Not that difficult, when done in moderation and at reasonable times. If you wouldn't feel comfortable glancing at your radio, a billboard, a cool car/motorcycle going by you, the HVAC, whatever, then don't glance at your phone. The issue, like anything, is the people that think it's more important to find the station they want, what the license plate says on the car in the other lane, what exit that Cracker Barrel is on, or what their sister just sent them, than the dense, dynamically changing traffic around them.

Phone / text use whilst driving here in NZ (other than handsfree calling) gets you big fines here.

They will even (occasionally) monitor traffic cameras and watch for people using phones whilst waiting at traffic lights (still illegal) and pull them up for it. (police officer in traffic camera building, radioing police officers waiting in police cars).

Though it's a relatively recent thing that it is outlawed, so there is much flouting of this law.

This reminds me of a recent urgent thing I needed to discuss with someone. I left him three voice mails over three days, and sent three emails, too - one per day. Then I called his boss, and he phoned me about ten seconds later.

"Hey, my boss texted me. What's up? Oh, and in the future, if you need to reach me, just send a text."

Fuck you. No. Answer your phone when it rings, and check and reply to your damn BUSINESS email, just like everyone else!

I like Sms, it's good for not urgent things.
I'm not a great phone person, hate talking on the phone.
Detest voice mail. My friends know that and generally don't leave messages as it might pile up for weeks.
Esp hate it when a voice mail is just "just calling to say hi". Really bad when I'm on the bike, miss a call and have to de-helmet to check voice mail to hear that. Sms me, I can read it, reply if needed, then get the bike going again all without hassling helmet.

I don't hate talking on the phone, but I like texting for non-urgent things because it doesn't interrupt what a person is doing. They can read it now and reply immediately, or read it now and reply later, or read it later and reply later. And there are so many situations where I can see/reply to a text, but can't answer the phone. If you call, and I can't answer, I have to dial into my voicemail, press some numbers, listen to your voicemail, and then call back.

A lot of people are in the habit of ignoring phone calls, especially from numbers they don't immediately recognize, because there's a good chance they are just spam/promotional.

Agreed. Unless something needs to be dealt with now, text me. Just because you have something super cool to say does not mean I have the time to listen to it. Text me, and I will get to it when I get to it. The only time I want a phone call is when something needs my immediate attention *and* it's too complicated to communicate via the written word in a reasonable amount of time. Texts are also superior to voicemail, because I can read in a moment what it takes two minutes to plod through verbally. I basically never check my voicemail - haven't for 10+ years.

Your argument against texting seem to start based on complaints about people who text-and-drive.

Once a new a cycling acquaintance texted me in the morning about his progress (as he was getting out of bed, eating, etc) when we intended to meet on the road. I think the first few times were on my old cellphone, so it was awkward. But then, when I got a smartphone where I could see the entire conversation at once, wow! It allows each party to do what they need to do to get ready for bicycling, and only periodically check for messages from the other.

Now, there's a big difference between texting on a smart phone with a soft keyboard (or in early versions a hard keyboard, and modern Blackberries have hard keyboard models too), and texting on an old-style cellphone where you had to pick a digit, then press repeatedly to get the right letter.

Strange thing is, after our first 160km cut short to 130km ride, we kept tentatively planning to go for another (probably a 40km early morning classic) but somehow he never quite managed it, although he seemed sincere in trying. Now that I've aged a few crucial years I'm sure I'd be too slow for him.

But texting was a convenient way for him to say, "No, sorry, not this morning either" without interrupting my running around filling water bottles, getting bicycle to the garage, moving shoes to a convenient location, etc. (diddling with the GPS on phones...)

Rider was accelerating up to the point of collision. During my MSF course, they made the comment that the motorcyclist must always be 100% alert at all times and we need to accept fault even when it is not ours. This accident was completely preventable from the cyclist point of view. People in cars do dumb shit, collision was completely preventable if the cyclist had just slowed down.

The cyclist was in the blind spot of the car right until the collision. Cyclist could have easily prevented this. This is why I say he is at fault.

I'd be inclined to agree with this, although...

I don't see where the SUV actually broke the law - he was angled funny, but hadn't made an illegal turn and hadn't crossed any lines. One might argue he was about to, but the law doesn't tend to consider what might have happened. The SUV made a safe turn and was fully established in the lane when the motorcycle entered the roadway, meaning legally the motorcycle must yield to the SUV. Further, since the SUV did not hit the motorcycle, and the motorcycle totally broadsided the SUV the argument would be made he should have slowed or stopped. It wasn't "nearly missed" it was full-on, broadside collision. The SUV driver is/was an asshat, but I can't see where they broke the law. The motorcyclist appears to be in the wrong from a legal perspective.

Sometimes they have problems. A friend of mine back in the '80's had a total electrical failure and had to land in a smooth concrete paved river bed. It was an easy fix and theoretically, they could have fixed it and flown it out but it turns out that's illegal so they had to take it apart and truck it out.

I-595 runs parallel to the Ft. Lauderdale Airport approach bath and runways when coming in from the west. The other day a single engine 4-seater was coming in to land when the tower made him abort and circle for a Jet that had priority. They kept him up there for too long to the point he had to put it down on the interstate because of fuel. Just clipped one car on landing, no injuries. This is a very busy highway at a busy time of day too.

Remember those Spitfires that were rumoured to be buried in the Burmese jungle? In WWII they built them in various factories and loaded them into shipping containers then sent via boat and rail for deployment in Asia.

It isn't always possible or even necessary to put out a car fire. If everyone is safe, you might as well let it burn. Insurance handles the rest.

And a maximum response time for a fire truck in my country is 12 minutes. That video is 1.5 minutes long so it's impossible to tell based on what we see, and fires can spread quicker than you think.

At a guess, that would be a loose oil line somewhere in the engine.

Around here, nobody tries to put out a car fire. It's very difficult, and blowing things at it creates the risk of spreading it. Unless something is immediately at risk - like a tree or a building - they let it burn.

The Chicago Fire Department does it all the time since gang members light rival gang members' cars and cars with evidentiary value on fire often enough.

Flaming fluids do definitely leak out, and the fires do sometimes reignite after everybody leaves.

Of course, burning cars in Chicago are almost always near other things like structures or other cars.

Something has always deeply unsettled me about that gif. The smoke billowing out in the background and the grayscale makes it look like it's from the early 20th century, before modern safety standards were put in place that would protect the public from the monsters depicted there.
