'm guessing people will think that most of it was made up but honestly we know that a LOT of what's in the movie actually happened...from what I know from seeing other reports and documentaries, about 75% was pretty accurate at least. Of course there's some additional hollywood flair.

The thing I didn't realize before was how close the timing of when Tetris was being promoted and the collapse of the Soviet Union was. Not that they were directly related except for that creeping capitalism mindset and was Tetris the catalyst in some way?

I watched two movies today, with similar and quite different elements:

The Super Mario Bros Movie

Almost Famous

Both are based heavily on nostalgia and references, especially to music but also just in "remember when this happened?". Both were quite fun to me, despite my lopsided knowledge of characters and happenings in one vs the other.

I think that, without a great knowledge of all the things happening in Almost Famous, they just seem like interesting (though not overtly life changing for the most part) things happening to the characters. Many things happen in TSMBM that are only interesting because of their similarity to a game moment, and otherwise have no significance.

One was a critically acclaimed box office bomb that became a cult classic. The other is, I believe, doing very well in theaters but is critically panned, and will probably lead to at least one sequel.

Anyway, the movie itself was decent. Some very cringe dialogue, (especially from Adam...his voice hurt my ears), but good fun overall. It's about 45 minutes long, and the second half is the movie all over again but with commentary by the creator I guess. No ads!

This policy reversal on passwords hasn't made it to USA / UK yet, but it is causing cancellations of accounts in the areas where the policy has been enacted. So those of you who share a login, watch out, they will probably be coming for your country soon enough.

So those of you who share a login, watch out, they will probably be coming for your country soon enough. I don’t understand this new crackdown. In our house there’s four of us who have several TVs/phones/computers/tablets that can be connected to our Netflix account at any given time. Our plan is for two screens. I hope they don’t start cracking down on people in the same household.

I have Netflix on my computer at work too, and would be annoyed if they disallowed that.

It’s like they’re begging for people to unsubscribe from their service.

Tom Servo

Ideally, Netflix only sees as far as your router. If they're seeing internal IPs/MAC addresses, there's a network misconfiguration going on.

It's still a stupid way to try to introduce it, but for most people who share an account within their household, it should not be an issue. As it is, your ISP can change your IP address any time they want, and some of them do regularly. It's not a good way to try to lock down to a single spot. Hell, for a while there Okta was telling me I was signing in from Tempe, AZ, despite being in Los Angeles. Before that, it was Irvine, CA. Now, suddenly, it's back in LA. All of those were going to be changes for the main gateway IP they were sending my traffic through.

dodint
April 22nd, 2023, 05:17 PM
Surely Netflix can tell if one IP is streaming multiple pieces of content at once.

Tom Servo
April 22nd, 2023, 05:27 PM
I think it's more that Netflix will block people if it sees a different IP than it's used to. That's part of their password sharing crackdown - if you connect from a different IP than what they normally see you come from, they will block it unless you add someone as a "guest account" for x dollars.

As it is, the top level plan allows for four simultaneous streams, so they definitely wouldn't be blocking more than one stream to the same IP.

Rare White Ape

This Netflix thing isn't about preventing single-login use in a household. You're still able to share it with anyone. It's just that any device that it's being used on needs to 'check-in' on the same network connection as the primary device every 7 or 30 days or something.

So for example if your PC at home was the primary device, anyone in the house could be logged into Netflix and you follow your maximum simultaneous users as per usual. Or if you are one of the people who share Netflix logins with a friend or your parents or whatever, they can still use it until the system decides it needs to check in on the primary device's network connection.

There will be ways around it.

We aren't too bothered about the Netflix thing. We usually only subscribe to pay TV for anywhere from one month to three or four. When we've seen enough or when too many things appear on another service that we want to watch, then we cancel one and move to the other. "Empire of the Sun", 1987 Steven Spielberg movie about a british kid in Shanghai during WWII when it's invaded by the Japanese and he gets sent to an internment camp.

This is one of those movies I never hear about, the only thing I knew was the basic plot details and the amazing score by John Williams. The movie was fine, but it didn't quite hit the right emotional notes and I wasn't sure where the plot was going exactly.

The kid, played by Christian Bale in his first (?) movie role seemed very uncaring overall about the death and destruction around him until the very end, only obsessed with airplanes, mostly the Japanese ones. I guess that's the point where he's bottling up all of his emotions but it didn't quite work in my opinion.

Overall 3/5
