I used to love TED Talks...from around 2006 when there was a documentary about them, I though they were a great way to share things from certain people in various fields to improve the world. Now I just read there's 25,000 so far.

I think they've lowered their standards, which is why I haven't paid as much attention to them. I think they should have kept it to the more important topics, but that's just me. I realize TED didn't even start out as this kind of platform, but it emerged to be one.

I read that the differentiations between USA written English and written UK English came about when the first published English dictionary was written in the USA. Apparently they decided that the UK written English inserted too many unnecessary letters in order to over complicate words and make sentences appear more sophisticated. So they decided to eliminate the unnecessary letters when asking their dictionary. Hence tyre vs tire, colour vs color etc and so on.

dodint
January 25th, 2019, 02:13 PM
My understanding was similar, except that it was done in an effort to differentiate America from England. Done out of a sense of nationalism rather than effeciency.

Dicknose
January 26th, 2019, 04:46 PM
It was complicated - the English guy who named it changed his mind and he went with "num" ending.
And America mostly used the "ium" spelling initially.
Anyway - both are acceptable, but only one is the official.

And its crazy that the pronunciation differs from the first syllable.

But hey - dont get me started on words like "solder" - that gave me much grief in the USA.

When I worked at ChickFilA it was Christian radio only. We kept track and determined that much like Christmas songs there are really only ten songs. They're just redone by every single group in the genre.

It was almost magical when that station did their telethons and got turned off for the week or two it ran.

Acronyms do not have to be pronounced based on the pronunciation of the words that make them up. That is actually made up garbage. NASA, POTUS, ATM, NATO, SCUBA

And if we're talking about rules (which is kinda dumb in English, since every rule has about a million exceptions). g's are pronounced soft if followed by i, e, or y. Gin, Engine, Genie, Gym.

The fact that people think there should only one
be "correct" pronunciation for a word like that is so silly to me. I have seen and heard people passionately defend and attack positions on this for years, and it's such a fascinating look into nerd culture.

I hope to some day find out that no one really cared or even had a preference either way, and it was all just an improv sketch on which they decided to continue riffing.

Yeah, Peter Pan's only adult role model was Captain Hook, it's no wonder he doesn't want to grow up to be like him...

But to forever be stuck in Neverland and be the king of the lost boys also won't do you any good.

Grow up and have babies with Wendy, give up the fantasy porn with Tinker Bell. Make something of your life!!! Don't fuck Bill Maher, don't fuck Captain Hook, fuck Wendy(in a good way) and raise a proper family of your own if you think the previous generations didn't know what the fuck they're doing. Don't continue to hide in Neverland is what Bill was trying to say I think. Do something with your life. If you keep this up, being Peter Pan, there won't even be a future generation to complain about your sorry generation.

Earth is in deeper shit than ever before. Birthrate is declining. Old farts will all die away soon... May the super heros in you start the grow up soon and rise to the occasion. Earth needs you. The most exciting thing I saw was a few middle-aged ladies hooting and hollering when some tattooed guy took of his shirt at halftime. The rest of it seemed pretty ho-hum, in great contrast to the amazing second half of the AFC Championship game this year.

so this idea of fake videos of world leaders being more easily made has me concerned, but I had a minor idea.

Why not for all planned speeches and special reports, etc. there's multiple cameras, angles and audio sources used. So it would be still possible to fake what is being said and heard, but it would be more complicated to do so and we can be more assured of what's actually being said.

Crazed_Insanity

The past 24 hours have been very sad around here. Last night an Amber Alert was issued for a little girl abducted by her father on her 11th birthday. Apparently he was separated from her mother and failed to return her at the agreed upon time. The alert went out at around 11:30pm, texted as an emergency to people’s phones in southern Ontario.

It was established that the father was clearly a disturbed individual, who had threatened to harm himself and his daughter. Turns out he made good on that threat. At around 12:30am another message was sent out, cancelling the Amber Alert, as the child was found. I thought all was fine, but no. He murdered her in his basement apartment and then fled. They found him an hour north of the city.

Fucker killed his own daughter on her birthday. What kind of monster does that? As the father of an 11-year-old girl myself, this hurts so much. I didn’t know either of them, but I still find myself really disturbed by it. It’s so gut wrenching and heart wrenching and cuts to the core. How can a man do that to his little girl???

Couldn’t sleep last night and was sluggish all day today thinking about it. Gave my daughter a couple of extra hugs today. It’s so tragic what happened.

The worst part was people complaining about the Amber Alert waking them up in the middle of the night. Get fucked with an AIDS dick if you think your convenience outweighs the life of a missing child. Petty bastards.

But yeah, I don't think I would've complained aloud about it. I get that perspective but the reality is that people are always out and about even at 11:30pm, there's traffic on the roads and highways 24/7. The police don't know who's awake and who's asleep. In fact they caught the father based on a sighting from someone who saw the alert, so the system did work. Obviously the desired result was that the little girl would be with him and unharmed, but it didn't work out that way.

Oxygen levels in some tropical regions have dropped by a startling 40 percent in the last 50 years, some recent studies reveal. Levels have dropped more subtly elsewhere, with an average loss of 2 percent globally.

Crazed_Insanity

If you can't trust scientific american, who can you trust?!?!?!

I am a believer of climate change, I think the data is clear. However, like I said before, what's less clear is what's the real cause and how can we fix it.

Take this oxygen level issue in the ocean for example, will reducing green house gases really help enough?

We could be sacrificing billions of dollars trying to reduce greenhouse gases with a global effort, but the ocean could still be fucked because of other pollutants we dump into the ocean.

Plants only produce about 30% of our overall oxygen, it's the ocean that generates 70% of oxygen. We can be reducing as much CO2 as we can, but if the ocean is truly screwed and can't create enough O2 by converting CO2, we'll still be left in a hot greenhouse all the while trying hard to reduce CO2 further in a futile effort.

Scientists now need to come up with as many possible solutions as they can. Surely there's isn't just ONE way like Jesus is the only way in order to solve this complex problem. Of all possible solutions to try, we'll try the one's with least public resistance 1st. Waiting for humanity to reach a global consensus is also unrealistic.

This is hogwash; propaganda from the fossil fuel industry that has a financial interest in subverting climate science. My wife is a climate scientist, legit. Greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels is the cause of anthropogenic climate change. Seriously. It is a scientific consensus among her peers. Really and for true.

Cam, I’m not a fossil fuel lobbyist, just saying that if somehow we humans are also causing significant harm/decline of phytoplankton population, major converter of earths CO2 to O2, then we will be screwed no matter how much CO2 we cut.

I find it hard to believe us generating more CO2 is causing their decline. We must be polluting the oceans in other ways.

When someone who really knows their stuff tells you what’s up and you still refuse to acknowldge it, what more can I say?

We are most certainly poisoning the oceans in additional ways; agriculture and resource extraction runoff, garbage/waste...

Anthropogenic climate change is caused by fossil fuel burning. Seriously. Scientsts that specifically study climate say so. Smart people. Smarter and more educated than us. It is their job to study climate. It’s what they do. It’s all they do. They know their shit. It’s their first love, much to their spouse’s chagrin. There is no debate in the scientific community. There is an agreement that an increase in greenhouse gasses released by modern human activity are causing climate change. Really.

I'm not denying you and your wife's claim dude. Considering how many cars and factories and powerplants we have now compared to just a few decades ago, surely we are producing helluva lot more CO2 than ever before.

Again, not denying this reality. I'm not a climate change denier.

I just think there are most likely multiple solutions. And don't pull this crap the church pulls on the rest of the population... that there's only one way to be saved. Do it the Jesus way or the highway. Com'on, why should I believe that? ;)

Earth's climate is a complex system. I'm sure your wife knows what she's doing, but I'm willing to bet scientists don't all have consensus either.

Anyway, I just don't believe we can afford to wait until the whole world reach agreement in order to do something. Each nation can't even make up their minds yet let alone wait for the whole world to come to an agreement on this.

At the very minimum, let's each try to pollute our planet a little less in our own ways NOW!

I think you're missing what Billi is actually saying, Cam.

Burning Fossil fuel= primary CO2 producer and O2 killer

Phytoplankton=primary O2 producer and CO2 killer

Cam, what is your wife’s view of phytoplankton? Are they declining or not? If so, why?

My view is that there are at least 2 ways to fix our problem. However, I'm not a climate scientist nor marine biologist, not even sure what's the best way to go the phytoplankton route without further upsetting the balance. For example, ingredients needed for phytoplanktons are water, light, CO2 and nutrients. All we need to provide are proper nutrients and ensure no pollutants... however, even if we could raise sufficient phytoplankton levels to offset fossil fuel emissions, they will dramatically deplete oxygen in the ocean, which might harm other marine lifeforms.

Cutting down CO2 is certainly the right step and perhaps the inevitable thing to do. I hope you understand that I'm not arguing against that.

Using Josh's analogy, I think he's pretty close, except we need to add a bit of political context. Say that I'm black... and my wife or son was shot dead by a cop and I'm unable to get justice out of that because of fucking racists. Now my car is broken into. Okay, so now I don't feel like reporting that to the stupid police because they're racists, but I should still report it to my insurance company and get my car fixed, right? I shouldn't just allow other parts of my life to fall apart just because of some fucking racists are in the way? Likewise, we don't have to to wait for the climate deniers to come to agreement to do something. Find the least resistance thing to do 1st as 1st aid to our climate... hopefully in time, attitudes will change.

I'm assuming you never saw the climate discussion in the political thread, but FYI, I have solar on my roof and driving an EV. I hope that is sufficient to help you see that I'm not a fossil fuel lobbyist. You don't need to fight me about climate change. I'm fighting climate change in my own ways.

Yeah, they just didn't communicate with us very clearly, so we were surprised. The second round of chemo (we might do a clinical trial with immunotherapy also, we'll see) is supposed to be "easier" than the stuff she was originally on, but is still going to come with side effects, and she tends to be sensitive to those. Surgery is because they didn't get enough healthy tissue when they removed it, so they might need to go back in and scrape more out, finding out more today. Either way, the odds are still in her favor for a good outcome of all this, but she tends to have bad luck so we're doing anything we can to minimize said bad news odds.

I said that because if we're having issues with phytoplankton population... if earth's is losing it's primary capability of converting CO2 back to O2, then we'll be screwed even if we stop burning fossil fuel altogether, right?

It's obvious and no denying that we're creating too much CO2, maybe even unnatural amounts of it. However, I'd like to know how are earth's phytoplankton population changing as a result. Are they also increasing because of increase in CO2 but even working at their maximum capacity, they can't keep up with us? Or are they actually decreasing causing further accumulation of CO2 in atmosphere? Anyway, data on that seems less clear after did some quick googling. If you can consult your wife on that, I'd appreciate it. What are the latest finding?

This article, dated nearly a decade ago... is this still true? That we're also actually losing phytoplankton? So we can expect to suffocate to death because we just don't have enough oxygen generators around?

Man I heard some sad and shocking news over the weekend. A kid in grade 12 at my son’s school killed himself. Hung himself at home and left a note indicating that he didn’t know why he was doing it. My son is in grade 11 and didn’t know the kid or anything, but heard from others that he was a normal and happily social kid. I wonder what drove him to commit suicide. So devastating. My heart goes out to his parents, siblings and friends.

My son and his buddy went to a vigil last night in the neighborhood. He came back visibly shaken. He’s developed a stiff upper lip since hitting puberty about four years ago and doesn’t like to show weakness, but last night he was in tears for his fallen peer. As a parent it’s very scary because it hits so close to home.

This school is fairly new, only 10-12 years old. This is the first student they’ve lost. So sad. :(

I don't want to jump to conclusions about what happened there, but just wanted to say: As someone who had embarrassing incidents in middle school and high school, where something happens at noon and the entire school knows about it by the end of the day, I can't imagine the kinds of pressure kids are under when social media is involved now, and suddenly what you do can go global very quickly.

I’m thinking that’s a possibility. His ambiguous suicide note didn’t help. Fucking kid was a few months away from graduation. If it was something/someone bothering him at school, couldn’t he just take a step back and realize that in a few months all of these people will be gone? High school will be over and he’ll be off to university (presumably) and a whole new world would open up and he’d never see these people again. That’s the kind of talks I have with my son if I sense something is bothering him at school. I try to expand his horizons a bit and tell him that high school is just for four years. Just to kind of keep his head level and see things from a wider perspective.

He’s off skiing today on a school trip. I hope he’s at least trying to enjoy himself. He was pretty shaken up yesterday. Especially after seeing the kid’s mother. I really feel for the family. When you see that sort of thing it’s hard to not visualize yourself in their shoes, with it being your own kid dead. The thought is unbearable. We raise our kids and try to protect them from danger. Worry about their future, their safety, their physical health and mental health. It’s maddening that some things are out of our reach. Just have to hope they have the mental strength to endure and resources to cope whenever life throws a curve ball at them. And life always throws em.

Crazed_Insanity
March 4th, 2019, 12:14 PM
Yes.

HS kids are practically adults. Hopefully we’ve raised them sufficiently to be able to survive the real world. Can’t protect them forever.

There’s always a reason why somebody committed suicide, even if the cause were depression or other mental issues... whatever the reason, no need to dwell on it anymore. Particularly for the surviving family and friends..., remember to stop blaming yourself. Sometimes there’s just nothing we can do to prevent it.

Anyone contemplating suicide, please only do it after you’ve received blessing from family or friends!!!

I dunno, it seems to me like printers and copiers are an imperfect science. Unless it's dot matrix paper, regular sheets of paper could have a propensity to jam depending on circumstances (humidity, temperature, etc.). I'm just guessing on that though.

There was even a certain paper brand that advertised that it was less prone to jamming than others.

Similar to 3D printers, though, the quality of the media you're printing with probably has a lot to do with the quality and the possible issues.

Again, just my thoughts, I could be wrong. :)

My older machine still runs most games really well, but these days, the game makers are so good at making the game run well at "high" or even "medium" instead of "Ultra," so the rare time I need to turn the wick down, it doesn't bother me. The crash in Ethiopia is very similar to the Lion Air crash that was few months ago.

My nephew posted this image (below) on Facebook. Ended up getting kicked out of the house. Sounds ridiculous, I know.

A little background...my nephew is a student from India on a student visa. He’s 22/23. Came to this country in 2016. He lives with my brother-in-law and his family. He lived with us for the first six months, then moved over there. They’ve kept him since and it’s been a rocky relationship for 2 1/2 years.

My bro-in-law flipped out when he saw that post, thinking he was the target of it, which makes zero sense. I think he was just looking for an excuse to kick the kid out. Truth is the kid is fucking up. Going to school and excessive working has taken a toll on him. His grades have been suffering and he’s spending way more money than he’s bringing in. Collection agencies are constantly after him, and he’s on his last legs, academically. Someone got a hold of his academic report and his GPA was something like 0.8. So it’s bad. Really bad.

You’d think he’d be finished his program by now, but no. This semester that just passed by was his final chance to redeem himself, or lose his student visa and be ordered out of the country. I feel bad for him, but he fucked himself. It all boils down to poor time management. Spending too much time hanging out with friends, going to the casino and blowing his cash, in turn forcing him to work more hours instead of putting that time toward studying.

The semester is over and everyone is waiting on his results. My bro-in-law is being a dick, but to a certain extent I can understand his general frustration. No one can deny that he gave him room and board, totally free of rent. He even gave him a job at his pizza place. He fucked that up once by calling a female customer who he liked. He got her number off the order receipt. Classic case of creepy ass stalking. He’s so lucky she didn’t escalate the situation by bringing the police in.

But yeah this kid is on his last legs in this country. If he gets kicked out of school then he’ll either get back on a plane or go into hiding, and become an illegal. I hope it’s not the latter. I want nothing to do with him if he chooses that route.

I believe in helping people, and did offer to take him back a few times, and even now after this recent spat. But it’s a two way street. He needs to get his shit together, or go home.

EDIT - It’s impossible to click the thumbnail on mobile view, so I’ll just post a transcript of what it says:

”If you didn't hear it with your own ears or see it with your own eyes, don’t invent it with your small mind or share it with your big mouth.”

No doubt he also knows how fucked up he is..., and his behaviors reflect that. This kid obviously needs a lot more help than a visa, roof over his head and a pizza job. Obviously he has severe emotional and possibly mental issues. He needs lots of love and care and attention from somebody probably. Couldn’t find it from his home, then he tried to get some love from female customer...

Very fitting topic for an Easter weekend. Jesus was willing to die in order to help, but such help can only be received by those who are willing to receive help. Not even Almighty God can save everyone. We’re only human. Just help as much as humanly possible I guess...

Good luck to you and your nephew.

Thanks man. It's a really tough situation. Tuition fees for foreign students are through the roof, and it hurt him pretty hard as he had to keep paying again and again because he kept failing. So sad, we had such high hopes for him when he came. His parents back home are really hurting too. He's let them down. I know he feels it.

It'll be hard for him going back to a country like India after spending three years in Canada. You just can't go back to a place like that. The standard of living is like night and day. He'd have no opportunity there to become anything. This was his big shot in life to become something. I hope he had a good semester and can stay alive here with an extended visa. Or perhaps meet somebody and get married. I'm told he has a girlfriend...but I'm not sure if she's Canadian or just another fellow international student. Have no clue, he only gives everyone half the picture, which has been a huge issue. He doesn't tell anyone what he's up to. What his situation is, what his troubles are. We have to force it out of him. Then wish we never knew. What a mess. LOL.

Anyone ever worked for UPS as a package handler?

Trying to get a second job and so far it's about the only thing I've seen to fit with my main jobs work schedule.

My brother did, it was hard work according to him. He isn't much into hard labor unless it involves the gym. Good luck.

What's wrong with some people?

Ex blocked me and hasn't contacted me for about three weeks. Today I get a message saying she misses me and hopes I am doing okay.

I reminded her that she's the reason we haven't talked and told her to choose to be my friend or go away. It's been radio silence again since that.

Was she expecting me to beg her to stick around and talk to me?

I think we all have certain issues, but I think one problem we men have is that we tend to want to apply or expect too much reason from an emotional being... and when we can't deal with those raw emotions, then we just label them as crazy and leave it at that... For sure there are psychos, but if we keep on running into psychos, then maybe we need to rethink a bit... am I attracted to psychos or am I attracting psychos or perhaps what I'm doing is turning them into psychos? ;)

Men are emotional beings too. Falling crazy in love is seriously illogical and unreasonable sometimes. If you've been thru it, you know how it is. Our brain is capable of both reason and emotions... just need to strike the right balance and not fall to either extremes too much.

Lastly, as far as I know, my wife has a lot more close friends than me. Unless you're the social outgoing alpha male type, most guys I know have way fewer friends compared to any typical gal.

So I can assure you she doesn't need another 'friend'. She'd like to have a 'Man'. No girl would want to be told to choose me, as a friend or otherwise, or go away. She wants to feel wanted by her man. A man doesn't have to be on his knee to beg her to please stay and a real man can firmly tell her please don't go because I fucking love you you crazy bitch!!! Not in those words exactly but I hope you know what I mean. ;)

I don't get mandatory minimum square footage for houses.

Minimum in the county I live in is 900 square feet for a house. I can however rent an apartment that's as small as 350 square feet in the same area.

What gives? Why can't I build a simple 1 bedroom or something that's the same size as an apartment?

That's a very dumb bylaw. Doesn't surprise me though. Encourages gentrification in a way, it eliminates frugal, lower income people who want to build a small house on a patch of land. Or a trailer, for that matter.

"Tiny Houses" are a growing trend in this area.

Didn't even realize there can be laws for minimum square footage... I'm only aware of city ordinances that limit you. Such as you can only build up to 1/3 of your lot or whatever other limitations.

Anyway, with every law, you can always find loop holes to get around it, right? ;)

Yesterday was a 14 hr day that had a bit of weirdness to it as well. I was delivering to a customer that takes their delivery through the back door. I went to open the door and a ladder starts falling towards me. I put my arm up and stop. Beats the alternative of wearing it as a hat. I go inside and cuss a bit and put the ladder in front of the cooler door. I go back outside to grab my cart and the door flies open and smacks me in my side. Turns out the manager was trying to open the door for me and didn't realize where I was. All I say is "COME ON, DUDE!", set the stuff inside and go back for the rest of the order. The manager apologized for the ladder thing and admitted they need a place to hang it. I get my invoice signed and go on my merry freaking way.
A few hours later at another location for the same customer I wheel my cart through the prep area and there are a few women working and talking and one of them gives me an odd/concerned look. I take the cart back to where the cooler is and she follows me back there and rubs the small of my back. WTF? I pull my cart out from under the stuff and hightail it back to the prep area and ask if one of them could sign my invoice so I could get going. Don't know if it's boundary issues or what, but I keep my hands to myself and expect others to do the same. Guess I'm a bit paranoid that way.

I know I'm guilty of it myself a good bit but I'm just worn down with having to constantly debate people on everything. I do a lot more 'passive' reading now, here and elsewhere. I just don't engage the way I used to in Pit Stop type topics. I try and post more in the Garage and Paddock threads but there isn't much of a following there; I made a post which included pictures of three forum members participating in a racing event and it got no replies at all. *shrug* I'm thinking about going out to Bonneville to attempt a land speed record next fall and didn't even think to bring it up here because, honestly, who cares?

A more substantial answer is I've always felt this forum, for the amount of traffic it gets, has too many sub-forums. It might be easier for some to browse it if there were fewer places to look. Personally I just use the 'New Post' search so it doesn't affect me unless I'm looking for something specific.

I'm basically here to see what George digs up on Craigslist. ;)

I think we've just about run out of people. So many who used to post here multiple times throughout the day have left over the years. I suppose that's typical. I've stopped going to some forums that I used to enjoy and found a couple new ones because my interests have changed. Life moves on.

There are some parts of this forum I never enter - not on purpose, but just from habit, I guess. I read The Open Road, The Garage, and The Pit Stop and not much else, usually. Maybe I should look around more often.

I've been slacking in my forum craigslist duties because I've been seriously shopping for my next car lately - my first 21st century car - rather than checking out old classics and other oddballs that I can neither afford to buy nor have the room to store but that are fun to look at and talk about.

So now my desire to argue here is greatly reduced too, even if it's usually more reasoned debate. Agreed about debating on FB. I tried debating a racist guy once who didn’t like NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, and he immediately saw my public family pictures and didn’t hesitate to go straight to wife/kids/cocks etc. I swore off debating political shit with people since. If I feel inclined to do it again I can always use my fake account, but it’s not exactly a priority right now, and likely never will be. I do comment on sports stuff once in a while.

As far as this forum goes, I agree with others that there’s not really much to talk about these days. I have near zero interest in US politics, especially with that orange menace in charge, and try to avoid reading the politics thread. I need to start avoiding the news as well. I do enjoy talking about movies and TV. Did a lot of NBA talk recently. It was a great distraction from the BS of the world, but I’m pretty much burned out of that right now.

September 9th, 2019, 09:15 AM
Yeah, that's pretty good for a non-chain restaurant. There are quite a few Indian restaurants where I live, but we are losing fast food restaurants. Seems like all the Burger Kings for miles around have closed (except the one inside a Wal-Mart) and a couple Taco Bells have been sitting empty for a while now (a year or two, maybe). There was also a Steak 'n Shake that closed recently in a shopping center where I find myself often on weekends. The drive-through always had a long line, but I guess there's more to being profitable than always having people in cars sitting there wondering why it's taking so long (that place was notoriously slow). I'm not a frequent fast food consumer, but one can't help but notice this.

What made me think of this is this is I drove by one of the former Burger Kings this weekend and noticed it is now an Indian restaurant.

I like Indian food. I used to get a lot of it at potluck lunches at my last job, but I don't go to Indian restaurants often enough to remember what things are called. But if it's fragrant and spicy-hot, I like it.

20 years? That's a great run! Yeah man. There’s another Caribbean place I’d been visiting since high school that closed down a few years ago, which broke my heart. But luckily, unbeknownst to me, they had a second location that was still up and running. But that location is too far east to realistically visit on a regular basis. One hour drive. So that’s become a once in a year place, rather than once a month.
