Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

I used to work on the second floor of a multi-floor office building. In the lobby on the first floor, there were stairs going up to the second floor, where the elevator lobby was. The second floor elevator lobby opened out to the floor below, kind of like a loft or a mezzanine. Someone walking up the stairs could watch people enter the elevator on the first floor and then see them step out on the second floor, if they climbed the stairs slowly enough.

Yes, I know people have hidden medical conditions, but I couldn't believe how many people would always take the elevator up one floor instead of the stairs, which were both faster and closer to the door. They would walk past the stairs to get to the elevator!

Then, at lunch time or at the end of the day, I would see these same people, standing there while waiting for the elevator to arrive to take them back down one level. I'd be down the stairs and out the door while they still stood there, sometimes.

Oh well, I certainly shouldn't judge others, but it was interesting to me.

Today I've been up and down a few times.

1. Arrived at work. Walked up.

2. Windshield replacement dude arrived. AMAZING! Walked down, showed him car, unlocked doors.

3. Walked back up.

3. Walked back down and paid the man, and gave him my email address (grrr!), since he had no way to print a receipt. WTF?

4. Walked back up, read emailed receipt that said to leave windows slightly open for 24 hours.

5. Walked back down, opened windows.

6. Walked back up.

And, I got a good night's sleep last night - for the first time in several consecutive days - and had two cups of coffee, too. I'll have one cup, some days, but rarely two in one morning.

It's almost two o'clock in the afternoon and I feel like I'm bouncing off the walls with energy. Later today I plan to purchase my first pair of wiper blades in three or four years, to go along with my shiny new windshield.

The building was built before there was a requirement, and it's owned by a private company. There is a service elevator in the back that people have used from time to time.
Commercial facilities, such as office buildings, factories, warehouses, or other facilities that do not provide goods or services directly to the public are only subject to the ADA's requirements for new construction and alterations.

I've had this job for over three years, and I know the windshield was cracked when I started here. If this forum didn't change owners and URLs so often, I'd go back to the Car Sightings thread and figure out when it cracked. I remember snapping a pic of five motorcycle cops riding in formation in the passing lane on a highway and posting that here (or somewhere) and having people comment on my then-freshly-cracked windshield. This was sometime after I got my first camera-phone in 2008, when I started snapping pics of anything and everything simply because I could, and it had to have been before February of 2012, when I stared my current job. I remember thinking, "well, now that I have a better job, I'll either get a new windshield or get a newer car."

What can I say - I don't like to spend money unnecessarily. :D

How did these blades last so long? I have asked myself that before. Sure, they don't perform like new, but they really do work well enough to drive safely when it rains or snows. My car is always garaged at home and always parked under cover in a parking garage at work, so the sun hasn't deteriorated the rubber as much as on cars that live outdoors, and we don't get lots of rain here, either. It rains some, sure, and this has been the rainiest (is that a word?) year since I've lived here, but I'm not out driving in the rain very often. I have a short commute to work, and I live in a dense suburban retailopolis, so weekend errands usually don't involve hours of travel. It's the same with snow, and with snow, the wipers are mostly pushing and plowing instead of wiping, so I haven't seen the need to change the blades yet. I have specifically refused to change blades until I changed the windshield - of that, I'm sure.

Plus, I've been meaning to sell the car for at least as long as the windshield has been cracked, but a recent visit to the mechanic convinced me to put my money where my mouth is with regard to old cars and see how long I can keep this thing running. Hence the windshield, and in a couple of hours when I get off work I'm going to muss my hair a bit, push my glasses down low so they look like reading glasses, stoop over slightly and limp, and ask "Sonny" behind the parts counter in a shaky voice where the wiper refills are, just to give him something to post about in the "Old Folks Suck" thread of his preferred internet forum.

300K miles, here I come, if the rust doesn't win first. This car came from Wisconsin per the Carfax I got when I bought it 7+ years ago, so it's not as dry as most "native" cars around here. It has rust showing under one of the rear doors, and rust on a lip of the rear fender on the other side, and the other day I had the front passenger side door open and saw rust on the door hinges. Yikes!
