I think the first camera was robotic, the pan was terrible (even allowing for it missing the crash)

Oh and I was behind a Porsche SUV and looked at its quad exhaust tips, the right pair had one that the inside was dark and sooty the other was fairly clean. Hadn't realised these were "fake", googled and found that while connected, the outside tip is on a pipe that's straight, the inside tip is connected but is a y junction. Obviously very little goes out that tip.
So it's virtually fake!

So I thought that this was supposed to be road legal, with a few track only versions. This looks less road legal than the Vulcan, which is track only.

Maybe it's the track only version? Or just still a concept/tech highlight?

Pretty sure no airbag means no roads anywhere, even the UK? And the video mirrors aren't legal yet, but that could change. Airbags won't.

Maybe the removable wheel can be swapped for a bagged version?

I think the direct translation of "ADR" is something like Arbeit (work) Drehungs (rotations) Reglung (regulator), with n = number of rotations (per minute).

It's an adjustable high-idle switch. :) You'd switch it on when parked and running the AC (or other power consuming accessories), for example.

High idle feature for PTO (but electrical loads) type activities. A Sprinter being a "work vehicle" could spend long periods idling while drawing high electric current. Think ambulance, mobile office, mobile garage etc.

WINKWORTH-SMITH: These days, because of the value of the car, it’s almost impossible to write one off.

A good example is—if you do a bit of Googling, you’ll find out who I’m talking about. His car came in, and he’d had a fairly substantial shunt. The car was in two halves. It had split. The car had done brilliantly, because he’d hit it right in the middle. The passenger [cell] was absolutely perfect.

We cut all the damage out of the tub, x-rayed it, crack-tested it, and then, using all the original body molds, the tooling, the layup books, and also some of the original staff that built these tubs back in the day, we rebuilt it.

PHIL HARDING (Development technician, McLaren): It’s not like you can go and pick another monocoque out and build a new car. It’s cost-effective to repair something worth 5 million pounds, isn’t it?

Finally watched that McLaren video. That guy is talking out his ass. The car was not built as a race car. It was intentionally built as the ultimate road car. It was just so good that you could take it racing and win. The engine was not an "off the shelf BMW" unit. It was bespoke built for the F1 based on a stillborn M8 engine.

Kchrpm
August 5th, 2017, 07:32 PM
Yeah, he didn't really know what he was talking about, he only bought it as an investment piece from the way he describes it. His experience with the maintenance is his experience, though, and the maintenance stuff seems to be backed up by the other recent article on the F1.

Freude am Fahren
August 5th, 2017, 08:04 PM
Yeah, I don't doubt his actual experiences, just his 'knowledge' of the car, and the explanations.

The tire balancing seems kinda BS though. Not saying McLaren didn't do this, just a bit of overkill for anyone that doesn't intend to take the car over 200mph (most in the US probably won't even see 150). It's not about it being a race car, it's about being safe at 240mph, which is what McLaren, I assume, standardizes its maintenance for. Yeah, you need $50k worth of special tires, and perfect balance for those speeds.

The GLA 45 AMG comes with a 2.0L twin-scroll turbo
The latesty issue of Motor Trend has it listed at 375hp 350ft-lb, how drivable would that be? I know tuners in the 90's were able to do that, but the lag and reliability wouldn't be acceptable in a new Mercedes-Benz

http://www.evo.co.uk/mercedes/gla/19198/2017-mercedes-amg-gla45-review-does-the-hot-crossover-sacrifice-its-dynamics-for

From the latter: "The engine itself is spritely, revs up quickly and cleanly, and emits a pleasant and crisp noise as it does so. Surprisingly, considering how heavily boosted the engine is to produce so much from so little, the engine’s power delivery is very linear. What’s not so shocking is the engine's punch. The first time you touch the throttle it creates a startling leap forward, but it's surprisingly easy to get used to the performance and that initial thrust soon seems almost routine."

Kchrpm

balki

That's exactly what was thinking
Couldn't find any mention of an electric aid anywhere either

thesameguy
August 28th, 2017, 09:57 AM
Antilag really isn't usable on a street car - shutting off spark plugs so that raw fuel combusts in the exhaust manifold isn't good for emissions and really isn't good for exhaust manifolds.

With direct injection making high static compression ratios possible, cam phasing to improve intake velocity, and solid state ignitions that allow for extreme advance at low engine speed you really don't need antilag.... off boost performance of modern engines is really good.

Kchrpm
August 28th, 2017, 11:35 AM
Electric anti-lag is just an electric motor that spins up the turbos when the exhaust isn't doing it.

thesameguy
August 28th, 2017, 12:10 PM
I think you're talking about electric hybrid turbos (or electric assisted turbo), not antilag. EHTs only exist in a couple specific racing applications - there are no production examples yet.

August 28th, 2017, 03:45 PM
Okie dokie :)

thesameguy
August 28th, 2017, 03:56 PM
Both Garrett and KKK were huge on those turbos about ten years ago, saying they were going to revolutionize everything, then nothing happened. I've heard BMW is supposed to use one - maybe next year - but Audi was supposed to use one in '11 or '12, then nothing happened. IME, it's like twincharging... it seems like a good idea til you weigh the cost and complexity against the gains. The math doesn't work.

Freude am Fahren
August 29th, 2017, 09:51 AM
Well the Huge leaps in the electrical side of things cars have gone through in the last decade, and the things learned in F1 about them could bring them back into profitable territory.

thesameguy
August 29th, 2017, 11:34 AM
Definitely. I don't follow racing much, but I think the thing that made electrically assisted turbos possible is actually hybrid drivetrains... a little 140a alternator and a 12v battery cannot power an electrically assisted turbo really at all, but if you have 202v battery you can do a lot more neat electrical things with it. :) Thing is, that turbocharged hybrids don't make much sense in real life - in a race car, more is better, but on the street turbo and electric motor just end up tripping all over each other. I can't speak for everyone, but high-boost cars like the CLA45 and current Ecoboosts really doesn't suffer lag in a measurable way. I mean, it's there, but it's not like '80s or most '90s cars where you had to wait for power... you've got power at 1000rpm, you just have a lot more at 2000. :)

That is just lovely.

As for the hybrid turbo stuff. I tend to agree. It certainly isn't a necessity if our ultimate goal is electric. If that's the case, I think hybrid performance cars are pointless anyway (other than fueling advancements in tech). But as long as manufacturers are going to cling to petrol, and therefore hybrids, I think the kind of Turbo tech we see in F1 could be pretty popular.

Like you say, once you add the beefy electrical system of a hybrid, there's not a lot of reason NOT to add the ERS-H type device to higher-end sports cars, especially since everyone is going turbo these days anyway. It's downsides are cost/complexity, but in the 6-7 figure market, that's kinda moot.

The MB Project-1 thing will show it's real potential in the market. But it will never really be feasible on "everyday" cars.

Apparently it's MOSTLY used as a tax dodge for people buying expensive-ass cars (that explains why I see more Montana plates here than you'd expect, and they're almost always on six-figure rides), but I'd be happy to set aside some money if they go after me for sales tax and registration fees... It's actually a legal requirement. It's on HID's greater than 30ish watts (don't know exactly what it is but the 25w lights on the porsches don't need them and the 35w upgraded ones do) you have to have a means of washing the lights to remove dirt etc which can lead to dazzling oncoming traffic. On the porches it's how you can tell they spec'ed the better lights.

I had an interesting dream last night ....I was walking around somewhere and they had a contest to win a new Acura....I got keys and tried to start the car and it worked...won the car. Sadly it wasn't the new NSX, but another concept car.

It was a really complex interior with lots of buttons everywhere and high tech features (I feel like this is reaction to my 86/FR-S which is bare minimum when it comes to this).

ANYWAY, the interesting part is that since the features were so unique, they had a screen with a video game that you could play to get used to the controls before you actually drive the car. I thought this was a cool idea that could be a way for new drivers, or people not experienced with certain driving setups to learn how to drive the car better with actual controls (for drive by wire at least)

The Mazda 6 will be getting the turbocharged engine from the CX9, which currently outputs 227 hp and 310 lbs*ft.

KillerB
November 15th, 2017, 08:28 PM
It's actually 250 hp on premium gas. I don't understand why all these publications quote the 227 hp number you get on 87 octane when they don't do that for any other engine that gets reduced power on regular.

I doubt it'll be available with stick, unfortunately. :(

Kchrpm
November 15th, 2017, 09:35 PM
That's interesting. I wonder if that's some kind of marketing guidance/press release talk from Mazda, or if it's publications deciding that the intended market for the vehicle are people who are worried about gas mileage and therefore far more likely to be using 87 octane rather than 93.

Edit: doing a little digging

- Mazda's website currently lists 250 hp with a footnote about the lower octane/output
- Some Mazda press releases about the vehicle don't mention any output numbers (including the initial one)
- Press releases about the vehicle list 250 hp with a parenthetical immediately following about the lower octane/output
- The initial press release about the engine lists 227 hp with a footnote about the higher octane/output

TheBenior
November 15th, 2017, 09:53 PM
They probably quote that because Mazda actually quoted a power figure for 87 octane and said that it was fine to use it. I haven't seen too many other manufacturers do that.

I would be shocked if the Mazda6 turbo got offered with a manual transmission. They really don't sell enough of them to go through the expense of development. The best year of the current Mazda6 totaled 57k sold. They don't need a super sporty Mazda6 as a halo car when the Miata exists.

has anyone else noticed how car manufacturers over the years seem to have completely abandoned the "pull up" somewhat flush-mounted door handle in favor of the "pull toward you" open handle kind? I mean it probably is much more reliable and feels less flimsy, just thought it was interesting as I think almost all new cars have changed to it.

It's not an uncommon occurence on ANY 1st gen Scion tC's...take it from a former owner.

The problem is two fold. First, the piece is plastic when it should be metal, second the hatchback struts wear out and you have to forcibly push up on the handle every time you open it.

BTW, almost every scion TC I see around here has a lot of tape over it or replaced it (I can tell because they often swap it with a different color).

Mine was taped up for a while before I could get a replacement and find the time to install it, real PITA to put in.

Those pull up style handles were terrible on the '80s GMs. Not only were the functional parts of the mechanism made of pot metal which became structurally marginal below roughly 25* f, but the part you grip was shallow enough that you could only fit the pads of your fingers under, which could be a really irritating issue with gloves on.

This year I noticed a lot of people slowing down considerably and pulling over to the side as if they're double parking, they the turn in.
Wtf, we're taking about passenger cars making normal turns but leaving more than a car's width on the inside.

This Brand-New Dandelion Yellow McLaren F1 Still Wears Its Plastic Seat Covers (https://petrolicious.com/articles/this-brand-new-149-mile-dandelion-yellow-mclaren-f1-still-wears-its-plastic-seat-covers)

Everything is here, including the pieces you didn’t know came with the car when new: the gold-plated titanium tool set that travels with the car; the additional Facom tool chest that doesn’t (unless you drive with a support car in tow, which if you have the bankroll to call on the price of this F1, it’s not unlikely); the still-sealed collection of luggage; the special edition TAG Heuer watch engraved with the car’s chassis number (060); and a number of other goodies including those as wonderfully nuanced as an unopened strip of windscreen film.

The original Japanese owner also ordered the car with a number of interesting spares, including an LM-style exhaust and a GTR-style steering wheel, and optioned it with desirable pieces like a carbon driver’s seat and color-matched interior trim pieces. As if the car could further elevate its status as the ultimate road-going F1, it also bears on its rear flank the hand-painted signature of the man responsible for its conception and design, Gordon Murray.

You couldn’t conceive of a better F1 to represent the model.

That little Honda sports car concept looked more like a Toyota 2000GT.

I love his little snipe at the 370Z. Seriously that thing is basically just an upgraded 350Z, which was introduced in 2002! But then, what competition does it really have? BRZ/86 is lower tier. Z4 was higher (at least in price, and is dead now). Mustang et al? I guess looking on paper, but they have such a different vibe. So it's hard to fault Nissan, but rather everyone else (from Japan anyway) for not trying to compete.

When he pans over from the original Stratos to the 'new one', I about coughed up my soda. That new one is certainly not a big car, but it looks like a damn Suburban next to the old one.

How many goddamn Range Rover variations are they going to make?

I will never like the Senna. (unless I get to drive one, I guess...)

Interesting tech feature on the Pista's wheels, having a Aluminum inside to protect from heat from the brakes. Something I don't think we've ever seen before, and something that make sense, but maybe is overkill to make people pay the $20k extra just to make it as fast as the bog standard McLaren 720S, despite Harry's love for Ferrari :p

The autonomous incident got me thinking about weird driving scenarios, and reminded me of one here in Miami

There's an intersection right after an overpass downtown, that when coming from that side, you cannot see the light until right before the intersection, because the angle of the high lights and low overpass. If it's red and you're travelling the speed limit, you basically have to slam on the brakes, if you even notice it since there is another light only about 30m further on. So you're driving under the overpass, see the second light, and start to focus on it, then bam, there's a red light right above you. I think I ran it once before I knew it was there.

Carlo had an R53 and from what I know he spent his ownership chasing electrical gremlins. Our R56, other than having some bad coils at about 55k, has been quite uneventful.

I may be looking at this somewhat pedantically. I think the MINI hardtop/hatch are great cars. I was really hoping that Hummer was going to stay in business and keep making smaller and smaller SUV's, then we would come to a point where a Mini Countryman is larger than a Hummer SUV and the world would officially no longer make sense

I really like the Cooper S Clubman's.

I know that odds are high that they're nothing but trouble (by comparison to the endless line-up of Toyota's that I normally own), because looking at the ones for sale, and the list of things that have been replaced on them at comparatively low mileage.

I was a *huge* fan of the original Mini Van / Estate range. But they're worth as much as 2 or 3 "new" (2008-ish) Clubman's.

I had a 1996 one of those, with different bumpers front and rear, otherwise the same. Called a Sprinter.

It fit the description of everything above, including exterior colour, but was the manual version.

Surprisingly excellent car. Utterly slow, insanely cheap to run, nothing ever went wrong with it. Really liked it :)

I'm guessing US models had corners cut on the brakes (rear drum), suspension (solid rear with crap damping), and interior. My buddy's wife had a 2003 Corolla LE, and it rode like crap even compared to my 2002 Sentra SE-R. Well, when the SE-R was stock, anyway.

There's a reason you see so many old people driving 2000s Corollas. With the badges removed, they are the encyclopedic "car." No drama, no trouble, no performance. They start, they stop, they are Toyota reliable. Vanilla ice cream, no sprinkles.

I did new shocks, and uprated springs in mine, just because it had so many miles on it.

It then comprehensively out-handled the very modest power output.

Can't recall if the car had discs or drums on the rear. The interior was in amazing condition for the miles, I think I replaced one dash cubby hole hinged cover, shampoo'd the seats, and it was good as new.

Migrated this from the notable sightings thread...

I saw a car slightly ahead of me one lane over with a sign on top. "Dad's Driving School". I wondered whether that was an appropriate name. After the lights changed, it, not unexpectedly, started up way too slowly and I passed it on the right naturally. In my rear-view mirror I saw it eventually move into my lane behind me. But, thankfully, although that lane has an option to get onto the highway, I later saw it not take that option. Let's hear it for Ray Harroun.

We didn't die, though it was awfully slippery on the track in the morning.

He did end up doing an excursion off track into mud, and turned the car brown.

I'm now a fan of the 4 cylinder Altezza. It isn't as fast as my V8 transplanted one was, but oh man, it was fun to chuck around. Mad bastard for lending that car to me ... ah well.
