I now have a short commute to work on some days, as opposed to a very short 10 minute jaunt of city driving to get to work. This gives me some time to be alone with my thoughts. Just enough to fully flesh out an idea.

Today's musing? The significance of naming it the "Civic" Del Sol instead of just Del Sol. There's something to that I think. It's an inference that, even though this was by all means a separate car with a separate purpose, there was some commonality there with the utilitarian car everyone loves and depends on. Maybe it was a reflection of the optimism of the mid-90's that you could have it both ways. You didn't have to stake your flag in one of two camps. You could have a Civic Del Sol. And beyond that, for one gleaming moment, you could have an edition of the Civic that was truly something unique. This wasn't just an Si or a Type R, a hopped up version of the base car, it was something else entirely. The only truly special Civic. A high water mark from the flood of exuberance of the Clinton years. There were smoke signals coming from the marketing department of Honda in those days, and they were trying to tell us something with the name Civic Del Sol. And now, two decades later, I think I finally took the time to decipher them.

Also, aren't there complications when an automaker introduces an entirely new model to the U.S. market? Certifications and licensing and fees and whatnot? But NOT if it's a variant to a current model? I remember a bit about this when the Stanza changed to Altima. The first year of the Altima, it was officially "Stanza Altima". It somehow made the transition less complicated and expensive for Nissan.

Or it could be as you imagine. :D

Nope, but when we were waiting for a tow on a car stolen in a robbery that we found, we noticed a car with its high beams on across the intersection. Guy was passed out drunk 20 feet back from the stop light for multiple light cycles.

He was double the legal limit.

I suppose it's a good thing he passed out at the stop sign and not while doing 50 on some crowded street. What's likely to happen to him? Will he likely get jail time, depending on how good a Lawyer he can hire?

Nah, in Illinois a 1st time DUI gets a 6 month driver's license suspension if they submit to chemical testing unless there are aggravating factors (usually no valid/suspended/revoked DL, personal injury crash, or prior DUI conviction). Not submitting to chemical testing gets a 1 year suspension.

The pump on the transmission broke spewing fluid all over. Transmission fluid smells bad when its burnt/vaporized/turned to smoke. That's gonna be 2500 bucks to fix and in addition its going to take nearly a week. So now i need to rent a car, guess whats really hard to do without a car, that's right pick up a rental car.

Its also like 70 buck cheaper from a 'Neighborhood' vs Airport location with the same agency. Anyone know if you get penalized for returning a rental early?

Eventually he stopped returning my calls. It worked itself out. Still saddens me somewhat as he was my room-mate and stood up in my wedding. I still considered him a friend.

On tumblr, seeing video ads for an anti-drone gun...it's apparently a signal jamming device of some kind....so it begins.

I do think drone use should be licensed and regulated, but this is a bit ridiculous.

novicius
November 29th, 2016, 04:31 AM
From what I've read, it still needs to be approved by the FCC (highly doubtful since it blocks usable data) and it doesn't destroy the drone or stop it from flying/filming.

Most drones will fly back to their origin point (allegedly) so how good of a deterrent is it?

Cam
November 29th, 2016, 05:12 AM
When my wife got a drone for her lab, she was supposed to register it with the FCC, which she did. There was no one around to make her do it though. When the drone is using GPS, it will not fly within five miles of an airport (we live less than five miles from an airport) and in certain no-fly zones (nearby military base.) However, GPS can be disabled in the settings and it can be flown manually. Rules only affect lawful people.

November 29th, 2016, 05:49 AM
If all I want is the drone off my property, a tool that does exactly that without destroying property seems like the best option. You can even follow it back to its origin to find the pilot and have a discussion with them.

The odd part is that was about her addiction to Coca-Cola, and I thought at first they were being coy and using that as a cover for the REAL Coke, but apparently no, she's been addicted to that also. Strange.

I go through phases with soda. Only ever really drink Diet Coke, but when I do, it becomes an addiction until I manage to kick it. I first did it in my mid 20's an immediately felt better, lost weight, had energy. It was awesome. I had some other things helping me at the time too, so I was able to not have any for probably about a year, minus a few as mixers here and there.

Lately though, I'll have some here and there, kick it for a month or two, then back on it. It's annoying.

One of my co-workers (CW1) has had the intro to Shoop by Salt n Pepa ("Oh yeah, I wanna shoop, baby"), as his main ringtone I think for as long we've worked together, about 4 years. He's a very conservative Christian, so I always thought it was odd, but never went past that.

Today, I was asked a question by another co-worker (CW2).

CW2: "Wouldn't it be funnier if his ringtone ended with 'myself in the hand'."

Me: "I don't get it."

CW2: "Because of the time he shot himself in the hand."

Me: "Oh... It's not 'shoot', it's 'shoop'. It means having sex."

CW1: "What?"

Me: "It's the intro to a song by Salt N Pepa called Shoop. It's about how they see a guy in a club and they want to have sex with him."

CW2: "I thought it was 'shoot' too. A lot of people at my gun club have that ringtone, they all think it says 'shoot'."

Me: *laughing* "One of the lines in the song is 'mmm mmm mmm for the smell of it'."

CW1: "I thought it meant the smell of the smoking gun."

Me: *doubles over laughing* "Hold on." *grabs headphones, gives them to CW1 and plays Shoop

CW1: *takes off headphones after less than a minute* "That's enough. That was pornographic! I have to change this in a heartbeat."

I'm just picturing the clientele at shooting ranges across middle America all jamming out to Salt N Pepa's anthem to the fine brother they spotted at the club.

I've had a Paypal Prepaid account for a few years, get direct deposit about 2 days before "regular" banks, and a few days ago they posted that you can instantly send money to your Prepaid account.

That worked because due to some issues, I was a bit broke, so I was able to sell a few things, and get some money.

Unfortunately, my money is now in LIMBO between them as the website continuously asks me to link the accounts, then gets stuck on loading...doesn't matter what browser or PC or anything I use. Called customer service 3 times, been told they're "working on it". Left messages on twitter with @AskPaypal who will happily respond to everyone else...have not responded to me. I was at my niece's apartment for Christmas today. My dad and nephew left and they weren't gone for five minutes before my nephew calls and says that my dad has a flat on his car. I drive over to his apartment, which is in the same complex, and see he's pulling the spare out of the trunk. I get out and grab the jack out of my car. I see he's got a 12v impact wrench to get the lugs off. Turns out the 12v socket doesn't work, so I grab the lug wrench out of my car. I put the jack under the car and raise it just a bit. I break the first few lugs loose and when I break the third one loose I use a bit too much force and my dumb ass bumps into the jack. Lessen learned, don't kneel while trying to break the lugs loose. I get the last ones loose and raise the car enough to get the flat off. Raise it a bit more and get the spare on and get the lugs tightened. I let the jack down and the spare bows out a bit at the bottom. I ask my dad if he knows what that means, "I put air in it?" "No, dad, it means you go and get the other tire fixed before the spare is flat as well."
The spare is twenty years old and had never been on the car('96 Lincoln Mk VIII).
My dad said the tire has a slow leak in it and he keeps putting air in it. What really got me was when he said "It doesn't leak air as bad when its warm out." Which means it has been leaking since at least last summer. He's had the car since last April and it has probably been leaking air since before he got it. Why, oh, why, do people continually put shit like this off? Especially when it's something as simple and vital as a tire.
A few months ago he called me and said that the car was jerking/surging when you accelerate. I talked to my ex-brother in law today and he said it was probably the u-joints being so out of whack and are in dire need of being replaced.
WTF dad.

Valve stems or valve stem cores. Have to dismount the tires to deal with the former; the latter can be done in your driveway if you have a core removal tool and an air pump.

I had a bad valve stem core from the start on my Monster 696, because Italian, presumably.

I do have insurance and have a dentist appointment, can't wait to see what happens next (sarcasm).

I don't know why I never went to a dentist, just stubborn I guess.

There was a big chunk of time where I didn't go... because I didn't have insurance. And I had some pretty unfortunate things happen during that time that weren't taken care of very well.

I've made sure to go to every appointment since then.

I went from '92-'16 without a dentist visit until this past July. It took two sessions to get my teeth clean. Amazing thing was no cavities and nothing needing to be pulled other than the I teeth they want to pull. They aren't bothering me so I'll pass for now.

Ditto. Cost me about $5k (with insurance!) to get "caught up." A couple root canals, a couple crowns, fillings, wisdom teeth extraction, and some gum work. :| Kids, don't neglect your teeth.

I was in a similar situation. I always hated the dentist. In high school it was recommended I get my Wisdoms taken out, but I didn't because IDK why.

Then my dad lost his job right after I left for college, which mean I lost insurance. I probably could have gone on my mom's plan, but I didn't.

Then I had an issue with an infection around one of my back teeth around the age of 21, while I was still in school. My dad had a new job, so I had insurance of some kind, I think, so I went in, got it cleaned up a bit, and got some anti-biotics, and an prelim appointment with an oral surgeon to get the Wisdoms out. Never followed up on the actual surgery though...

Then earlier this year (age 30), I had a bit of an issue again around my back teeth hurting. I have my own insurance of course now, so I finally went back to a Dentist. Amazingly, he said my teeth were in pretty good shape, but my gums could use some care. Be better about flossing.

As to the widsoms, he said at this point, there's no reason to take them out unless a problem actually arises. They're in as far as they're gonna go and not impacted. I forgot I had 4 molars taken out for braces when I was in my early teens. So that made the room for them to come in, kinda. They're uneven, in that the tops reach further down, and the bottoms are a bit faced out and not in as much. I have lots of crowding on my bottoms, so If I ever want to sort that out, the Wisdoms would need to come out I think.

I'm much better about brushing in my 20's and now than I was in my teens, and I try to floss every night, but need to be better. I'm going to be going for my free cleaning every 6 months.

I had all four wisdom teeth pulled at once when I was in the my late teens. SO goddamn thankful I did, after hearing horror stories from others. They had started to cut my cheek whenever I moved my jaw.

Tara and I have the money to fix her teeth. She has a crooked front tooth that could be fixed, but more importantly a couple of painful back teeth that have had cavities in the past and probably have them again.

But she's so terrified of dentists (and needles, and blood, and surgical implements, and pretty much anything touching her) that she refuses to go. Her literal answer to me is "in 10 years when my mouth is about to fall apart, I'll just get dentures." Which is bullshit since you have to PULL YOUR TEETH to use dentures.

They started advertising heavily around here for "dental work while you sleep" and figured that'd be perfect. Nope. "What if I wake up in the middle of it?!"

Gums aren't in great shape, need more cleaning....have one bad tooth that I can either get a filling/root canal possibly with crown, or they can just remove it...it's far back so I think I might just have it removed, instead of root canal...*shudder*

Total cost for everything would be $2,100 without insurance...or $700 if they just pull the tooth.

I HAVE insurance, or so I thought, but now they're saying it ended in 2014...argh, will need to check on that.

I have determined how many photos can be taken!

With a digital camera that has 22.3 megapixels, and takes photos at 14 bit color (camera can record about 4.4 trillion possible colors), the number of possible photos that could ever be taken is 1.175743e282349557.

So that number is 1175743 plus approximately 81 thousand pages of zeros at the end of it. That is the number of all photos that ever have been taken or ever could be taken, including photos that never will be taken. That number includes close up portraits from every possible angle of tank man in Tienanmen Square. It includes an absolutely complete documentation of a misson to Mars led by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump (as well as missions to every other planet.) That's everything. Every photo you could ever take, 1.175743e282349557 photos.

Happy Australia Day to You,

Happy Australia Day, Dear Australians!

Happy Australia Day to You!

Is it just a coincidence that Australia Day comes immediately after Robert Burns Night?

Things my 2017 MG calendar teach me.

Thanks but Aussie Day has come and gone. Was yesterday by our "a little bit in the future" timezones.

I just had someone from the university call me. The young lady's enunciation was so bad I could not fully understand her. "I cannot understand you. Goodbye."

Thank you.

On a completely different topic, I was not sure where to put this anecdote. Lori called me this morning from Antarctica. They have a VOIP phone now, so people there can talk to their families, etc. Lori is getting to know the people there, including the mechanics. One of the mechanics there has a real job the rest of the year: restoring old cars. Apparently, he has 13 cars of his own, his favourite being a Jaguar E-Type. I told Lori to make sure she gets his contact info so that we can visit in the future. :D

...Antarctica...One of the mechanics there has a real job ...
so are you saying there's one non-hippy in Antarctica?

Cam

More than that. Most of the people at the station are maintenance, construction and tech people. Lori and her colleague are the only scientists there at the moment.

Seen plenty of ads for "want to work in Antarctica", nearly all mechanic, engineering jobs.
I'd be keen but no jobs for my lazy arse skills (they can all be done remotely, the poor life of the keyboard warrior!)

About a week and a half ago the cider mill that presses our apples gave me a gallon of Honey Crisp apple cider. I took it back to work, had a glass and left it in the fridge to share with others. I open the fridge yesterday and the jug has expanded outward even though its only 1/4 of the way full. I open it and it lets off a little hiss. I pour a glass of it and I notice that it smells like cheap alcohol. Looks like it was starting to ferment. Tasted pretty damned good and after ten minutes or so I had a smile on my face.

Realized tonight how ridiculous the management situation is at my job tonight.

Out to dinner with my mom like every week when my boss walked by and waved hi to me. It took me a good minute before I realized who the woman was. Guess thats what happens when you see the boss once every 3 or 4 months at max. I know who the warehouse supervisors and our warehouse General Mills rep(including his assistant) are and recognize them immediately, yet I have to think about what my boss actually looks like.

at one of my previous job, there had been so many restructures, and re-arrangement of the reporting chain, that I actually gave up bothering to know who was where in the organisation.

I know who my team leader was (a pain in my arse is what she was). I met my manager three times. Once when she was introduced to us, once when she gave my going away speech, and once when I went into a meeting with her and my team leader and reamed them out for utter incompetence.

To clarify, this was a job that I left several years ago.

My current job I enjoy most of the people I work with, but it's a very small organisation (seven people), and I find the office manager very difficult to deal with. The atmosphere is high stress though, so I'm leaving for the sake of my mental well-being, despite enjoying the work. I'm potentially staying on there for a while part time, but I'm getting myself all licenced up to go Uber driving, where I can work strange hours, be my own boss, and go to the gym lots.

The previous job referred to where there was a going away speech, I really enjoyed giving my speech, because I made some terrible jokes.

I announced that I had been preparing to leave this job for the previous month, so therefore had been stealing all the stationary, and if anyone had any documents they wished to dispose of, then I was willing to burn them on the fire that I intended to start on my way out the door.

The manager who didn't know anything about my sense of humour stood there looking extremely shocked. :)

While it is a possibility that I could go, it would be in her best interest to take another fellow scientist.

I was making a delivery to a nursing home today in a very tight parking lot. I had my ramp out and just as I started loading my cart I noticed a silver Impala trying to sneak around the back of the truck. The next thing I hear is the car running over my aluminum ramp. I walked to the back and noticed the handle for one side of the ramp broken off and laying on the ground. The lady who had been driving the Impala comes over with her arms full of Taco Bell bags and says "It wasn't marked. I didn't think it went that far out."
Well ma'am if you had paid attention maybe you would've noticed.
Replacing the handle is simple. Just undo a few bolts, slap the new one on and bolt it back up.
Called into work, talked to the boss and he said not to worry about any insurance info and to just filling out an accident report when I got back.
